Kara’s Engagement Portraits

I just photographed a beautiful winter wedding for Kara which I may share later, but I first wanted to share a couple of her gorgeous engagement portraits. Winter is a great time to shoot inside in the warm studio, but the studio is also a great option any time because we have full control of lighting. It makes it easy to change clothes and shoot in multiple outfits if you’d like, we can quickly setup to shoot in both color and black and white, plus studio engagements are especially classy in black and white.

Kara and her husband are great together, treat each other beautifully, and they look beautiful in these engagement portraits. These were the favorites, and we used these in her wedding announcements, as larger wall prints to be displayed in their new home, and on display at the wedding reception.

This was such a fun shoot and I’m so happy for these two finding each other and getting married.

Jannette’s Snowy Mountain Wedding Engagement Portraits

Living near the Utah mountains, this couple wanted a snowy mountain look for their engagements. We were able to find some snow left to shoot these gorgeous wedding engagements at Log Haven up Millcreek Canyon, which is where their wedding will be later this summer too.

Here’s a video showing how beautifully their order of wall portraits and album turned out, best viewed in full screen.

And here are some of their images. We started on the deck of Log Haven because their clothes and colors worked so well with the deep, rich colors of the building.

We then ventured out into the snow to photograph against the waterfall and other snowy backgrounds. I love this tall image of the waterfall, and these two hugging and talking to each other.

Along the river we created this portrait, which became one of their framed wall pieces.

Then a change of clothes and a change of scenery, looking out across this lake with a deep blue sky in the background. This long panorama of these two leaning together is killer in the album, taking up two page spreads for dramatic emphasis.

And this beautiful close-up was the other framed wall portrait, as you can see in the video above.

Finally, some ending shots surrounded by the deep dark colors of the forest’s trees. These two look great together and I’m excited to be a part of their wedding coming up later this summer.

Audrey’s Studio Engagement Portraits

It was a joy to photograph Audrey and Juan together in my studio for their wedding engagement photos. Their wedding will be here in the Salt Lake City area, and engagement shoots are perfect for wedding announcements as well as beautiful displays to be shown at their wedding dinner and home later. Here are some of our favorites from the shoot. First, their double-sided wedding announcement portrait.

And this wall collage is great because it shows a lot of variety and personality without taking up a ton of wall space. It’s designed with visual balance and to keep your eye moving around to each of the images over and over.

And these trios are stunning. They tell a story in a beautiful, framed design that is perfect for a table easel or wall. And see what I mean about these two being great together? 🙂

I’m very excited to photograph these two on their big day coming up. They’re a wonderful couple, they’re very photogenic, and I look forward to meeting and photographing their families and being a part of their big day.

Alex and Kali’s Wedding Engagement Shoot

This week, Alex and Kali were married. But before their wedding, they came in for a really fun and romantic engagement shoot so that I could produce their wedding announcements and display portraits.

Here are some of their favorites. We started in the studio creating some really fun b&w images. This was one of my top favorites and theirs too.

We also shot outdoors in my very green and lush studio gardens. (Note: if you want to shoot outside, we only have a couple more weeks of this deep green look before the colors turn to fall.)

I like giving people a variety of looks, both inside and outside, and even changes of clothes. It means that my clients have more choices, but the variety also works well when designing composites and other products as you’ll see. My Utah photography studio location makes it easy to shoot both indoors and outdoors quickly.

And here are some more beautiful studio images. I shot these in color but imagined them b&w. But in the end, I think they looked even better in color.

The studio look is very hot right now. Yes, lots of people ask for outdoor because that’s all they see on social media – mostly because new photographers don’t have studios, plus lighting people is incredibly difficult especially indoors.

But I can offer clients a mix session of outdoor and indoor and see what they like. And it’s always amazing that people’s favorite images are mostly close-up studio images. I personally think it’s because there’s an emotional punch and a timeless appeal with such an image. And it’s also completely different from everyone else’s images. Most photographers are new and cheaper, and they’re learning as they go. They don’t have studio gear so they shoot on location in a beautiful location that catches our eye, but their lack of lighting causes dark and often blotchy faces which they hide with filters. Comparing that to great lighting that makes skin glow, and perfect expressions, you can see why people are asking more and more for a studio portrait.

Here is a composite design I made up for their wedding reception…

…and two gorgeous trios. These come in various sizes and are framed, ready to hang on your wall. Trios are great for telling little stories in three images.

And to end, here are two gorgeous photos of these two in dark colors on a dark background. They look happy to be together and I wish them lots of success and love in their marriage.

Kayla’s Wedding at the Jordan River LDS Temple in Utah

It’s a great time with couples getting engaged for me to share some weddings. This beautiful wedding at the Jordan River LDS Temple in Utah during the fall is of Kayla and Richard’s beautiful day.

I like to start out album designs with a full, double-page spread of where the couple got married. in this case I did an abstract b&w of the Jordan River Temple before the couple came out.

And here are a few page designs from her finished album, shown as double-page spreads. The idea of the album design is that every double-page spread should be a mini story. I also like the images to be as large as possible for impact when you’re holding the album.

But that’s really hard if each image isn’t crystal clear, which is one reason I believe most photographers don’t produce albums – their images aren’t clean enough to be printed well. That’s a sad thing, because half of the job of photographers should be to produce products that clients can enjoy as physical products, items that can be held in the hands rather than being small phosphorus image on a phone or screen. Digital sharing is handy, but there is something magical about actually holding an album and turning the pages, and having each image large enough that they come to life.

We had a beautiful and sunny afternoon to shoot, and you can see how happy the bride and groom are together. I felt honored to be there that day as their wedding photographer.

Kim’s Portland LDS Temple Wedding

It’s the day after Christmas and it’s the season when lots of couples are getting engaged. So I thought I’d share some beautiful weddings I’ve been wanting to post, starting with this gorgeous wedding that I did for Kim at the Portland Oregon LDS temple.

Here is a slideshow of her album design. It’s best viewed full screen in HD.

And here are some of the page designs from her book, shown here as double-page spreads. Notice that through the entire album, images are large, impactful, and the couple is happy and in love.

In contrast, one of the most common problems I see when photographers show me their images for a critique, are too many things out of focus. Like the bride is in focus but the groom is slightly out of focus, even though they’re standing right next to each other. Or one of the bride’s eye is in focus but the other eye or her nose is out of focus. Another common problem is that most photographers blow out their skies, and skin tones are dull and chalky. Now perhaps clients can’t see these problems when viewing images on their phone or computer screen, but these problems are horrendously exaggerated when trying to create a big beautiful album with large images, or when you want images for your wall.

You won’t see those kinds of problems with my wedding images. Every image on every album page is clear, crisp, and there is a feeling of a real three-dimensional world that you can step right into. Skin and eyes look great due to custom lighting, so there is no chalky look or over-retouched plastic skin on people. Just great images that you’ll love for a lifetime.

Liz & Dewayne’s Bridal & Pre-Wedding Portraits

I’ve been excited to share the images from Liz & Dewayne’s bridal and pre-wedding shoot, but wanted to wait until after their wedding. As you can see, we had a great time creating some wonderful portraits in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah using streets, textures, and pillars as out backdrop.

This dancing image above is great as both a stand alone image as well as in this trio sequence.

The long lines in these pillars really makes a powerful impact, especially mixed with this great kiss.

These two really look great together. And having shot tons of couples over the years, I especially noticed that these two were extra thoughtful and helpful with each other. Something I had to comment on during the shoot. But that feeling really shows in the images and makes these all the more romantic and powerful.

As the sun dropped low, the trees in the distance created some wonderfully abstract shadows on these pillars, but also let a pocket of light light through in just the right spot to highlight the couple.

It made a great place to also do a portrait of just Dewayne.

And to close, it’s always fun to shoot and design up a collage of the bridal details in black & white, showing enhances on the ribbons, lace, shoes, ring, flowers, buttons, and hair.

Josi’s Salt Lake Temple Wedding Sneak Peek

I photographed Josi’s wedding at the Salt Lake LDS Temple and it was a gorgeous and hot day, and I wanted to share with you some early images as a sneak peek before the album is finished.

I like to start off my album designs with a really cool art piece of the wedding location. So while waiting for the couple to come out on this hot day, I went with a dark sky and this black & white image of the temple. I like the shapes and wispiness of the clouds mixed with the solid lines of the temple.

When the couple came out, we created various group portraits, then left the group to focus on just the couple before their luncheon. We went all over the temple grounds creating images. Here are some of my favorites. A nice warm day with the right use of lighting means a deep, dark blue sky and vivid greens. Mix that with a beautiful couple and some romantic compositions and we have these stark and gorgeous wedding portraits.

I’ve had clients look at canvas portraits on the wall here at the studio or flip through my albums and say, “I like the ‘coloring’ of your images. They feel so real.”

I myself would never use the word, “coloring,” but I get what they are trying to say. Other photographers create images that feel flat, they then add skin retouching and effects that make people look like fake rubber. In contrast, none of these images have any skin retouching or effects. They are real images created with great lighting, and my techniques mean images that feel three-dimensional, with colors that pop, and a feeling of complete reality if not being romantically surreal.

The wind was kicking in here and there throughout the shoot, and I think wind adds romance to a portrait. So after getting set up in this spot I had them hold their kiss, waiting for the wind to move her dress in just the right way.

And I really like this dip with this graphic and symmetrical background.

The actual wedding album design takes a while because of the level of quality. Nevertheless when it is done, I will post about it here too. Janae’s Bountiful Temple Wedding Sneak Peek

I just photographed Janae’s wedding at the Bountiful Utah LDS temple. Being late spring/early summer, we had some awesome storm clouds. That meant that with the right lighting, I could create dramatic images with this awesome sky. It was an exciting day to be out photographing a wedding. And here are some early images for you all to see.

Even if you don’t know this couple, you can tell that they are great together. They were happy to be with each other and were very photogenic. It made for some amazing images. As you can see from these early previews, the wedding was phenomenal. I can’t wait to finish this album design.

I love the romance and feeling in these images and can imagine any of these as beautiful wall prints.

The actual wedding album design takes a while because of the level of quality that I produce. Nevertheless when it is done, I will post about it here too. But in the meantime, you can check out this couple’s bridals shoot that included the groom. Just a few days before the wedding, the bride flew into town and we squeezed in a quick shoot that I posted here on my blog.

Janae’s Wedding is Today, See her Pre-Wedding Images

Today is Janae’s wedding here in Utah at the Bountiful LDS temple. She lives out of state and flew in just the other day. So when she arrived we quickly squeezed in a bridal and pre-wedding shoot with her groom, here at the studio. Here are some of the favorites from the shoot.

This image above is their larger image for the wedding display. There is a lot of personality in this portrait and I love the stance, the smile, and the lighting really makes her glow.

And this trio of the couple together is so exciting and romantic. The couple was so good together, that it makes me excited to photograph their wedding. Everything is printed, coated, and framed, and these will be ready for display at the wedding reception. I know the wedding will be beautiful and I’ll post some images from the wedding soon.

Melina’s Bridals and Pre-Wedding Portraits

I had the pleasure this week to create these images of Melina for her upcoming wedding. The session was a lot of fun, and we got some incredible images. This first one is one of my favorites. I really love her profile and expression in this, and how the light shapes and sets of her dress.

And in the same set, a relaxed and beautiful smile.

While shooting in b&w, I also created this detail series of Melina’s dress.

We did a series of images in the studio and outside in the studio gardens for variety, including full-lengths, mid-lengths, close-ups, and couple portraits, and with a variety of backgrounds. One of my favorite sets was on the fashion gray. I finished these with some of my custom edges.

We mixed the bridal session with a Pre-Wedding session to include some images of the groom. These two were great together and were very photogenic.

This series is great, particularly because of Melina’s genuine expressions.

And some of just the groom alone.And here is one of my favorites from outside in the studio gardens. Their expressions are perfect, the leaning and relaxed pose is wonderful, and the background looks so good. Right now the outdoor studio gardens are green and looking great. It is a great time to book and shoot outside.

This was such a fun shoot and this couple was a joy to work with. I really hope that they have a great wedding and a wonderful future together.
