It’s Time for Beautiful Outdoor Family Portraits at Bry Cox Studio

Warm weather is here, the studio gardens are in bloom, and it is time for creating fantastic and artistic family portrait heirlooms.

Look at this wonderful family portrait. I always like to create a few variations for the big family portrait so that clients can pick the one that matches the feel and mood of their own family. This image was their favorite grouping, a square composition with the children all leaning in close. I love the feel of this. Everyone has a beautiful and natural smile, everyone looks great, and is lit and posed wonderfully.

As another option, I also created a painting of them walking through the studio gardens as well. Images like this are great for hanging in another room.

After the big group, I like to focus on each child and create something unique of each one. I focus on personality and work on getting sparkle in the expression, as well as using custom and exquisite lighting that flatters each person, as well as creating depth and contrast.

The result should be captivating and real. Strangers should be wowed by it and feel like they know the person by the genuine expression, and there should be depth created by the lighting that makes you feel like you can step into the image.

Individual portraits of family members are great for creating wall collages and groupings for other parts of the house. Later, each image can be moved into a child’s room as the groupings in the main rooms are updated.

Decades later, when each child has moved on in life and gone their own ways, each of these images will be invaluable to them as well as other loved ones.

We can even do a mix of portraits in the studio at the same appointment if you’d like a different look.

Your family’s schedule in the summer can be extra busy and it can be hard to get everyone together, but creating these memories is invaluable and now is the best time to get into the studio.

Brandon and Christy’s Family

I had the joy of photographing Brandon and Christy’s family in my outdoor studio gardens.  The kids were so cute and adorable and we created some great images!  Look at this first one how everyone, including both small kids are smiling and looking great!

I also did an action photo of the family walking and interacting, and used that image to create a painting.  These paintings are finished on canvas and look spectacular!  The web doesn’t do this justice.  You’d have to see these up close.

I then did some individual portraits of each of the children.  These were the parent’s favorite images of each child.  Look at how big this little girl is smiling in this first one!

And this little boy looks so good.  You’d hardly believe that he was so wiggly.

Time is running out this year for outdoor portraits.  The weather is turning and fall is here.  Now is the time to book your family appointment.  Give me a call and let’s talk about your dream portrait: 801-728-3317.  The weather is holding out a bit longer and it’s a great time to get in, especially if you’d like some cards for Christmas.

4 Year Old Ashlyn

I love photographing kids.  I love getting them to laugh and smile, and I love to capture their cute personalities, all the while, lighting them professionally and artistically.  It is so fun!  So 4 year old Ashlyn came in for portraits, and we had a blast.

We started with some outdoor portraits in my studio garden area, and her smile was so perfect and genuine.  She laughed and smiled at everything I did.

We created images in her sun dress, with and without her hat and purse, as well as some tennis images.  Her dad is a tennis player and she loves to go play tennis with him.  I took my favorites from the session and designed up a collage that showed a mix of looks, styles, and various sides to her personality.  I love how it turned out!

If your little child is turning 4, or it’s time for some new portraits, give me a call, 801-728-3317.  The weather is holding out a bit longer and it’s a great time to get some fun outdoor portraits, especially if you’d like some cards for Christmas.

Donation of $4000 to Davis Education Auction

Davis County Education asked if I would donate a portrait package to their yearly auction that raises money for schools in the Davis County area.  I donated a few packages as well as gift certificates totaling $4000.00 in all!

I stopped by that night to set up my samples, and this is how the room looked!  It was a beautiful event.

I set up my samples and hung out to answer questions with people.

They had even printed a large banner for one of my tables.  This was the largest package I offered.it was a full event and they sold not only my packages, but a lot of other things as well and raised some good money for their cause.

I’m grateful that they called me and asked me to participate.  It’s a great feeling to be able to help groups and organizations that better our society.

I’ve donated to more auctions this year, then I ever have and would love to do more.  If you’re in charge of an auction, give me a call and talk to me about your group, what you do.  I’d love to talk about possibly helping with some donations.

And if you’re a client looking for some great new photographs of your child, family, or anything else, give me a call at 801-728-3317.  Aside from studio work, the outdoor gardens right now are beautiful and it’s time to get your shoot scheduled, as the summer is already getting booked up.

Music Portraits of Annie

I’m blown away by how gorgeous these images are of Annie.  She is a fantastic and incredibly talented musician and needed some portraits for her website, business bio, and other things.  I was happy and excited that she asked me to do these for her.

This first one is so captivating.  I love the expression and the feel of the colors.

This next one is gorgeous!  It is so pretty and has a real music vibe to it.

And next a black and white smiling image, showing the flute.  We used a wind machine in this one, and I like how real and genuine her smile is.

For this one I used some extreme fashion lighting and chose to affect the colors slightly, setting the red jacket off against a deep blue background.

And finally, one serious one showing again with her flute.

What a fun shoot!  I know Annie will go far with her talent, and I’m proud to be associated with her and her endeavor.  She’s going to go far!

If you need some fantastic portraits, give me a call.  801-728-3317.  It’s a great time of year to get in to the studio.  Thanks for looking and please browse my main website at BryCox.com (or my other blog entries if you’re reading this in a separate feed reader BryCox.com/blog).

Monica’s Family Christmas Portraits

I just finished up a wonderful order for Monica.  She brought her children in for Christmas portraits and they were so adorable.  It was such a fun session.

© BryCox.comI love creating custom collages, and this was the perfect fit for her children.  It really gave me the ability to show off the little kid’s different personalities.

We also did some family portraits which I used to create Christmas cards.  This was the front cover.

© BryCox.com

The laughing in this gave it the most impact, making it the perfect card cover.  But then when you open the card you see this…

© BryCox.com…another family portrait, with all the kids looking wonderful.  Then when you open this flap, you get to see these cute portraits of just the kids.

© BryCox.com

© BryCox.comThis was on the inside. right flap.  It’s the last image you see and is the card’s punch-line.  I love how the tinniest girl has just had it, the older sister is pointing at her to tell me that she’s not cooperating, and the little brother is just watching.  So funny!

Here is the entire card design as it lays flat on the inside.

© BryCox.comMaybe you know this family and will be lucky enough to get one of these cards.  But even if you don’t know them, you can’t help but laugh when you see these photographs.

This was such a fun photo shoot, and is part of why I love this time of year.  This is the season of family portraits, and it is always fun to see and photograph all of the families that I’ve gotten to know in my business over the years.  Some families I get to see every year and they seem almost like my family.

I hope you all are having a wonderful holiday.  Merry Christmas!

Roger and Liz

One of the things I love about this time of year, is that it’s the season for family portraits.  It’s also the time of year when I see friends, and sometimes, as is the case with this photo shoot, it’s a combination of both.

This is my good friend Roger and his wife Liz.  They just came in for some portraits, and I love how they looked together.

This first image just sparkles with love and emotion.  They look so happy together!

They needed an updated portrait together, and I thought black and white would best capture the emotion between them.  We took a few different images, but none of us could narrow it down to their one favorite.  We ended up going with these two images instead.

This second image shares many of the same fantastic qualities of the first, but yet it is so completely different.

Maybe you recognize Roger as the guitar player for the band, Ryan Shupe & the RubberBand.  But both Roger and Liz also perform together as a songwriting/singing duo called Forever Blue.  If you get a chance to hear either group, you won’t regret it!

Well again, we are getting close to Christmas as far as orders go, so if you’d like some fantastic images of yourself or your family, now’s the time to give me a call at 801-728-3317.

My Grandpa Tony

Over ten years ago, I switched my studio completely over from film to digital.  Digital photography was at the time very new, and practically unheard of.  Many told me at conventions that I was making a mistake.  But during that time, I went through the family’s old photographs and created this piece of my Grandpa Tony, who died long before I was born.

When people saw this, they flipped, and many asked me to create mosaics like this of their loved ones.  This started a new product line here at Cox Studio that I called the Cox Timepiece.

Just recently, my dad and others organized a Cox Reunion, for all Cox descendants going back to my Grandpa Tony’s grandpa, and down; something that hadn’t happened in about 20 years.  I was asked to restore many old photographs for my dad and others, so they could be on display at the reunion.

For myself, I went back and found this mosaic in my archives and reprinted it again, as digital printing has improved leaps and bounds over the past 10 years.

When I pulled it up on my screen, I was expecting to make some major changes since I myself have grown in my design and digital abilities over the past decade.  However, I didn’t make a single change.  I was not only impressed with the design, but I just I loved looking at these photographs all over again.

I love the photograph on the right with his tie blowing in the wind, the hunting photo, the suits, the smile….

…and in the bottom left, this vacation photo of my grandparents on the Golden Gate Bridge, dressed for fun.  Isn’t this beautiful?  I love the composition, the posing, the clothes, the paper, and the quality of this image.

I think there is a resemblance too in the family line.  Here’s a recent photo I did of myself here at my studio for comparison.

Looking at these images, I’m reminded of the importance of photographs as heirlooms.  Now more than ever, we’re being bombarded with cheap pictures and the ability to share and see them without ever printing a one.  Those serve a purpose, but the quality isn’t there.  And nothing replaces the ability to hold a photograph in your hand.

These old photographs of my grandpa, though many were snap shots, have a sense of quality, of lighting, and of composition.  They tell a story and were printed so well that they’ve lasted generations.

One of my favorite parts of my job is the final delivery where people can handle and hold their photographs.  Up until then, everything is viewed digitally.  But in the final delivery — after the retouching, the printing, the mounting and glazing and any other artwork is done — in the final delivery, there something tangible.  And with that tangible photograph comes an indescribable palatable feeling that only comes in being able to hold and appreciate a photograph, a feeling that doesn’t exist when seeing an image on a phone or computer screen, no matter how great it is.

Baptism Portraits

This beautiful girl is just turning 8, and got some new portraits to celebrate her baptism.  She was absolutely adorable and very fun to talk to!  Here are a few of the images from her portrait session.

We started off the session with some beautiful low-key images, meaning light-on-dark.  I started of with some classical style lighting, and moved to some fashion lighting styles.

Then we switched up the color scheme and brought in one of my favorite chairs and did a series of her barefoot in the chair, being a kid.  I loved how these turned out.

Then we ended with a fun portrait with her mom.  I was glad that she too was in light colored clothing.  This image is so stunning of the both of them.  Though we did some of these smiling, I prefer this one, the more contemplative one.  Both look beautiful!

70th Year Anniversary

This week I photographed Wilford and Elva Zaugg for their 70th Wedding Anniversary.  Their daughter called and set up the appointment, not knowing that the Zaugg’s were long-time friends of my parents since I was a child.

Wilford and Elva actually live around the corner from me and have since 1940 when they were first married.  They raised 11 children, and now have 58 grandchildren and 80 great-grandchildren!

It was very fun to see these guys again.  When I was young, Wilford owned a dairy and was the star in one of my mom’s church plays.  Later in life he donated much of his land for a school and church.

During the appointment, Wilford told me how he still works with his hands creating custom pens out of wood.  He even made many of the parts for his wood lathe that were needed for his fine custom work.  He even brought me a pen as a gift, so I took a portrait of him and his custom wood pens.

It was an honor to be apart of their anniversary portrait and reception, and I know that these images are much appreciated by his family.

If it’s time for a portrait in your family, give me a call.  And to see more of my work, check out my website at BryCox.com.

Happy Mother’s Day

Today is Mother’s Day!  I just got back from speaking in Texas, and have a lot of wonderful photo shoots to post and talk about — some fantastic and glamourous images I created here at my studio before I left, as well as work I did in Texas.

However, in looking them over and trying to decide what to post about today, I decided that I’d rather post a family portrait in honor of Mother’s Day.

This is the latest photograph of my family, and I created it at my sister’s wedding.  I set it all up, stepped in, and fired it with a remote that’s in my other hand.  It shows my folks, my sister, her new husband, and my grandma — it’s a portrait of the three women in my family.

I love that we as a nation, have a special day set apart just to honor the women and mothers in our families.  It’s a great day to show the love and respect that we all have for them.

There are many great lessons that I’ve learned from my mom, more than I could possibly list here.  Because this is a public blog, I don’t want to get too personal, but I’ll just list a few things that have to do with my business.

It’s because of her that I have a love of beauty and of working in my garden and yard (which is on my to-do list tomorrow).  She’s been my champion and my photographic critic, and is one of the reasons I’m an artist today.

Throughout the years, my mom has always encouraged me to do better, she’s helped me raise my level of quality, and has always helped me troubleshoot problems in my business so that I could go further.  She’s helped edit my books and magazine articles and has helped me become better at words and writing.

And it’s because of her and my upbringing that I have a love and respect for women.  Many people have noted over the years that I photograph women in a respectful and attractive way, without objectifying.  I owe this to my mom.  It has always been my goal for complete strangers to be able to look at one of my portraits and feel like they know who the person is inside in some way.  That I think, is a different and higher level of attractiveness.

My folks have taught me integrity, honesty, and a love for others, and I know that it’s because of them that I am who I am today.

So even though I’ve wished my Mom this many times today, I just wanted to say publicly, Happy Mother’s Day!

Adding a Lost Son

I just finished a project for a family who lost their young boy.  Sadly, he passed away, and the family wanted me to create a new family portrait, and digitally add in their boy.  They brought me this photograph that was taken by a team photographer.  They got written permission from that photographer for me to use it, and I matched the lighting angle, style, and color balance, in creating a new portrait of the family.

I then carefully cut the young boy out of this photo and added him into the family’s new portrait.

Though it’s hard to see on the web, I painted in a lot of detail work like shadowing and other small details that only the mind sees on a subconscious level — these little details make it look as though the boy was photographed with the rest of the group.

Because the last portrait of their son was in a team jersey, the entire family bought matching jerseys.  It was the perfect touch for both an emotional connection as well as making the image work aesthetically.

I then converted this to a custom black and white image, and finished it as a stretched canvas gallery wrap.

I also photographed the extended family and added him to this as well, matching the lighting on this group just as before.

And this last image was one of my favorites, a family line of the entire extended family as a long portrait, with each individual family grouped together.  This was finished this as a long 40 inch b&w portrait for the grandma’s home.

It was a real joy to deliver these images and not only see how great they looked on the wall, but to see how much the family loved them.  All of the extra time that I spent in the small details really paid off.  The work was impeccable and I know that these images will be cherished for generations.

I talk a lot about portraits being heirlooms, but this job really brought that home again to me.  It’s amazing how much a portrait is worth to us all, especially when someone passes away.  It was a real honor for me to do this artistic work for this family.  It makes me feel blessed to have the talents and business that I have so that I can do this for people and do it in a fantastic way too.
