Karen’s Beautiful Rainy Day Family Portraits

I recently posted on Facebook about installing this large 7×4 foot portrait, and included with a few images of me hanging it. I received a bigger response than usual, 260+ likes, 30+ comments, and private messages from people asking how I did it. So I thought it’d make a great blog post.

Here I am hanging the portrait with a couple large Little Giant ladders that still were’t quite tall enough.

Bry Cox hanging a beautiful 7’x4′ family portrait in this beautiful home. The size of a photograph should fit the space properly.

And here is the portrait so you can see the details better. This family had grown quite a bit with married kids and lots of cute new grandkids. So when they hired me, they wanted to make sure that they could see everyone’s faces and could enjoy the image from the given viewing distance of the room.

BryCox_KarenK-F01

The day of the shoot was cold and rainy but I still wanted to create the image outside. Yes, they have a large home and we could have set up in a room somewhere, or I could have even set up a studio in their gym, but I always emphasize my specialty of lighting and emotion, and I knew I could create something with more drama outside in front of their home. And yes, we could have rescheduled for a pretty, sunny day, but I don’t like to reschedule for lots of reasons.

One, many times like this, it’s the only day when family is all in town. Two, sometimes rescheduling means the portrait is never created. And three, rain makes for really beautiful and saturated colors when custom lighting is handled the right way. Plus after 20+ years of creating photographs full time for clients I know that I can work within the cycles of a rain storm as it goes from a big downpour to a slow drizzle to hard rain again.

The trick is to be all set and shoot quickly when the rain slows down so that I’m done before the next wave of hard rain comes again. And that’s what I did. While the family waited in the warmth inside, I set up my lights and camera and had everything metered and ready to go. I kept everything covered until we had a lull in the storm, and then had everyone come outside and we began working.

BryCox_KarenK-F02

Storm or not, I pose and position people quickly and in natural stances, then I play with the kids with a puppet routine that I’ve worked up over the years. I love it when even the tiniest kids, babies really that can’t even talk are laughing at my puppet show because they know it’s funny.

I started with the largest family group, and moved quickly to individual family groups. I only shoot about 3-5 images per family because I don’t want to wear people out, or exhaust the natural smiles of the children. And on this night we had other reasons to hurry as the rain was starting to get heavy again.
BryCox_KarenK-F03

Besides the biggest group I was able to get two other families groups shot before the rain hit hard again, so I moved under the awning that can be seen in the earlier groups. Again, I wanted to stay outside so that all of the family groups would have a uniform look, color scheme, feel, and lighting style. I want them all to look good when hung together and not look like different shoots. So working under the awning was perfect because the clients were able to stay dry (even though I was standing in the rain), and we were able to finish the session so that everything matched and looked beautiful.

BryCox_KarenK-F04

I love that this little baby is laughing. In the big family group, she was the kid laughing the loudest at my silly puppet routine.

At some point, no matter how fast you work, kids are spent. They only have so much energy for photos, but it’s still fun to try and get a grandkids photo, even if some are crying. We did one under the awning and then went inside to the fireplace and did one big casual group of the entire family.

Here is a view of their finished portrait in their home. The most common concern with families is getting your portrait too big or too small for where it is hanging. You want to be able to see faces and it is hard to imagine sizes when looking at a price menu. That is why I preview your order on a projector so that you can see your exact image at the exact size you’d like it. And if you know you’re getting over a certain size, I’ll come to your home and will help measure walls so that we get it absolutely perfect. And yes, I’ll even come hang it for you too.

Kim’s Portland Temple LDS Wedding Sneak Peek

Kim’s wedding was really magical. Besides being a beautiful bride, we also had the gorgeous backdrop of Portland and the LDS temple were they got married, plus a stormy sky for drama. Here is an early sneak peek into some of my favorites from her wedding day.

Jessica & Cory’s Wedding Sneak Peek at the Beautiful Draper Temple

Last weekend I photographed Jessica and Cory’s wedding at the LDS Draper temple. It was a beautiful sunny day, …in fact very hot at 100º. The sky was blue, we had great clouds for a dramatic background, and Jessica and Cory were great together. All that together meant that we created some wonderful images for their upcoming wedding album design. Here are some of my early favorites.

The reception was held outdoors at a beautiful home in Alpine, Utah. We had a great view of the mountains and the sunset. The party below wend on into the night as the couple’s closest friends came and enjoyed the music and the wonderful night.BryCox_CoryWedding_06 BryCox_CoryWedding_07

Liz & Dewayne’s Bridal & Pre-Wedding Portraits

I’ve been excited to share the images from Liz & Dewayne’s bridal and pre-wedding shoot, but wanted to wait until after their wedding. As you can see, we had a great time creating some wonderful portraits in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah using streets, textures, and pillars as out backdrop.

BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_01 BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_02

This dancing image above is great as both a stand alone image as well as in this trio sequence.

BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_03 BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_04 BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_05

The long lines in these pillars really makes a powerful impact, especially mixed with this great kiss. BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_06 BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_07

These two really look great together. And having shot tons of couples over the years, I especially noticed that these two were extra thoughtful and helpful with each other. Something I had to comment on during the shoot. But that feeling really shows in the images and makes these all the more romantic and powerful.BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_08 BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_09

As the sun dropped low, the trees in the distance created some wonderfully abstract shadows on these pillars, but also let a pocket of light light through in just the right spot to highlight the couple.
BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_10

It made a great place to also do a portrait of just Dewayne.BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_11

And to close, it’s always fun to shoot and design up a collage of the bridal details in black & white, showing enhances on the ribbons, lace, shoes, ring, flowers, buttons, and hair.

I know you’ll want to see some of their wedding photos and I will for sure post some later. But in the meantime, if you’re getting married and are looking for some incredible images, give me a call at 801-728-3317.

Band Portraits for Ryan Shupe & the RubberBand

This week Ryan Shupe & the RubberBand put on a show outside of Salt Lake City, Utah, and we used the opportunity to shoot some new band portraits. These kinds of images are used for posters, marketing, web sites, and overall band promotion.

Band portraits need to be iconic, visually interesting, they need to show the vibe of the band so that you know what a live show will be like. Band portraits need to show personality, they can’t be mundane or normal. So all of that means that band portraits are no different than any other portrait I create for people – they need to have exquisite lighting and emotion.

For this image, I envisioned the band on stage with Ryan up front looking right into the camera. I wanted instruments showing and also all the feel of the stage with the stage lights and smoke – except it’s not possible to do a shot like that during the show with an amphitheater full of people. It had to be shot during the day before the show. So I set it up, lit the scene, and shot it knowing I’d be recreating from scratch the entire “feel” of the stage later in post production.

Cox_RShupe_Sandy2015-178-Edge

Above is the final version after all the digital work. And below, is an animation of my progress. In the animation it may come together in just a few seconds, but it didn’t take seconds to make.

Notice how in the first and completely raw shot, the skin tones and lighting on the individuals is perfect, but it’s in the middle of the day. It doesn’t look like night and there are no stage lights. From there I slowly build it up, painting in from scratch the stage lights, the atmosphere, the smoke, as well as the effects of the colored lights on Ryan, his jacket, on the band, and on the walls. I’m constantly asking myself, how would this light affect the scene? Where would it be visible? Because of where Ryan is standing, he is being lit with the most diverse set of colored lights from various places. How those lights all skim across his black leather jacket have all been painted in.

The result is something both real and natural to the eye, but also is a shot that could not have been created otherwise. It’s an impactful image.

BryCox_RShupeBandPic_Animation1b

This second band portrait was created to look real and natural, to be impactful, and to also show the energy of the group. But it wasn’t originally shot like this either.
Cox_RShupe_Sandy2015-BandPhoto1-bw2-Edge

To create it, I individually lit and shot each band member separately. I then took the best of each individual and put this together, lining up each brick and line in the background to match the bending perspective shift created by my camera’s angle and lens choice. I really liked the wide angle feel and the bending of the bricks created by that. There was a lot of very small and detailed painting needed to get all of these image to seamlessly blend together, and for shadows to fall where they should, and for the creation of shadows and mixing shadows. But the end result is a really cool and iconic band picture.
BryCox_RShupeBandPic_parts

Here it is in color too before the final conversion to black and white. This color image could work for a lot of purposes when color is required, though in the black and white I did multi-tone it so that it grabs the eye even in b&w.
Cox_RShupe_Sandy2015-BandPhoto1-color-Edge

I was also hired to shoot some concert images during the show later, and I’ll get to posting them soon too. But for as much time as these took to create, I wanted to post today about these these band photos and what really goes into sometimes just one or two commercial images.

There are lots of commercial needs for great photos, some that require almost no Photoshop and post-production and some (like these) that require a lot. My specialty is lighting and emotion and I’m on the Adobe software team training photographers all over the country on advanced clean and natural Photoshop techniques. So for all your commercial imaging needs, give me a call at 801-728-3317. Tell me what business you’re in and what you’d like and let’s make it happen. Let’s create some iconic images for your business that make you shine.

Liz & Dewayne’s Engagement Portraits

I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to photograph Liz and Dewayne’s engagement portraits. They are a great couple together, and we created so many wonderful and romantic images that it was hard to narrow them down. Here are a few of my favorites.

BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Engagement_06

Being a photographer based outside of Salt Lake City, Utah, I’ve got a lot of options right here at my studio. For a lot of variety, we shot both outside in the studio gardens as well as inside the studio, and in color and black and white. And I always like to do a few images of the bride and groom individually too. For these I went with my high-contrast black and white series and these two images look wonderful together.

BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Engagement_04 BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Engagement_03This image is the official invitation photograph. I really like how great they both look, the sparkles in their smiles, and how close they are to each other in this.  I love photographing couples that are happy together because the images are even more romantic.

LaRae’s Wedding Sneak Peek

I had the pleasure of photographing LaRae’s wedding. It was a beautiful spring day full of joy and romance, and we were lucky to be able to shoot some images outside. The wedding was held in Layton, Utah at the Chantilly Mansion, and all the vivid colors made for a wonderful background to work. LaRae wore a vintage fur that she had inherited from her grandmother, and it really set off her wedding dress. We really had a blast taking photos that day and I wanted you to see some before the album is ready to show.

Andraia’s City Photo Shoot

One fun way to shoot outside in the colder seasons of Utah when nothing is in bloom is to shoot downtown in the city, using the textures and buildings as a background. Of course that only works for certain kinds of shoots and all the elements have to work together for an artistic theme, which is why this is such fun shoot to share. I think it is a great shoot where all of this works perfectly.

First, Andraia’s clothing choice of warm and black tones not only blended well with the colors of the city, but it also made her stand out and created a fun style for this fashion shoot. And secondly, she moves really well and takes direction perfectly which is really needed because lighting people in a city takes a bit of work. I need to light her to compliment her and also light for the background to create depth, and all the while be non-intrusive with the various stands and pieces of gear I’m setting up so that people walking by don’t trip or break my stuff. Yet the look is that no one is there and the whole image pops.

Cox_Andraia_001

I like these long lines of the pillars with her standing full length. The straight lines of the pillars and the angles of the steps are a nice juxtaposition against her curves and her stance. Plus it’s fun to have that splash of blue up in the far corner for balance.

Below, Andraia’s serious expression and the perfect material of her outfit is all contrasted against the old ragged stone.Cox_Andraia_002 Cox_Andraia_003

Down an alleyway, some elements and lines in the wall worked great for visual balance for this photo.Cox_Andraia_004

But the overall look and pose make me think of a painting too, so I took some time to create one of my unique paintings. I have creative ideas before I start but the painting process makes me change my mind and therefore I never really know what I’ll end up with. Here I ended up completely changing the background to a more abstract and textured background and I love how every part of this turned out.

Cox_Andraia_005

In this area, I really liked the gold railing and set up using an angle that made for a nice complimentary background while also hiding a lot of distracting things as well. But here we were more exposed to the street because we were right on the sidewalk. That meant getting a lot of distracting attention from passerbys who would stop, gather around, watch, or even yell questions to us. We even got some whistles. Yet, Andraia was a pro and wasn’t distracted, and continued to take great direction, move well, and even throw me a genuine smile for this shot.

Cox_Andraia_006

It is always a pleasure to shoot Andraia, and this shoot provided too many great images to choose from. But these are some of my favorites.

Jolie’s Wedding Album Design, Timpanogos Temple

Jolie’s wedding at the Timpanogas Temple in American Fork, Utah is beautiful. It was a hot day which meant a deep blue sky with the right handling of light. And mixed with the couple’s really fun personalities, the images are great and romantic. You may have seen their sneak peek earlier on my blog, but I wanted you to see the entire album.

Michelle’s Wedding Album at the Rock Church & Providence Bed & Breakfast (Logan, Utah)

I’ve been excited to post this wedding for some time because I had a wonderful day photographing Michelle & Tysen’s wedding at the Rock Church & Providence Bed & Breakfast in Logan, Utah.

The couple is so wonderful together, the day was planned perfectly, and the emotion in these images is wonderful. There was a lot of attention to detail with beautiful gifts for the guests, gorgeous flowers, a wonderful backdrop of flowy material and tall trees, and the sunset was stunning. The entire collection of images are romantic, dramatic, and the images tell the story beautifully. Here is their entire album design as a slideshow from morning until sunset.

The album design starts in the morning with the couple getting ready, then it moves to the bride and groom seeing each other for the first time (first sight portraits). Then before guests arrived, we took some time walking around and creating some really romantic images of just the couple. Then the ceremony starts, you see the family groupings, and then the really fun reception complete with live music, croquet, and bocce ball.

The music is by my sister, Elise (MusicByElise.com)

Governor’s Family Portraits

Christmas is almost here and it’s a great chance to spend time with families. It’s also a great time of year for family portraits while everyone is together, and this year I was honored to create the Governor’s family portraits and Christmas cards. It was a huge project as it also included designing and printing thousands of cards, as well as mailing them all out. Every day for a couple weeks I was working on this job to make it all come together, look great, and hit mailboxes on time.

I really love how it all turned out. I’ve had many clients that were on the Governor’s mailing list already comment to me about how great everything looked and how fun it was to get it. Here is the opening portrait on the card.

Cox_Herbert-2014-177-Card

I really work hard to make photo shoots quick, fun, and painless. It was nice to hear afterwards that they felt it was the fastest and easiest shoot they had done. Once I get everyone positioned and the lighting just right, I have a very goofy routine that mesmerizes the kids. I shoot what I need, but I don’t wear people out by shooting a ton. When I know we’ve got it, I move on so that expressions don’t get stale and people can get back to their lives.

I really love this big group portrait below. The Herbert family is a very nice and wonderfully big family with a lot of cute, little grandkids. The lighting in this area had to be just right so that the background wouldn’t be dark and black, but instead would be a nice medium warm tone that accentuated but didn’t distract – while at the same time making sure the faces on everyone was dimensional, even, and created great skin tones.

© BryCox.com, Bry Cox

For the card, I cropped it down to a long panorama that you see when you fold open the card.

Cox_Herbert-2014-109-Card1

And usually on the back of cards I just do my logo, but we added this cute group portrait of all the grandkids. There are a lot of great expressions in these cute faces.

Cox_Herbert-2014-115-Card

Of course we also photographed individual families too while I was there.

Cox_Herbert-2014-families

I really think it turned out great. It’s also been fun to hear from various clients of mine that have received the card. For instance, here is a sweet mention on Instagram from one of my good clients and friends Shauna Lake of KUTV news. She posted this when she got her card.

Pat’s Updated Fall Family Portraits

One of my favorite things about being a photographer is being able to work with some of the same families again and again. It is fulfilling creating a custom wall portrait that I know they will look at and love for years to come. It’s just another reason why it was great to hear from Pat wanting a new and updated grouping. The last time I photographed her family was in 2003.

It’s amazing how fast time flies and how much children change and grow, and it was really neat to see the original portraits in Pat’s home when I delivered her new and updated wall portrait. Notice how little the parents have changed over the years, but how much the children have grown. Some have gotten married and there are even some little grandkids too.

BryCox_FallFam_01

Cox_PatFall-2003a

And below are the kids alone. What I think is interesting, besides how much everyone has changed, is how I analyzed the group of kids both 11 years ago and today. In both cases I looked at the kids and saw a line, and grouped them boy/girl/boy/girl. In fact they are all in the exact same order with the exemption of swapping two girls. And we even did a slim-line crop again too. I love that.

Being a Utah photographer means having lots of locations to to use as backdrops. For the new portraits, we shot up in the canyons and for the original portraits 11 years ago, we photographed in my outdoor studio gardens.

BryCox_FallFam_02

Cox_PatFall-2003b

During the new shoot, we also created smaller family groups that we finished as squares. That way they could all be framed and hung in a grouping on the wall together.

BryCox_FallFam_03 BryCox_FallFam_04 BryCox_FallFam_05 BryCox_FallFam_06

It’s amazing how a photograph can stop time, and I love that the value of a photograph only grows over the years. If it’s time for a new and updated family portrait, there’s no better time. I can get things finished for Christmas for you and even get some cards done quickly too.
