Kiley’s Senior Portraits

Before Kiley moved to Hawaii with her family, we did her high school senior pictures here in Utah. And now that school is ending, it’s a great time to share these gorgeous images of this gorgeous girl.

Of every thing I shoot, high school seniors are one of my favorites. I often feel like a big kid and I love working with young people, chatting about their lives, and really creating lots of fun and creative images that tell a story about who they are. And Kiley’s photo shoot was even extra fun. She’s a joy to be around and being a dancer, we wanted to capture that side of her and get a lot of variety, images that really capture who she is right now.

Kiley started off her year going to Davis High here in Davis County, Utah. And before her family moved to Hawaii, we did her senior portraits here at my studio, and I am really excited about how everything turned out. This first image was one of my favorites, and we used it on her graduation announcement cards.

I love doing fashion lighting on seniors, and from this series of images I also designed a trio. It looked great once it was finished and framed.
BryCox_Kiley_Senior_06And being a dancer, we created some action shots of her dancing in the studio, and I used those to create this collage. She really looks beautiful in every single one of these images, and the entire design really flows and looked great finished.
BryCox_Kiley_Senior_07And of course for high school seniors, I like to do big sessions that include indoor and outdoor setups, plus multiple changes of clothes and backgrounds. One of our favorite outdoor images was this one of her dancing in the road.

BryCox_Kiley_Senior_08
She had a lot of beautiful outfits, and it was hard to pick favorites, but this one really stood out.

And I love doing 9-up collages for seniors. It’s a great way to show a lot of variety, and here are some of our favorites that made her collage.BryCox_Kiley_Senior_01 And here are some of those closer up.

It was a real pleasure to spend time with Kiley and do these portraits for her. I hope they all made it to Hawaii safely, and that her and her family enjoy these for many years to come.

And if you’re a high school senior and would still like to get some portraits done, I know school is ending for most seniors in Utah right now. And maybe you want some great images still, or perhaps you did a shoot elsewhere and regret them and would like something much better. Whatever the reason, give me a call and let’s get you something great that you and your family will love for a lifetime. Spring has sprung here at the studio and the outdoor gardens look great, plus I’ve been re-vamping the studio gear for even more fashion lighting and options.

Give me a call at 801-728-3317, and until next time, America.

Alexis’s High School Senior Portraits

It’s the time of year for high school senior portraits, and I love photographing seniors. And that should in these images from Alexis’s shoot. She is a dancer at Davis High, and I love incorporating a senior’s personality into her images. So for Alexis, we did this collage of her in her in her Dance Company clothes to show her love of dance.

And my high-contrast black & whites which I do for fashion shoots are always a hit with seniors, and they also work great in trio designs. Alexis has the most genuine smile in the image above, and the trio set below shows a variety of expressions and tells a mini story. BryCox_Senior_Alexis_02

One of my top-selling products for seniors has been the 9-up square collage. They are great for showing a variety of poses, outfits, and backgrounds, and they look great framed on the wall.

Right here in my Utah photo studio, we can create a variety of images for a very fun shoot. And my signature art piece portraits are fun to shoot and a bit time-ingestive to create, but they are captivating, especially with thoughtful expressions.

But a genuine smile with great lighting is also really hard to beat.

Kira’s High School Senior Portraits

Graduation is right around the corner, and this week I had the pleasure of photographing Kira for her high school senior portraits. She was a blast to shoot, fun to talk to, had some really cool music on her iPhone, and did a wonderful job throughout.

In fact, we got so many awesome images, we had the hardest time narrowing it down. Even though I’m a Utah based photographer, I do work all over the country and shot models everywhere. But Kira was easier to shoot than many models I’ve worked with, so I used that and created a lot of commercial and fashion style images.

For instance, Kira loves to ski so I created this multi-image composite of her in the studio. I shot it like a magazine ad, then mixed in snow, and the Banff mountains that I shot when I was up in Calgary. I love the lighting and the expression in this. This was one of my favorites from the shoot.

Here is another favorite of mine. Her turning her head over her shoulder felt like it should be a painting, so I used this studio portrait to create this painting. I love the colors and the mood of this.

One fun way to get a lot of senior portraits without having to buy a ton of wall portraits is to get a collage like this. I really like the nine-up design, and this is a popular seller. They can show a lot of moods, sides, and outfits in a cool design.

BCox-Kira-sr_12

Well thank you so much for the fun and cool shoot, Kira. And if you’re a senior, now is the time to get in before graduation. Give me a call at 801-728-3317. Let’s capture this moment in time in a fun and cool way. I really do know just how to light and photograph you with a magazine/fashion sense that will capture your personality and make you look amazing.

And until next time America.

Blake’s Senior Portrait Sneak Preview

Because school is starting this week, I’m showing a sneak peek of Blake’s senior portraits. We did a Senior Mix Session with an additional location, and here’s what we got! Blake is a drummer, so to showcase that talent, we set up his drums along with a portable studio setup of lights and equipment out in one of my favorite desert locations. The jumping ones were my favorites and I really liked the storm clouds we had that day. It made for some great drama in the sky.

Cox_BJohnson-sr-292-edge

We also did a full session in the studio with a number of different setups. Here is one of my favorites from his black and white series using a very unique lighting setup. The resulting look is hip, edgy, and modern.Cox_BJohnson-sr-114b-edge

This next image at the pool wasn’t shot at a pool at all, but actually created completely in the studio! Senior portraits should show who you are and what you like to do. Doing this image at the studio gives me the creativity to create the best image possible with the most custom lighting.

Cox_BJohnson-sr-347_Pool-edge

And of course, senior portraits are always fun with a cap and gown.

Cox_BJohnson-sr-229-edge

In 20 years looking back to today, what are you going to want to remember about your senior year? Let’s create a portrait for you that shows in a unique and professional way who you are right now.

If you are a high school senior and especially if you are a friend of Blake’s, I can create some amazing portraits of YOU, and right now is the BEST time to get in for some senior portraits! I have some awesome promotions going on, plus the weather is great for outdoor sessions.

Here’s what to do:

(1) Call me at the studio to set up a time, ask any questions you have, and let’s talk about some fun ideas for your shoot, 801-728-3317.

(2) Start thinking of fun outfits you may want to bring, maybe go shopping for a new outfit or two, and most importantly, don’t forget some props that say something about you, like wake boards, a basketball, musical instrument, skis, motorcycle helmet, dance shoes, …anything!

(3) Bring your mom or a friend to the shoot so they can be a part of the whole experience.

(4) And don’t forget your iPod so that you have your favorite music playing during the shoot.

I will post more images from Blake’s shoot soon! Keep tuned in!!

Whitney’s Senior Portrait Sneak Preview

This week Whitney is starting school as a high school senior and I had the pleasure of photographing her and creating some beautiful senior pictures. Here’s a sneak peek of her session.

She has such a great and captivating smile, she was a blast to work with. We did a full Senior Mix Session, meaning we shot multiple outfits, created both in color and black and white, used multiple backgrounds including inside the studio and outside in the studio gardens, and used a mix of lighting styles from fashion to beauty to classic.

Cox_WBigler-sr-8x20-The-Cape-ooo

This wall trio above is one of my favorites. Her eyes pop and her personality really comes through. I love telling a story in three images.

And her close ups, like the one below are superb. I really like her smile in this, and how her outfit works so well and is set off by the funky brown background.

Cox_WBigler-sr-264

Senior photo shoots should always include images that say who you are and what you like to do. Whitney plays the piano, and here at the studio, I have a baby grand just for photographs. Here are some of those images. Whitney is also a dancer, and those images are coming along with many others.

Cox_WBigler-sr-154-bwCox_WBigler-sr-146b

I have many more images to show from this shoot, but for now I’ll leave you with this beautiful outdoor portrait in the wind, taken in the studio gardens.

Tyler’s Senior Portraits

I’ve been working on Tyler’s senior portraits this week, and they are amazing! When I photograph seniors, I can push things further, use more of my edgy fashion lighting, and be extra crazy and creative. All of these images were created at my studio — none on location!

This first piece was shot inside at my studio, and I created the pool completely from scratch, digitally. I love how this turned out, the aggressive lighting pattern, the strong stance, the lines in the water framing and adding depth… all around, this is one of my favorite senior pieces I’ve created in a while.

Cox_TOBrien-Sr-252-Edge

Tyler is also a great basketball player, so I created this as a double-page spread for his album.Cox_TOBrien-Sr_Basketballcomposite

Here is another image in his basketball uniform, from behind, lit to be more dramatic.

I also created some wall collages like this trio…Cox_TOBrien-Sr_8x20

and this nine-up wall collage. These wall collages are a great way to get a number of different images in one cool display that can hang almost anywhere.Cox_TOBrien-Sr_21x21NinePrintComposite-dark

Tyler has also received his LDS mission call, so we did some missionary portraits as well. Here’s just a couple of those.Cox_TOBrien-Sr-121-5x7Cox_TOBrien-Sr-102

This is just a small sample of the cool images we created or that are going in his custom senior album. I really think Tyler is going to love these finished images. They show a nice variety of moods and looks, and years from now when he reflects back on this time in life, he’ll have some great mementos and heirlooms from that time.

And if you need some great senior portraits, it’s a great time for the class of 2013 to get in last minute, as well as the class of 2014 to get an early start. Give me a call at 801-728-3317 and until next time, America.

Shooting Model & Seniors in Washington (Evergreen Workshop part II)

Usually I only get to post the images I create. At this event, one of the photographers in attendance, Joanne Murray took a number of images of me working and was kind enough to provided them to me. I really appreciate that and am posting them here so that you can see another view of this workshop.

Having so many out-of-town jobs in a row, I was sporting a trip beard.

If you compare these images of me working to the previous post of finished portraits, you can see how I created the images. this one below was one that I featured on the last post. I wanted a unique angle and balanced on the tip of the bench, then held my light out at the right angle with one hand and photographed her with the other hand.

Here we are after dinner, setting up for the night shoot.

Here’s me using a reflector to help control the natural light.

You should see the image I created here too in the previous post. what you can barely see here is that the flash I’m using is off to the side. I don’t like using just pure natural light, as it is never coming in at the correct direction that I need it. I always need to correct it somewhat to get a spectacular image.

And finally, Joanne was kind enough to be my ride and escort from Seattle to Port Townsend. We had a long and lovely drive that included a ferry ride. Here is one of her images of me on the ferry.

If you’re looking to attend one of my photographic workshops, please check out my workshop site, at BryCoxWORKSHOPS.com. There are new events being announced all the time. I hope to see you at one soon.

Until next time, America! 🙂

Shooting Model & Seniors in Washington (Evergreen Workshop part I)

I taught a weeklong photographic workshop called ‘Evergreen’ outside of Seattle in a small town called Port Townsend. Here are some of the images from that event.

Usually as I travel and move, I create images — it’s like a part of my brain that doesn’t turn off. I see abstract shapes in everything around me.

For a while now, I’ve created some of these images on my iPhone because it makes it extra fun. You see, the iPhone in its simplicity, doesn’t have any exposure controls, so so I have to think around its limitations. That particular method of thought makes me think differently and I tend to create different images than I normally would.

While teaching, I demonstrate various types of equipment and techniques. All of these image were created in front of the group, from the initial creation, to the workflow and the final retouching.

We also used a minimal amount of equipment, staying as mobile as possible, and used backgrounds and locations right there within walking distance. When I’m shooting at a workshop, I specifically like to focus on teaching three things:

1) Make the most of what you’ve got. For instance, instead of wondering if there’s a better place nearby, instead ask yourself how you can make a particular area work as a cool background?

2) We don’t want just good images, we want to create fantastic images that have punch and emotion.

3) We want all the work to be done in camera so that we don’t have to fix anything later. The images should be perfectly exposed, have the perfect color balance, have a strong emotion and believable expression, and be lit with control from the right angles. That way anything we do to the image later will be for fun instead of to fix it.

Most of these images have very little work done to them, and what work was done was done quickly in front of the class using special techniques and some of my specific products. In fact, using these techniques it seems that it actually takes more time to pick favorites than it does to finish them up.

So these girls told us that a lot of local photographers use the area for senior shoots, so we really wanted to create unique images, find cool nooks, and use the area in new ways.

I think you can tell that the shoot was a lot of fun for everyone.

Hopefully you can see that we really created a lot of variety, and used all sorts of areas to our advantage. We wanted to create a lot of different looks as quickly as possible, and make something wonderful from each spot.

That night after dinner, we invited the girls to come meet us in town for some night shooting. Instead of the normal dark or flat images that are typical at night, instead I showed how to create depth and how to get perfect exposures while working with various off-camera flashes.

The challenge here was to show that no situation is difficult when we really understand light. Below, is a mulit-light setup using a streetlight for interest. I angled her so that the wind was working with her hair, and I really like how these turned out.

And finally we took our model Lane, out on the pier, looking out towards the water. The first image is a photograph, and the second is a painting that I created from another photograph in the series.

If you’re looking to attend one ofmy photographic workshops, please check out my workshop site, at BryCoxWORKSHOPS.com. There are new ones being announced all the time. I hope to see you at one soon.

Until next time, America! 🙂

Dallin’s High School Senior Portraits

Senior shoots are so fun.  I get to do all the fun fashion stuff that I love to do, and seniors love it!  Dallin came in for senior portraits and here’s some of my favorites from the shoot.  This first one is on my magazine background, and uses one of my custom pealed edges.  It has a cool retro feel.

Dallin did the Senior Mix Session, which includes both Color and B&W, both indoor and outdoor portraits using a number of sets, and multiple clothing changes.  We mixed looks and created images that show his interests and hobbies.

I love this one below of Dallin playing the guitar.  I toned it with as a multi-tone b&w, and then added some light-leaks on the corners.  Originally when I was shooting the image, I wanted it to look like a band poster.  Now I can totally imagine text on it, advertising his next show.

We also did some cool black and whites in the studio, using some high-contrast fashion style lighting.  This first in a casual shirt, and the second in his letterman’s jacket.

Then some dressy images in the studio and out.  One of my favorites was this outdoor image, taken in my studio gardens.

And then finishing up with some cool images that use his various school jackets.  This first was with his officer’s jacket and his guitar.  I used a set that consisted all of browns, to match his clothing.

And this second with his leather letterman’s jacket and riding a motorcycle.

If YOU are a high school senior and would like a Senior Mix Session like Dallin that shows off you and your personality, give me a call to schedule your appointment.  801-728-3317.
