Amy’s Portfolio and Fitness Images

I love these photographs that I did of Amy.  She needed to update her portfolio, so we had some fun creating some really great images.

This first image is just captivating!  I love the look in the eye, mixed with the deep red background that matches her lips.

After a clothing and hair change, and a new set and lighting setup in the studio, and we made some new images.

I love the smile in these photos; it’s very genuine and makes these images.Another lighting change and a new set and we began the fitness images.

Amy needed more fitness images for her portfolio, and I thought they should look like they came straight out of fitness magazine.  Therefore I lit her like a magazine fitness shoot.

We then ended the session with Amy jogging outside on the street.  It was a creative way to spice up fitness part of the photo shoot.

I love creating photographs on my street — it has such character, and it really works in this portrait of Amy.

Amy was a joy to work with.  She was beautiful and fun, and I love the images we created.

New Award: UTAH HIGH SCORE!

I have won another award!  Yes, I won the high score for Utah!

My four prints that are in professional image competition, have gone on to the district/regional level, where I had the highest case score (total of all four prints added together).  From this point these prints will go on to the national level in 2012.

You may remember these four images when I first entered them at the state level, where I won Master Photographer of the Year, along with TWO Kodak Gallery Awards, a Judges Choice Award, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place, and the Court of Honor!  (past blog entry on these images.)

Here are the four images I entered this year.  I’ll keep you posted as they continue on, as well as keeping you up on the next four prints that will be entered next year in the State level in April.

Speaking in Portland

I’m asked to speak at a lot of photographic workshops around the country, and last week I was teaching and speaking in Portland, Oregon. This particular workshop travels the country to a new state every few months, and is called ‘After Dark.’  It is very hands-on for attendees, where everyone gets to directly interact and work with with me as I photograph all sorts of models in all various lighting conditions.

And here are some of the images I created while working and teaching how to use various types of fashion lighting.

But I also worked inside and out with various models for a few days.  Here are some of those images.

And on the last night, I asked my photographer friend, Angelina, to pose for a few images.

And I finally got a photograph of me!  🙂If you’re a photographer, looking to learn more about how to really light someone in a spectacular way and make anyone look photogenic, then check out my speaking schedule at BryCoxWORKSHOPS.com and come to an event.

McKenzie’s Fashion Senior Portraits

I had a ball photographing McKenzie for her senior portraits.  She has a great style and look, which worked great for my fashion approach to high school seniors.  Seniors really dig and appreciate my magazine and fashion style, and I love the opportunity to be more funky.

The light on light look is incredibly difficult photographically, but looks fantastic!  For all those photographers who follow my blog, these were shot as is, without effects.  The trick is lighting things perfectly.  And as you can see, McKenzie’s features work perfectly for this washed out look!

We did a mix of fashion studio portraits juxtaposed with funky outdoor portraits — all available right here in one place at my studio which also has a outdoor English-style garden studio.  In this image, I’m only using the thick vegetation as a background for texture.

More outside with a change of clothes, and I had a hard time deciding if I liked this better with stark lighting and in color…

…or soft lighting and black and white.  Both are good for different reasons, and again McKenzie really pulled this off well! Then back inside for some more funky images,With so many great photographs from this sitting, it was hard to pick my favorites.  But even still, the entire shoot was a blast and McKenzie was a joy to work with.

Bry Cox in THREE International Magazines This Month! (Part 2 – Canada)

As I mentioned in my last blog post, I’m in three magazines this month.  The second of the three is Gallerie, the official magazine of the Professional Photographers of Canada.

My article for them was about balancing the creativity with the technical aspects of photography.  The industry is swamped by new photographers and many of these photographers have creative ideas but are lacking in the technical areas.  These same photographers will say that they don’t want to learn the technical side of photography, because they fear it will make them boring.  This is because some older and established photographers may be very technical but aren’t very creative.  This group fears that more creative attempts will mess up the perfection of their techniques, which make them professional.

The truth is that everyone, all photographers in the industry need to properly balance both the creative and technical aspects to truly be masters of their art.

If you are a member of the Professional Photographers of Canada, this magazine should come to you automatically, and I hope you read and enjoy this article.

(Article published in Gallerie, the official magazine of Professional Photographers of Canada. Printed by Matrix Group Publishing Inc.)

And as soon as the Chinese magazine comes, I will post about it.

Bry Cox in THREE International Magazines This Month! (Part 1 – USA)

I am asked to write articles for various professional photographer magazines, and this month I’m 3 international magazines, all at once!

Professional Photographers of America, Professional Photographers of Canada, and PhotoWorld Magazine of China all asked me for articles, and coincidentally, they all printed this month, August 2010.

All US professional photographers should get this magazine in the mail automatically each month, but in case you’re looking for it on newsstands, here’s what it looks like.

My article is on Fashion Posing — how to break the traditional rules of posing to create something exciting.  The basis of my article is that you have to know the rules of traditional posing in order to ‘break’ those rules and do something completely different, but that actually works visually and compositionally.

Here’s how the first page of my article looks (page 82-84).

I’m not only honored to be in this magazine, but feel it a special honor that I am in this magazine at the very same time they have a tribute to my favorite photographer and one of my ultimate photographic influences, Richard Avedon.  Avedon was one of the most influential and longest standing fashion photographers in the industry, and he passed away in 2004.

He really raised the bar with fashion and advertising and storytelling, and I have sought after all of his art books (which are very expensive).  I think I own almost all of them now.  His article is on page 22-24.

You can see parts of the current issue at the official website, PPMag.org.  And if you are a regular Bry Cox Blog reader, then you’ll remember I mentioned writing this article in a past blog post.

As far as the the Chinese and Canadian magazines go, I have not yet received my copies, but will post about them when they come.

My Grandpa Tony

Over ten years ago, I switched my studio completely over from film to digital.  Digital photography was at the time very new, and practically unheard of.  Many told me at conventions that I was making a mistake.  But during that time, I went through the family’s old photographs and created this piece of my Grandpa Tony, who died long before I was born.

When people saw this, they flipped, and many asked me to create mosaics like this of their loved ones.  This started a new product line here at Cox Studio that I called the Cox Timepiece.

Just recently, my dad and others organized a Cox Reunion, for all Cox descendants going back to my Grandpa Tony’s grandpa, and down; something that hadn’t happened in about 20 years.  I was asked to restore many old photographs for my dad and others, so they could be on display at the reunion.

For myself, I went back and found this mosaic in my archives and reprinted it again, as digital printing has improved leaps and bounds over the past 10 years.

When I pulled it up on my screen, I was expecting to make some major changes since I myself have grown in my design and digital abilities over the past decade.  However, I didn’t make a single change.  I was not only impressed with the design, but I just I loved looking at these photographs all over again.

I love the photograph on the right with his tie blowing in the wind, the hunting photo, the suits, the smile….

…and in the bottom left, this vacation photo of my grandparents on the Golden Gate Bridge, dressed for fun.  Isn’t this beautiful?  I love the composition, the posing, the clothes, the paper, and the quality of this image.

I think there is a resemblance too in the family line.  Here’s a recent photo I did of myself here at my studio for comparison.

Looking at these images, I’m reminded of the importance of photographs as heirlooms.  Now more than ever, we’re being bombarded with cheap pictures and the ability to share and see them without ever printing a one.  Those serve a purpose, but the quality isn’t there.  And nothing replaces the ability to hold a photograph in your hand.

These old photographs of my grandpa, though many were snap shots, have a sense of quality, of lighting, and of composition.  They tell a story and were printed so well that they’ve lasted generations.

One of my favorite parts of my job is the final delivery where people can handle and hold their photographs.  Up until then, everything is viewed digitally.  But in the final delivery — after the retouching, the printing, the mounting and glazing and any other artwork is done — in the final delivery, there something tangible.  And with that tangible photograph comes an indescribable palatable feeling that only comes in being able to hold and appreciate a photograph, a feeling that doesn’t exist when seeing an image on a phone or computer screen, no matter how great it is.

Cheri’s Bridal Portraits

Here is a part of Cheri’s order from her bridal session.  I started with some fashion-lit headshots for some stunning smiling images, and to get a real and genuine sparkle in her eye.

And with those series of images, made this framed trio.

Then we went to one of my new in studio sets for a vibey grouping of cool images.

Then to some modern full length images that also have a classic appeal.  Beautiful lines in this one!

One to show the full dress and one with some funkiness to show the criss-cross back.During the session, we got a bit of rain, but we decided to go outside anyway and get some fun images of her outside in the weather.  I used one to create this painting.  The final paintings are finished as a stretched canvas with hand glazing.

This was a great session!  Everything looked so beautiful and Cheri and her mom were a joy to work with.

Baptism Portraits

This beautiful girl is just turning 8, and got some new portraits to celebrate her baptism.  She was absolutely adorable and very fun to talk to!  Here are a few of the images from her portrait session.

We started off the session with some beautiful low-key images, meaning light-on-dark.  I started of with some classical style lighting, and moved to some fashion lighting styles.

Then we switched up the color scheme and brought in one of my favorite chairs and did a series of her barefoot in the chair, being a kid.  I loved how these turned out.

Then we ended with a fun portrait with her mom.  I was glad that she too was in light colored clothing.  This image is so stunning of the both of them.  Though we did some of these smiling, I prefer this one, the more contemplative one.  Both look beautiful!

Aubrey

I had a blast photographing Aubrey!  She has stunning eyes and a beautiful smile!  She needed some images for her business cards and website, so I started with some nice images that would work good for her, both close up and full-length.

I then wanted to create some really great images of her with a fashion flare, and started with my fun white chair and model-gray background.

Aubrey always has great shoes, and I wanted to show them off, as well as her legs.  Between lens choice and a low angle, this really works.  But the curve in her waist really makes this image come together.

Then a change of clothes and we get a completely different mood.  I thought this white outfit was dazzling and playful!

Because Aubrey has such great eyes, I wrapped her in a large piece of blue gauze and came in close for a few images.  This was one of my favorites!

We ended the shoot with a series of her sitting on one of my unique carpets.  The color accented her dress, and it also gave me a chance to really show off her pretty legs and shoes once again.

What a fun shoot!  If you need some new portraits for business or just want some fun fashion images, give me a call.  801-728-3317.  And in the meantime, check out my website for more great images.  BryCox.com.

Trip to Lake Powell

Usually my trips are all business, as are my blog posts.  I usually like to talk about some my favorite images and jobs of the week here on my blog, but this week some of my favorite images come from a fun trip that I took to Lake Powell.

The trip was with my ward and friends, and we had a blast.  A side note, all of these images are with my professional point and shoot camera too — a small and completely manual camera that is great for travel.

I took this first image on my drive down, looking out my window while driving.

Our friend Benton, who is an expert fly fisherman, took my cousin Tony and I on a fishing expedition up the Colorado River.  We started here, just below the dam.  I call this image, “The best dam image of me.” 🙂

Here’s Benton showing off one of Tony’s catches.  With his help, we caught a ton of fish — all however were too big to keep.  It’s a funny rule on this part of the river.

Here was one of my catches, one of the biggest of the day.  If I could have kept it, it would have made a great dinner!

Here is a pano looking out from our boat.

Because of my recent knee dislocation, I wasn’t able to wakeboard with everyone else.  I’ve been working hard on rehabilitation, because I like being active and don’t want to miss out on summer fun.  My knee was feeling pretty good so I tried some light surfing behind our friend Mark’s boat.  It was great to get in the water.

If you haven’t seen or heard of this, you start behind the boat with a rope in order to get started, and then throw the rope back to the boat once you get your balance.   A pro can surf on that wake indefinitely.

It not only was a great trip, but a reminder for me to photograph my casual moments in life, as well as the professional.  Photographs are a great way to preserve memories not only for us, but for future generations.

If you need any photographs of your family this summer, give me a call.  801-728-3317.  And in the meantime, check out more of my professional work on my website at BryCox.com.

70th Year Anniversary

This week I photographed Wilford and Elva Zaugg for their 70th Wedding Anniversary.  Their daughter called and set up the appointment, not knowing that the Zaugg’s were long-time friends of my parents since I was a child.

Wilford and Elva actually live around the corner from me and have since 1940 when they were first married.  They raised 11 children, and now have 58 grandchildren and 80 great-grandchildren!

It was very fun to see these guys again.  When I was young, Wilford owned a dairy and was the star in one of my mom’s church plays.  Later in life he donated much of his land for a school and church.

During the appointment, Wilford told me how he still works with his hands creating custom pens out of wood.  He even made many of the parts for his wood lathe that were needed for his fine custom work.  He even brought me a pen as a gift, so I took a portrait of him and his custom wood pens.

It was an honor to be apart of their anniversary portrait and reception, and I know that these images are much appreciated by his family.

If it’s time for a portrait in your family, give me a call.  And to see more of my work, check out my website at BryCox.com.
