Early Sneak Peek of Rebecca’s Wedding at the Salt Lake Temple & JSMB

Rebecca’s wedding was beautiful! These two are great together and the weather worked out wonderfully.

While I’m working on and designing her album, I wanted to share some of my early favorites as a sneak peek for you all to see. Here framed in the nook, we have her veil blowing in the wind. She had a beautiful, long veil, and it caught the wind many times throughout the day, adding a lot of fun to the photographs.

I love this portrait of the two of them – a nice, mid-length portrait of them leaning together, newly married.

We had a beautiful, sunny day. So with the right lighting, I was able to make them look beautiful while at the same time capturing this gorgeous and deep blue sky with clouds glowing from the sun. I love how the light of the sun comes through the clouds, down on them, creating a directional lens flare, all framed by the temple.

Here Rebecca is holding her veil for this wonderful kiss.

And some dancing in the wind to the delight of a full paparazzi crowd of Chinese tourists behind me. They cheered and clapped, and snapped a ton of photos during this dancing sequence.

I love these long tall lines mixed with the diagonals of her veil and dress.

Then just before the reception, these dark clouds started rolling in. I got low to look up to show these deep storm clouds. Then during the reception while we were all inside the JSMB, we got a rain storm for a bit.

And to end the night, we came back outside to capture this amazing sunset to end the day. I love warm colors surrounding them, all while being framed by the temple.

Ryan Shupe Live Concert at Sandy Amphitheater, June 2018

Ryan Shupe just had his big outdoor summer concert here in Utah at the Sandy Amphitheater, and I was there again to photograph the event for him. His band, ‘Ryan Shupe & the RubberBand‘ puts on a great live show. The mix of great music, the cool night breeze, friends, laughter, and smell of popcorn and hotdogs from the concessions all come together for a wonderful night.

These images I shoot get used for his promotional materials, website, and even for album designs. The images I shot last year for him have been used entirely for his brand new album design, Live Volume II.

I hope you can feel the energy from the live show, just by viewing these images.

For one song, Ryan had me shoot some iPhone video for his Facebook live which included a wedding proposal at the end of the song. But during the song he has tons of children from the crowd come up and sing on stage with him.

Here’s the video. It starts with a few seconds of my face resetting the app, because the Facebook app crashed as soon as the song started.

And as the night gets later, the stage lights grow and you can see the energy on stage grow as they start rockin’ even more.

Sneak Peak of Brittney’s Wedding at the Salt Lake Temple & JSMB

Brittney’s wedding at the Salt Lake Temple here in Utah was absolutely gorgeous. She had her reception at the JSMB (Joseph Smith Memorial Building), and those night images are also stunning. You have to see these early sneak peek of some of my favorites that are in her final wedding album design.

As you can see, these two are great together. The day was wonderful and emotional, and with some mobile custom lighting, the images have pop and impact. The colors and tones are deep and vivid, and the images are romantic and look wonderful.

This next image with Brittney’s hair blowing beautifully was our pick for the album cover image.

And I especially love this one of them dancing.

On the evening of the reception, we did some night portraits outside, and here are some of my favorites.

Jannette’s Snowy Mountain Wedding Engagement Portraits

Living near the Utah mountains, this couple wanted a snowy mountain look for their engagements. We were able to find some snow left to shoot these gorgeous wedding engagements at Log Haven up Millcreek Canyon, which is where their wedding will be later this summer too.

Here’s a video showing how beautifully their order of wall portraits and album turned out, best viewed in full screen.

And here are some of their images. We started on the deck of Log Haven because their clothes and colors worked so well with the deep, rich colors of the building.

 

We then ventured out into the snow to photograph against the waterfall and other snowy backgrounds. I love this tall image of the waterfall, and these two hugging and talking to each other.

Along the river we created this portrait, which became one of their framed wall pieces.  

Then a change of clothes and a change of scenery, looking out across this lake with a deep blue sky in the background. This long panorama of these two leaning together is killer in the album, taking up two page spreads for dramatic emphasis.

And this beautiful close-up was the other framed wall portrait, as you can see in the video above. 

Finally, some ending shots surrounded by the deep dark colors of the forest’s trees. These two look great together and I’m excited to be a part of their wedding coming up later this summer.

Brittney’s Outdoor Winter Bridal Portraits in Utah Desert

This weekend I’m photographing Brittney’s wedding here in Utah. So it’s a great time to share some of her bridal portraits that we did right here near my studio, outside in the Utah desert. We had a cold winter day which gave us some wonderful clouds to work with. I always love a dramatic sky because with the right lighting, I can make the sky pop and accentuate the bride.

She has a gorgeous dress that fits her perfectly. And the textures of her dress mixed with the rocky desert made for a wonderful combination.

Yellow is one of her favorite colors, so these roses were very apropos and added a nice color pop to these winter images.

As we were ending the shoot, more clouds rolled in and the sky loomed with a wonderful deep blue. This was a great way to end with a mix of color and b&w images.

And finally, here’s a trio showing off the details of her dress, lace, and ring.

Impromptu Photo Shoot of Gabrielle

Gabrielle is a writer for the company Fstoppers, and I met her while I was speaking at the big national photography convention ImagingUSA. This year the convention was just held in Nashville, and it’s unusual for it to snow there. But right after I finished speaking, we were hit with a gorgeous snow storm. And having met Gabi with her fun style and her purple hair, she seemed perfect for an impromptu photo shoot out in the cold snowy night.

Because I was there to speak and not take portraits, I didn’t have my typical professional load out of gear. But as I teach photographers at my workshops, great photography is about knowledge, not gear. We should be able to create great images with any gear, if we know what we’re doing. So using my small travel camera (that I refer to as my “toy camera”) along with a basic light and umbrella that I had with me, I was still able to control my lighting angles and create some great images. See what you think.

Though I had in mind color images in the snow, some of the images really popped as black and white. I really love how these look.

Also, the air was too frigid to work for too long outside. My fingers quickly stopped working and went numb as I tried to control the dials on my camera. So we went in and finished up our shoot using the indoor garden atrium of the Gaylord Opryland Hotel. The plants and leaves were the perfect backdrop for Gabi. 

And while in the atrium, we used one more backdrop – the walls of the indoor shops. It gave us the look of being off on location while actually being inside and warm. 

There’s a lot of personality in these images and I really love how they turned out. It would have been fun if Gabi and I had done a full shoot with various changes of outfits and location. Perhaps at another event sometime.

Gorgeous Family Portraits

For Christmas I delivered this beautiful family portrait. They have been a joy to work with and I have loved working on this order. Each time I see all these children and their beautiful faces, I feel my heart swell. The final canvas looked vivid and stunning, especially because they ordered it as a larger 50-inch canvas with an outside frame that made the colors pop. And it looked wonderful in their home.

This family lives not too far from my Utah studio, and we created this at their home in their yard. It was the perfect location and provided a very meaningful background for their heirloom portrait.

Just before packing my SUV to deliver the order, I recorded this video because I had to show it off. See what you think…

And when I photograph big families, we also take time to photograph the smaller, individual families. Here are some of those images. And look at how adorable each little child is in each family grouping. And notice too how the lighting creates a clean and vivid image of everyone. The images are sharp, detailed, and they looked fabulous printed up larger.

I know these will be beloved heirlooms to each of these families for many years to come, especially as these children grow and change. I’m grateful that this family called me to create these, and I’d love to create something special for you too. Now is a great time to do some wonderful family portraits. Bry Cox Interviewed and Featured in Professional Photographer Magazine

I’m honored to announce that I’m featured in this month’s Professional Photographer Magazine. The author wrote a very positive 4 page article that I hope is helpful to photographers all over America.

The magazine wanted to dig into some of the content that I’ll be sharing in January at the big photography national convention called ImagingUSA, which will be hosted in Nashville. Over 10,000 photographers will come from all over the country, with people even traveling in from various countries too. It’s a big event with a huge tradeshows and wonderful line up of speakers.

I’ve given programs at this convention many times over the years. Sometimes I’ve been asked to speak on lighting, other times on retouching and digital workflow where my programs are sponsored by Adobe.

This time I’ve been asked to speak on the business of portrait photography, and this 4-page magazine interview and article is a precursor to that program. It hopefully will give photographers great information to help them in their businesses, whether they are able to come to my program or not. However for those that do attend, this article will give them a head start and help them get even more out of my program and all the info I’ll be sharing.

Street Shoot in Carlisle Pennsylvania, Part 2

While teaching a photographic workshop in Carlisle, Pennsylvania we did a shoot on the beautiful street in front of our hotel. I had previously posted the high school senior that I’d photographed, but I shot a cute little girl who was the daughter of the photographer who organized the event. I wanted to share some of those images as well with again, no retouching. We have great expressions, great skin, eyes that pop, and our color is nailed throughout the shoot. I taught systems for doing all of this on a shoot and these images show how great it works throughout a portrait session.

This little gal had such a variety of expressions, that I thought a composite design was best to show them all off. I can imagine her older in a few years, looking back on this shoot, loving this design, and enjoying her young personality.

And this trio shows off another cute outfit of hers. I really liked her boots in this and wanted to show them off.

Street Fashion Shoot in Carlisle Pennsylvania, Part 1

I just got back from teaching a multi-day photography seminar to the Professional Photographers of Pennsylvania. For one of those days, we did a live shoot on the beautiful street of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, just outside the convention hotel. They had this very pretty high school senior model for me to photograph so that I could demonstrate various lighting techniques while shooting fashion images.

The big take-away I hoped photographers would get out of my program was that no matter the location or lighting style, images should be so good in the camera that they don’t need retouching. Eyes should pop, skin should glow, and people should look better and thinner because of your lighting techniques – not retouching.

And great images means a quicker work-flow, cleaner retouching techniques, and far more powerful photographs because they’re believable. As a followup to that shoot, I wanted to post some of my favorites – unretouched of course. I spent my computer time picking favorites, doing some quick color toning, and adding edges. Other than that, no retouching, no eye whitening, no skin softening, nothing. I hope people can see how great these images look. In fact they’re better than most people’s images after retouching.

During the workshop I showed how to create and design collages for clients. During that demo I shared my quick retouching techniques. So in this collage, two photographs are retouched. The rest are not. I doubt most people could tell which ones are which. If anything I hope people notice the variety of personality and expressions from such a short shoot.

And here is a fun trio design using photographs shot just inside the stoop of an old building.

This next image is actually a painting that I created in front of the crowd of photographers. So this was first retouched, then used as a reference to create this painting. I love paintings because they’re so unique and different. And they look stunning on the wall.

This blue tone to the background is not a computer effect. It was done in camera with just lighting. This street was fantastic to shoot on. Every building and doorway was quaint and engaging. We had a lot of wonderful meals on our downtime in this area, all within walking distance.

And to finish up the shoot back at the hotel, a few images in the hotel lobby using a couple strategically placed lights.

I also did a second shoot with an adorable little girl. I hope to post some of those later. And for kicks, here is an iPhone pic of me in action shot by one of the photographers. Aside from my entertaining “stance” (which is the correct way to bring your camera-line lower), I like this photo because it shows my camera meter. I believe strongly in constantly measuring the light from all directions. And it also shows the how the street scene and the model look normally with “natural light” (which is how the iPhone sees things) versus in my photographs which have specific lighting techniques added.

Bry Cox Christmas Portrait & Christmas Cards

Now that my new Christmas cards are printed and ready to go in people’s orders, I can share the new photo and design. It was all created digitally starting first with a self portrait shot here in my studio (fired by remote using my hidden hand). The original background I created was all shades of white snowflakes, but I decided I needed a bit more color and punch, and changed it to this current blue background.

And because the background was made from scratch and took some time to make, I also used it for a recent commercial shoot for Ryan Shupe and the RubberBand shown in the previous post. Anyway, here is the final portrait and design.

For the printed cards, the text, ‘Merry Christmas’ is stamped into the card in reflective gold foil. I really love how they turned out, and they’re on a very nice watercolor paper too so they have a great feel. I’m excited for clients and friends to start getting these cards.

Kendra Lowe’s Commercial Portraits & Website

Kendra Lowe has been busy, and we’ve been creating new photos to keep up with all of her projects. She released a song and music video to raise money to fight sex trafficking, she just returned home from a tour of performances in France, Jordan, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia (in just the first part of 2016), and she’s been busy recording and arranging pieces for herself and other prominent musicians.

All of this means that she needs great photographs to send to various groups for printing and promo use as well as updating her website. So we’ve spent some time shooting images images of her performing and on stage plus commercial portraits in the studio.

Here are some of the images I’ve created of her recently. These first images are of her as music director of and while performing with David Archuleta.

And between shows we created this series of images of her playing keyboards and piano. Stage lighting is always difficult. The lights are never aiming where they should for a great portrait. So I adapted the stage lighting with reflectors and other various means to create the right atmosphere while giving me some great portrait lighting. I really like how these look.

Not too long ago I created her a brand new website because she was being featured all over. She had just finished in one month doing Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, a European Christmas Tour, and events with Mitt Romney, David Archuleta, Lexi Walker, and Lindsey Stirling. All of her free time was gobbled up creating arrangements and orchestrations for a number of groups like the LDS Church. Some of these gigs came as her role as the musical director, arranger, and pianist for Lexi Walker, a 12 year old singing prodigy who I photographed and posted about earlier.

That website is KendraLowe.com and we are in the process of adding even more to it now.

Some people are surprised to hear that I create websites, but I’ve been doing my own websites as well as sites for specific clients since the 1990’s. There are a lot of things I do as a photographer and designer to help my clients with their photographic needs. Most people need photographs for a specific commercial need, and many times I can keep the look and vision of the images throughout the entire entire process, which helps them save time and money. It looks extra professional when original design concepts are followed through from initial photography to final output.

If you are unfamiliar with Kendra, she plays the piano, violin, banjo, she sings, she orchestrates, she really does it all. You have to read her bio on her website. And here are a few more images we created before.

I like websites that are engaging and are photographically and visually impactful. For her opening page, we did a full bleed page that’s responsive and adjusts to the device and computer screen you’re viewing on. I wanted a variety of images, so I pulled photographs from past events too, like this recent event where she played for David Archuleta and Lexi Walker.
