Portraits for Lisa Hullinger’s Music CD

Lisa Hullinger had me create some portraits for her commercial project, her music CD titled Fairytales. We did two different shoots to get some variety of both studio and outdoor, and here are some of my favorite images.

This first one ended up as her album cover. It’s a very pretty image of her that shows personality, and also has a sense of spontaneity with her hair blowing.Cox_LHullinger-S-2046-color

This next image is great! It’s got a nice feel while being very simple in its composition.Cox_LHullinger-S-2139-cn

The pretty weather and location I think fit the mood of her design, as well as having a nice, relaxed feel. It was hard picking a favorite!

And here are a couple of my favorites from the indoor studio shoot.

Lisa did a great job at the shoots which made the sessions very fun. All of the songs on her album are original, she sings and plays on them, but you can tell that she paid attention to making sure that everything sounded great. I love it when artists follow their dream to write songs and take all the steps to produce an album, while paying attention to the fine details. I appreciate her including me in her project as her photographer, and I wish her luck with her project.

If you would like more info on her album and to hear samples, check out her website, LisaHullinger.com.

Until next time, America.

Tyler’s Senior Portraits

I’ve been working on Tyler’s senior portraits this week, and they are amazing! When I photograph seniors, I can push things further, use more of my edgy fashion lighting, and be extra crazy and creative. All of these images were created at my studio — none on location!

This first piece was shot inside at my studio, and I created the pool completely from scratch, digitally. I love how this turned out, the aggressive lighting pattern, the strong stance, the lines in the water framing and adding depth… all around, this is one of my favorite senior pieces I’ve created in a while.

Cox_TOBrien-Sr-252-Edge

Tyler is also a great basketball player, so I created this as a double-page spread for his album.Cox_TOBrien-Sr_Basketballcomposite

Here is another image in his basketball uniform, from behind, lit to be more dramatic.
Cox_TOBrien-Sr-208

I also created some wall collages like this trio…Cox_TOBrien-Sr_8x20

and this nine-up wall collage. These wall collages are a great way to get a number of different images in one cool display that can hang almost anywhere.Cox_TOBrien-Sr_21x21NinePrintComposite-dark

Tyler has also received his LDS mission call, so we did some missionary portraits as well. Here’s just a couple of those.Cox_TOBrien-Sr-121-5x7Cox_TOBrien-Sr-102

This is just a small sample of the cool images we created or that are going in his custom senior album. I really think Tyler is going to love these finished images. They show a nice variety of moods and looks, and years from now when he reflects back on this time in life, he’ll have some great mementos and heirlooms from that time.

Cox_TOBrien-Sr-162 Cox_TOBrien-Sr-215 Cox_TOBrien-Sr-228 Great shoot Tyler, and good luck on your mission!

And if you need some great senior portraits, it’s a great time for the class of 2013 to get in last minute, as well as the class of 2014 to get an early start. Give me a call at 801-728-3317 and until next time, America.

Melina’s Bridals and Pre-Wedding Portraits

I had the pleasure this week to create these images of Melina for her upcoming wedding. The session was a lot of fun, and we got some incredible images. This first one is one of my favorites. I really love her profile and expression in this, and how the light shapes and sets of her dress.

Cox_MHernandez-B-605-edge-8x10

And in the same set, a relaxed and beautiful smile.

Cox_MHernandez-B-584-edge

While shooting in b&w, I also created this detail series of Melina’s dress.

Cox_MHernandez-B-8x20-The-Delta-Red-I-I

We did a series of images in the studio and outside in the studio gardens for variety, including full-lengths, mid-lengths, close-ups, and couple portraits, and with a variety of backgrounds. One of my favorite sets was on the fashion gray. I finished these with some of my custom edges.

Cox_MHernandez-B-521-edgeCox_MHernandez-B-503-edge

We mixed the bridal session with a Pre-Wedding session to include some images of the groom. These two were great together and were very photogenic. Cox_MHernandez-B-545-edge

This series is great, particularly because of Melina’s genuine expressions.

And some of just the groom alone.Cox_MHernandez-B-530-8x10And here is one of my favorites from outside in the studio gardens. Their expressions are perfect, the leaning and relaxed pose is wonderful, and the background looks so good. Right now the outdoor studio gardens are green and looking great. It is a great time to book and shoot outside.

Cox_MHernandez-B-688-8x10

This was such a fun shoot and this couple was a joy to work with. I really hope that they have a great wedding and a wonderful future together.

It’s Time for Outdoor Summer Family Portraits with Bry Cox

Warm weather is here, the studio gardens are green, and it’s time again too book your summer family portraits and get the best availability.

One reason families sometimes put off getting portraits, is that they want to wait for the “perfect” time. They think that later they will look better, look younger, or then if they wait longer at least everyone will be married, but then they wait until everyone has their children, and then wait until everyone is home from school, …and the reasons keep on going.

But the truth is that now is really the best time. Families change and loved ones pass, and sometimes it’s too late to get a full updated family portrait. We all know that there is no perfect time, so let’s capture your family right now as it is currently. And if your worry is how you will look, remember that I will light and position you in such a way that you will love the results.

Here is large extended family group, created right here in the outdoor gardens. I work to position and light everyone in just the right way so that the overall image has emotional impact.

Cox_RCox-F-136

During the portrait session, I will also photograph smaller groups. For this session here, that meant that I photographed each individual family as well as a group portrait of the grand children. This way, every group has a new updated portrait if they’d like, but these images will also look great as a series of prints or as a wall grouping.

One of my favorite things about being a photographer is creating family heirlooms and works of art that will be enjoyed for decades. I work hard to mix technical excellence with emotion and great lighting so that you look great and love your new wall pieces.

Now is the time to book your family portrait. Give me a call at 801-728-3317. It’s always such an honor to be able to create something like this for people, and I’d love to create something wonderful for you.

Until next time, America.

Ashley’s Bridal Images

Ashley just did a fun mix of studio bridal portraits, including color and b&w, classic and edgy, close-ups and full length. Here are some of our favorites.

We did some in my white “lipstick” chair on a dark background to draw attention to Ashley’s white dress, and we situated her in such a way to really show off her fun shoes. This also shows one of the variations in how she may or may not wear her veil.

Cox_AJones-B-694

Next, is one of my favorites from the high-key, light-on-light set up. I used a fashion style of lighting to really make her eyes pop, and along with her great expression, fun veil, and Edgy-Edge finish, this image really sings. I think it’s probably my favorite from the entire shoot. It’s really a killer print up close.Cox_AJones-B-565-edge

And of course no bridal session is complete without a beautiful classic full-length. For this one we used very directional lighting for more extreme shadows to create more drama in the image. This really shows her entire dress and will be an image that she loves for years to come.Cox_AJones-B-576

I also created these collages, the first showing some of my favorites from the high-key fashion set up…

Cox_AJones-B-8x20-ooo-AnnaMarie

…and the second collage designed as a square to show off all of the various details, from her jewelry to her veil to her dress. I love creating these collages because they can show various images, moods, and textures all in one framed wall piece. And this particular design really shows a lot of personality I think.

Cox_AJones-B-21x21-Nine-Print-Composite-darkIt’s amazing how many people are going for beautiful studio portraits right now, breaking away from the look of cheap photographers who are photographing in alleys.

And because I have an indoor studio, now is a great time to make your appointment for bridals and take advantage of some promos going on. Give me a call at 801-728-3317 and let’s create some dream portraits for you.

Until next time, America.

Healey’s Family of 40

It is always important to get family portraits, and right now is especially an important time for the Healey family, and I feel really honored that they hired me to create the portraits for their entire family.

Overall, their entire group was about 40 people, including married children and grandkids. We set up in their family yard during a wind storm and rainy week, and miraculously found a dead spot from the weather. Their yard made for a fantastic backgound and the images all loom wonderful.

I’m excited to post them today, even though the web just can’t do them justice. This first image is now a beautiful canvas hanging over their fireplace.

Cox_JHealey-F-106

I love this large grouping. Everyone is positioned comfortably and realistically, the entire shape is balanced and keeps your eye moving, the expressions on everyone are real and happy, the background has depth and texture but is dark enough that it isn’t distracting, and lighting on everyone though difficult, looks amazing.

Big groups are more difficult to do right than you’d think, but they are very satisfying. I really love how this portrait turned out.  It has to be my new favorite.

Cox_JHealey-F-118

With every large family group, I also like to do smaller groups. Above is the original children gathered around their folks, and below is each individual family.Cox_JHealey-F-125

Each family is grouped and lit a little differently depending on the family, but the overall look of each group matches in case people want to create a wall grouping and hang these portraits near each other.Cox_JHealey-F-134

Each family has their own personality and every child looks great. I really love photographing families and especially love getting little kids to all look cute and smile. It’s more than just doing some tricks to get a smile, but rather work to get each child to show their personality in both the pose and their expression. These little boys below look perfect. I especially love the tough pose of the boy standing and leaning into his mother.

Cox_JHealey-F-159c

When people are positioned right, lit right, and they have a real and believable expression, the result is a portrait that is fun to look at, and yet classic and timeless.

Cox_JHealey-F-171These little girls below were so funny and wiggly, I was surprised to get any images with all of their feet down on the ground. They were so giddy and were laughing so hard at everything I did, that it was cracking me up too.

Cox_JHealey-F-188 Cox_JHealey-F-204

And finally, here is the couple that started this big group. I really liked this image of the two of them.

Cox_JHealey-F-208

Again, it was a real pleasure to work with everyone in this family. I loved all of the groupings and families, and love how everything turned out. I always feel it an honor to create and capture memories for people, but especially for this family. I really love these images and hope that they all do to.

Until next time, America.

Ryan Shupe’s Outdoor Family Portraits

Warm weather is coming and people are calling and thinking about outdoor family portraits. And though I can photograph families inside at any time of year, the subject of talking about families made me want to post family portraits that I didn’t get a change to post during the crazy Christmas rush.

Today’s posting is Ryan Shupe’s family. We did this grouping in the mountains near his home. With any outdoor group portrait, I pack in and set up a lot of gear and lighting equipment so that each subject is lit perfectly.

Cox_RShupe-F-140b

There is a push caused by new photographers to use “natural” light, but what that really means is haphazard lighting without any control. The truth is that controlled lighting should look natural, help create depth, and make people look amazing.

So after the standing group, I did a close sitting grouping. I always like to do a few different groupings of families so that people have choices. They really loved this close, black and white one.

Cox_RShupe-F-177And of course, some cute pics of the children. I was able to get all the children looking at me and smiling except the tiny baby. But she still looks cute and the overall image has a lot of personality.

Cox_RShupe-F-160

Then we did some images of just the boys. And though I had other options from this grouping, their favorite was the one with the smallest boy laughing and falling down.

Cox_RShupe-F-274And one of just the girls…

Cox_RShupe-F-253

Then just the little boys…Cox_RShupe-F-248

…and just the little girls. I got a great smile on the baby in this image.

Cox_RShupe-F-209

And then some individual of each child. These are great for wall groupings or album pages. You’ll notice a lot of personality in each child’s portraits and looking back on these in years to come will make them even more valuable.

Brooke’s Amazing Senior Shoot

It was so fun to photograph Brooke’s high school senior portraits. We did a complete senior mix session which includes multiple backgrounds and multiple outfits. Here is a quick look at some of our favorite images so far.

This cool horizontal image was created in the studio. I have multiple backgrounds and lots of lighting styles. The fun part is matching the right things together for the right person, making every portrait unique, fun, and personal.

I really loved these high-contrast black and white images of her. I used a fashion style of lighting, and mixed with her smile, the image is perfect.

I took my favorite three images from this set and created this neat trio below, which comes framed and can be hung on the wall or set on a small table easel.

Of course we battled the cold weather for a few images outside. Here at the studio location, we can go inside and out and really create a variety of different images.

Finally, we did a series of red images in the studio to match her school colors. This red-on-red look is really fantastic, and really draws the eye in.

If you’re a high school senior, I will make you some fantastic photographs. I’ve done work for all sorts of magazines and your images will be completely different and unique to you. You can use them on your facebook, but you’ll also have amazing albums and other products to look back on in years to come.

Right now before Christmas is a great time to get some portraits done. There are some great promos going on, plus I can get some things finished in time for Christmas.

Call me at 801-728-3317 to ask any questions and to set up a time for your awesome shoot.

Adelaide’s Baby Portraits

I had the honor of photographing little baby Adelaide before she went in for heart surgery. She was so tiny, cute, and adorable, and was a joy to play with. In fact, it was hard to pick out my favorites, so I took some of her many expressions and created this composite — the many faces of Adelaide.

And this series of her playing in her mom’s suitcase full of baby clothes made a great trio design. I love her waving in the 3rd image.

And to finish things off, we did a family grouping with her parents. She was so perfect, she posed and smiled in almost every image, though this was my favorite.

She was really a doll and a pleasure to have in the studio. She’s doing much better now too and I look forward to seeing even more of her through the years.

Point Loma Lighthouse, San Diego

While in San Diego for a wedding, I took some time in the morning to go photograph the Point Loma Lighthouse. Unfortunately, the road is controlled by a government installation and is not open at the right time of day when the sun is perfect. So I had to make due and be creative in making it look amazing during a very dull time of day, when the sun was in the wrong spot, and when it was crawling with tourists. Here’s the result.

Rather than shooting it the way I planned, I instead shot it black and white and used some fun lenses for controlled blurs. That way I could still get something exciting, while hiding the people.

I processed each of these using my own custom effects and distressed edges that I sell to photographers. It really helps give these images a unique look all around.

You would never know that the place was crawling with tourists in these images, and the b&w art effect on each of these really helps create an interesting and unique look on an otherwise dull, sun-lit day.

When creating this image below, I pointed up, blurring and darkening the ground with the lens, hiding all the people and tourists around the place.

I am really happy with the results of this shoot. It was a great creative start to a great day of shooting, and the wedding that followed was amazing! I’ll post it here later after the client has seen the images and ordered.

If you’d like some beautiful art pieces for your home or business, let me know. I have a huge collection of lighthouses and other scenics that are beautiful and inspiring. And if you’re a family, now is the time to get family portraits. Besides the nice warm weather and the studio gardens looking their best, I also have a great promotion running making it even more affordable. Wonderful Outdoor Family Portraits + Summer Promo

It’s summer, and now is the best time for family portraits plus, I have a great promotion running making it even more affordable than before! Right now when you call for family portraits, you’ll get a free session at the studio or outside in the studio gardens, and a free 11×14 ($199 value) with any wall print (size 16×20 and up)!

Family portraits are very important, not only to have now, but to have and look back on later in life.

I recently had the opportunity to photograph some relatives of mine. This is my uncle and aunt and their children (my cousins). It’s always extra special and fun to photograph relatives and create something lasting, because it’s for people that I have known my whole life and personally care about. In 20 years, when we all look back at this portrait, it’s nice to know that I was able to create this for them.

I love the close composition of this image, the relaxed feel, the real and wonderful expressions, the beautiful diagonals, and the exquisite lighting. The finished portrait was a 40″ canvas for their home.

We also did a series of 11x14s of the couples and children in b&w to match the decor of the room. We framed them all with black and silver frames, and the results were stunning.

It’s time for a new updated portrait of your family. Give me a call, the studio gardens are lush and beautiful, the weather is great, and I have a new, fantastic promotion running. Call now!! 801-728-3317 to set up a time. And feel free to browse my main website at BryCox.com.

It’s Time for Beautiful Outdoor Family Portraits at Bry Cox Studio

Warm weather is here, the studio gardens are in bloom, and it is time for creating fantastic and artistic family portrait heirlooms.

Look at this wonderful family portrait. I always like to create a few variations for the big family portrait so that clients can pick the one that matches the feel and mood of their own family. This image was their favorite grouping, a square composition with the children all leaning in close. I love the feel of this. Everyone has a beautiful and natural smile, everyone looks great, and is lit and posed wonderfully.

As another option, I also created a painting of them walking through the studio gardens as well. Images like this are great for hanging in another room.

After the big group, I like to focus on each child and create something unique of each one. I focus on personality and work on getting sparkle in the expression, as well as using custom and exquisite lighting that flatters each person, as well as creating depth and contrast.

The result should be captivating and real. Strangers should be wowed by it and feel like they know the person by the genuine expression, and there should be depth created by the lighting that makes you feel like you can step into the image.

Individual portraits of family members are great for creating wall collages and groupings for other parts of the house. Later, each image can be moved into a child’s room as the groupings in the main rooms are updated.

Decades later, when each child has moved on in life and gone their own ways, each of these images will be invaluable to them as well as other loved ones.

We can even do a mix of portraits in the studio at the same appointment if you’d like a different look.

Your family’s schedule in the summer can be extra busy and it can be hard to get everyone together, but creating these memories is invaluable and now is the best time to get into the studio.
