Architectural Photographs + Website Design for Ane Hatch & Associates

Many know that with my specialty in lighting and design that I will create architectural photographs for the right clients. It’s not easy to light and create strong and moving images of inanimate objects, but my job is easier when I’m shooting homes for Abby at Ane Hatch and Associates. I’ve been photographing her homes for years and I also design her company’s website.

Their look and design needs to be as clean, emotional, and professional as their work. They’ve won a number of awards, they’ve been in magazines, and they cater to clients who appreciate her impeccable tastes. Her company focuses on very exclusive homes and Abby starts from scratch and she imagines everything in her head, then puts all of these details down in her architectural drawings. She then oversees the building and then finishes with complete interior design. Her homes are works of art down to the last details, and I’m really excited to share with you one of her latest projects.

Mayzee’s One-Year Old Portraits

One of the fun things about being a professional portrait photographer for so many years is being able to see my clients grow and change. Many times I’ll photograph families, then the children’s engagements and weddings, then maternity, then baby portraits, then kids and new family portraits. It’s rewarding to see people come in again and again and see how they change and grow over time. It makes many of my clients feel more like family than customers as I’m a part of some of the big moments in their lives.

This particular family portrait has been a favorite of mine and has been a sample canvas on my wall for years. I’ve done a lot of portraits for them over the years and now the second to youngest son (two in from the left side) who is a young man in this family portrait, is much older and married. His wife recently called me.

BryCox_Mayzee_09

They have a beautiful sweet baby that just turned one years old. Her name is Mayzee and she came in for her one-year-old portraits.

She was a joy to photograph and warmed up to me really quickly. She would smile and laugh at me, and was cheerful throughout the entire shoot. Her personality had me laughing most of the time too, and she really responded well to all of my antics.

Here is a wall collage using a b&w family portrait in the middle and two smaller wall images on the sides.

And here are those images bigger.

BryCox_Mayzee_02 BryCox_Mayzee_03 BryCox_Mayzee_07

With her cute clothes and happy personality, we were able to do a variety of backgrounds and options. But no matter what prop I’d bring out to keep her in place and steady on her feet, she really loved my little blue chair the most. She’d push it around like a lawn mower, would sit in it, spin and turn in it, and if I brought out something else, she’d go get the chair and bring it back into the shoot.

BryCox_Mayzee_05

For this outfit and background I tried my little leather ottoman, but she quickly pushed it away and brought back the chair, as you can see in this trio design below. Another thing to note is that these photographs in these collages below have had zero retouching and no effects.

My specialty is exquisite lighting and emotion. That means that even before images are retouched that they should have the creative side of great expressions and personality, as well as the technical side of perfect skin tones, smooth skin, and sparkly eyes that pop. I don’t fake those things with software effects, filters, or painting afterwards. And the results are images with more emotional impact that I think people can see whether they’re trained in portrait photography or not.

BryCox_Mayzee_06

I really love this shoot and I’m excited to share it with you. There were so many favorites and such a variety of this little girl.

Liz & Dewayne’s Bridal & Pre-Wedding Portraits

I’ve been excited to share the images from Liz & Dewayne’s bridal and pre-wedding shoot, but wanted to wait until after their wedding. As you can see, we had a great time creating some wonderful portraits in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah using streets, textures, and pillars as out backdrop.

BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_01 BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_02

This dancing image above is great as both a stand alone image as well as in this trio sequence.

BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_03 BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_04 BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_05

The long lines in these pillars really makes a powerful impact, especially mixed with this great kiss. BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_06 BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_07

These two really look great together. And having shot tons of couples over the years, I especially noticed that these two were extra thoughtful and helpful with each other. Something I had to comment on during the shoot. But that feeling really shows in the images and makes these all the more romantic and powerful.BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_08 BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_09

As the sun dropped low, the trees in the distance created some wonderfully abstract shadows on these pillars, but also let a pocket of light light through in just the right spot to highlight the couple.
BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_10

It made a great place to also do a portrait of just Dewayne.BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_11

And to close, it’s always fun to shoot and design up a collage of the bridal details in black & white, showing enhances on the ribbons, lace, shoes, ring, flowers, buttons, and hair.

Caribbean Street Images Using My Point-And-Shoot Camera

I’ve been so busy with the studio and with speaking gigs, that I am behind on my blog. I’ve got a list of shoots that I’ve been meaning to post about and that list keeps growing. But I recently went on a spontaneous Caribbean cruise, and thought I’d share some of the images I created there.

A big group of friends were going on this cruise and asked us to come. I loved the idea for the photographic opportunities and chance to turn off my cell phone for a solid week, but we had said no because there were too many reasons why it didn’t fit into our calendars. However the night before the boat left, things seemed to just work out, so me and two other friends spontaneously just packed our bags and took a redeye flight to San Juan, Puerto Rico to see if we could somehow talk our way on the ship. After a crazy adventure in getting there, everything worked out and we stepped on board completely surprising everyone.

I packed my normal big bag of camera gear ready for any photographic opportunity, but ended up only using my small point-and-shoot because of the size and mobility. It’s more about how you use the camera than what camera you use.

Here are some of the images I created.

I always take my own photos, using a self-timer and an extendable pole. I used to come home from places with lots of photos, but no photos of me because I’m the one behind the camera. Yes, I packed my tux. It seems silly to take a tux on a boat, but since I wear it almost every day just hanging around my house anyway, I figured I’d take it.

Portraits for 12 Year Old Singing Sensation, Lexi Walker

Lexi Walker‘s YouTube video of her singing “Let it Go” from Frozen has over 50 million views. Being only 12 years old, she has fantastic control of her voice, and she’s getting more and more gigs like singing on TV shows, for various events, and with musicians like Michael Martin Murphy. All of this means that she needed some really cool new portraits for press kits, gigs, and web use.

Cox_LWalker2014-162-color

Years ago I named my studio, “BryCox.com – Celebrity Style Imaging” because of my unique style of focusing on lighting and emotion. I don’t just take pictures of people, I work to create portraits that tell stories. For this shoot, Lexi is a very talented and beautiful girl. I wanted to show professionalism, skill and stage presence, but also show that she is a young 12 year old and fun-loving kid.

Lexi was such a fun girl to shoot. Even though she is young, she is very intelligent and precocious, and was fun to laugh and talk with. The shoot was a blast, and the images really show her personality.

Iconic Conductor Portraits

Did you know that KUTV’s weatherman, Sterling Poulson is a choir conductor? He is the founder and musical director of the Choral Arts Society of Utah, and their next event features a guest conductor from Germany. Sterling called me to photograph Eric Schmidt, the guest conductor for the event for use in posters, programs, and promotional materials. Here are some of the images I did for them.

I know that they needed a very nice but classic, color portrait with a warm brown background.

Cox_ESchmidt-154

I started with that, then decided to have some fun, thinking a really iconic and artistic black & white image would be awesome. The subtitle to the name of my studio is “Celebrity Style Imaging.” I love creating images that tell a story about a person, and this is exactly the right kind of shoot for that. I envisioned some images that showed personality and screamed “artist.” I wanted an image that would be intriguing to a complete stranger, and would say, “This is an artist who is interesting and proficient in his field.”

I decided on a high-contrast black and white look with sharper specular highlights, using a light gray background instead of harsh white. Here are the results.

Cox_ESchmidt-175-bw-edgeCox_ESchmidt-189-bw-edgeCox_ESchmidt-193-bw

I really like how these images. I think they are strong, impactful, and yes iconic. To see more about Eric and his upcoming event, visit the CASU website. And if you’d like a portrait for work or business, give me a call at 801-728-3317. I’d love to create something for you.

Centenarian Portrait, Wilford Zaugg Turns 100

It’s a rare thing to do a portrait of someone that’s 100 years old. And recently I had the honor of doing a centenarian portrait of a long-time neighbor and resident of my town, Wilford Zaugg. He lives around the corner from me and I can remember him always out in his yard or farm, working hard. As a kid I remember my dad bringing home corn and other vegetables grown in his farm and garden, and when my mom put on the town melodrama ages ago, Mr. Zaugg said he had never before acted, but ended up being the star.

Before the shoot, I had a vision of an image that I wanted – a black and white portrait of him outside in his farm wearing his work clothes.

When I arrived for the shoot, he was all dressed up in his suit. I really liked him in his suit, so I started by doing some images in his home in his suit, with him showing off his custom wood pens that he makes. I also wanted some outside using his home as a backdrop, so we stepped outside and did some images in front of his home and a few in the back. At that point he thanked me and assured me that I had enough photos. But I still wanted that one image in my mind so I asked him for one more set created on his farm, but more casual, and maybe with a pitchfork.

He obliged, so with his jacket off and pitchfork in his hand, I got this image, my favorite of the shoot. I’m currently designing up a book for his daughter, and this is the cover.

BryCox-Cover-web

I love this portrait. Being in his church clothes is perfect. To me it tells the story of a long life of a strong ethics of hard work, church, and true happiness – a legacy he has taught by example to his large and growing family.

And below is the full-frame of that same image. The square crop is great for the book cover, but I really like it un-cropped below. I love the long lines of the silo, his stance, and pitchfork, and there is so much story in this image. And I really like him still in his dress clothes but with jacket off. He doesn’t farm anymore, so the dressier clothes are more true to him. Plus the white shirt is the brightest point and it really draws you in.

Plus there is so much character in the smile, the stance, and in the little details of his dress. For instance, you may have to look at the square cropped version above, but his belt skips a loop, and his tie sits just to the side with the smaller end sticking out. The lines of the pitchfork and the lines in the barn work together, and the framing within the silo and barn are so good. This was all created with some mobile lighting that I used to sculpt him while darkening the clouds and sky. I absolutely love the result.

Cox_WZaugg100-186-bw-edge

Mr. Zaugg’s daughter lined up this shoot with me so that we could create some photographs for his invitations, birthday program, as well as for the newspaper, and for the Governor’s office which is also doing something for him. We needed a younger portrait for some of these things so I did this scan of him when he first got married. I think he looks very handsome here.

Zaugg-Scan-of-Wilford

And here are some of the other images from the shoot, both inside his home and out. This one below is of Mr. Zaugg showing me some of the many pens he’s made from wood brought to him from all over the world. And he made these pens with a lathe that he made and kept out in his barn. I think about him making his own lathe, and I am inspired. There is a solid sense of contentment in this earlier generation that is lacking today. It was the sense that you earn the things you get over time, then you made them last, and continued to fix them. And if you couldn’t afford something or couldn’t make it yourself, you did without.

This image also shows off his national award winning deer rack in the background, and his award framed next to it from Boone and Crockett.

Cox_WZaugg100-121Cox_WZaugg100-169

It really has been an honor to photograph him again. I did his 70 year anniversary portraits some years back, and posted them on my blog too. But this project has been extra special. It’s been nice to work on images that I know his family will cherish, and to also hear from his daughter about the legacy of values that he’s left his family of 11 children, 52 grand-children, and 98 great-grand-children.

I hope we can all inspire and make that much of a difference in the lives we live.

And until next time, America.

Hunting Lighthouses on Vancouver Island, Canada

I love the adventure of hunting down and photographing lighthouses. It’s the perfect activity for someone like me with wanderlust. The entire process is cathartic and inspirational. It requires driving through un-populated areas on old curvy roads instead of fast and straight highways, it means driving with the window down and smelling the sea even if it’s cold outside, it means hiking and sometimes scrambling up and down mountain sides to get to the right spot, and it means sitting and watching light and soaking in the atmosphere around you with no one else around as I wait for the right moment to shoot. And in the end, I leave with a beautiful image that I hope others enjoy, but even if they don’t, I know I will enjoy it and the process of creating it.

This week I had a speaking job in Tacoma Washington, and decided to go a bit early to photograph some lighthouses on Vancouver Island, Canada. I love the adventure of photographing lighthouses, and really like the Victoria area on Vancouver Island. I’ve never had time when I’ve been up there to get out to the lighthouses and photograph them. This was the trip to do exactly that.

After landing in Seattle, I took my rental car over to Victoria, Canada on the COHO ferry. This self portrait is me with my point and shoot, on the cold and windy bow of the ferry. Even though it was cold, I always like being outside on a ferry rather than inside. Everything is different outside on a ferry, and it makes me feel like I’m on an adventure. You can smell the ocean air, you feel the droplets, and you can look off at the dark water beneath you as you crash through it.

BCox_Victoria-2014-526-edge

After landing and getting established in Victoria, I went out lighthouse hunting. I first photographed the Fisgard Light outside of Victoria. Access is only open during the day and when I got there, I was told hat the light itself was “closed” for the day, but other parts of the ground were open. I paid the fee and went to find an angle where I could still get close and photograph it, knowing I could get around the construction and workers. And that I did. I was able to get right up close, and I spent some time there hiking around the rocks and looking at the light, created these images.

BCox_Victoria-2014-213-edge BCox_Victoria-2014-223-Pano2-Edge BCox_Victoria-2014-243-Edge

I really loved the clouds and the dramatic sky, and thought a black and white would work well. Even though I love the red of the building, this black and white may be one of my favorites of this lighthouse.

BCox_Victoria-2014-257-bw-edge

Before leaving, I did this self portrait with the lighthouse with my point and shoot on manual.

BCox_Victoria-2014-570-color-edge

The next lighthouse, Sheringham Point, was quite hard to get to, being a long drive up the western coast of the island. Along the way, I looked for my favorite fish and chips hut on the water, but it was closed for the season. When I finally got to the lighthouse, I found that it too was closed — abandoned and gated off by the government. The surrounding land was also locked and controlled by a land developer. Everything was gated and blocked off. It took some hiking and some ingenuity to get to it, but here are the images I created.

BCox_Victoria-2014-425-Pano3-Edge

By this time, it was getting late in the day, and being on a different part of the island, the weather was dramatically different, giving this lighthouse a very different and beautiful mood. And the rocky cliffs to the side were my favorite part, and I thought were part of the character of this lighthouse. I found a way over to the side where I could photograph the lighthouse using the cliffs to frame it. These looked much more dramatic than the images of the lighthouse from other angles.BCox_Victoria-2014-481-Pano2-edge

I sat on this rock for a while watching the light move and change, and listening to the crashing waves beneath me. I thought it a cool place to created a self portrait with my point and shoot.BCox_Victoria-2014-594-edge

Being on the hunt, my mind was distracted all day. It was here sitting, that I realized that I still hadn’t eaten breakfast and it was actually dinner time. So I headed to the nearby logging town of Port Renfrew to get some fish and chips, and then from there took the long way back to Victoria, making a loop up and over the island using a curvy logging road. I arrived back in Victoria at night and got some Chinese food for a late dinner in Victoria’s China Town.

All along the way, I also took abstract images on my iPhone and posted them to my Instagram feed. There are iPhone pics of these lighthouses as well as abstracts from the ferry and other interesting things. You can see those here, http://instagram.com/bry_cox

Sari’s Wedding Album, Timpanogas LDS Temple

Sari’s album is all finished and I’m so excited for her to see it! Here are some of the album design pages from her book. Each of these images below is a double-page album spread, that is printed without a seam, and mounted and coated in the book. Below these images is a short video explaining how the book looks, and even shows this actual book.

Cox_Sari_05Sari is one of my close, dear friends from years ago, and we had a blast shooting at the temple. It was so fun seeing her get married, and her and her husband make a great couple. The weather that day at the Timpanogos LDS temple was gorgeous, and I love how beautiful she looks in all of her images.
