Business Portraits for Bryan Thayer

My client, Bryan Thayer needed some new portraits for his business, website, and book jacket.  He’s a marketer, author, and speaker and is redoing his website, BryanThayer.com as well as releasing a new book.  So here’s some of the images we created.

Bry Cox - Bryan Thayer headshot 1

We wanted a mix of casual and business, but needed portraits that showed strength and personality.  I really like this first image for that reason.  It’s got a lot of warmth and it is a great smile! We started out more casual and moved towards business, and created images in both color and black and white.

Then we moved to a gray background — gray is a great background for business portraits.  This particular shade of gray is used a lot in fashion and you’ll see it a ton in GQ magazine, but it’s also great when the background needs to be cut out for other purposed down the road.

Here’s one of my favorites in black and white.Bry Cox - Bryan Thayer headshot 4

And one of our top business portraits from the shoot.  It says a lot in one image, it shows strength, it shows power, and it shows kindness.  I’m very happy with these photographs and know that they will work for whatever Bryan needs now and down the road.  It was a joy to work with him and I hope his new endeavor goes really well.

Angela’s New Acting Headshots

Angela just came in for some new headshots and it was a blast!  She’s an actor and currently in a new reality show, and needed some updated photographs that were awesome, showed personality, yet had a classic appeal for agents in LA.  Here’s what we created.

This first one is a great close-up and looks fantastic in both color and black and white.  Her smile is real and captivating and her eyes genuinely sparkle.

Bry Cox - Angela's Photo 1This image was another one of my favorites.  I created it in black and white, and lit her in a unique way to really get a beautiful catch light in her eyes.  Again, her smile is great and I love the tilt to her head.

Bry Cox - Angela's Photo 2I know that Angela will do great in whatever she pursues and I’m glad to be able to cross paths with her and help create some great photographs.

So if you need an acting portrait or something just awesome for your various endeavors, or even just want a new and updated family portrait, give me a call!  801-728-3317.

Come Get Lost in Iceland with Bry Cox

Iceland is one of the most fantastically beautiful places on earth, and was named “Ice-land” by the locals in order to keep people from moving there.  It was a PR campaign that has worked, and has kept Iceland beautiful and untouched.  Come with me and explore the mountains, villages, countryside, and anywhere else the weather may take us as we get lost in the artistic journey of photographing this wonderful place.

Come learn and be apart of creating spectacular images in a land where the light is unbelievably gorgeous and the terrain is incredible.  In Iceland, the most beautiful light of the day, twilight, doesn’t just last 10 minutes, but 4-5 hours each day!

We will travel in incredible vehicles set up for us to charge our equipment if needed, we will stay in wonderful hotels, and we follow local guides who know the area and who will watch the weather daily, helping us make the most of our time in order to be in the best places needed to capture the ocean and shores, the clouds and storms, the grass, the meadows, the villages, the glaciers, and anything else we may see.

Come take the photographic trip of a lifetime and be blown away by the impressive and breath-taking views while soaking in the incredible fresh air.  This workshop is limited to a small number of people so that you’ll get both small group instruction as well as personal one-on-one help from Bry.  This is sure to help you see differently, be more creative, unleash the artist within, and create some of the best photographs of your life as well as learn how to electronically manipulate them into the most beautiful results possible!

(These two images come from the Iceland clothing company 66North.com website)

Perhaps we’ll meet and photograph beautiful and interesting faces while eating dinner in a local pub, or perhaps we’ll drive up to places that appear untouched by anyone.  Come get lost in Iceland with me, Bry Cox, and leave the outside world behind for a season.  Come have the adventure of a lifetime and leave with amazing and inspiring photographs of the most beautiful landscapes on earth!

NOTE: This is not just limited to professional photographers as most of my workshops are.  This is open to anyone that just loves to explore and take photographs, whether you’re a professional, a hobbyist, or even if you are very new to photography.  In any case, I will help you get some amazing photographs of this beautiful country as we explore and travel the countryside together.  Don’t let your photographic knowledge or lack of knowledge keep you from coming!!

For complete details, check out the official website, Focus On Nature, and please contact me with any questions.  There is 10% off right now through the end of May, and the fee covers the hotel stays and the travel that we’ll be doing from place to place.  You DO NOT want to miss this trip!!

Bry Cox – ‘Blue Eyes’ (Original Song, Live Performance)

This week our LDS singles ward was broken up and we held one last party, a talent show on Monday night.  There were a lot of wonderful performances by so many in our ward, and I participated by singing an original song.

I played the guitar and harmonica and posted a video of it on my facebook for my friends to see.  A few people including my mom have since asked how they could see it or share it with people who weren’t my friends on facebook.  So today I posted it on my YouTube channel and put it here in my blog.

I have written a lot of ‘love-gone-wrong’ songs over the years which is usually what I perform.  Like the blues, they are always fun to listen to and play, and everyone seems to be in the mood for that kind of song, no matter where they are in life — if your relationship’s good or bad, you always like hearing the blues.  Also, ‘love-gone-wrong’ songs are easier to perform as they don’t require me to open up my heart or show any vulnerability.

However, I have written some really cool love songs that I really like and feel are fantastic and moving.  My favorites grow on me and get stuck in my head, yet I never play them in front of people because they seem too personal.

I admire my favorite songwriters, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and Glen Hansard for their ability to write such great love songs.  I am amazed at their ability to be honest in their writing and for their willingness to be vulnerable and open to playing them and sharing them with the public.  It’s hard to play such deep and heartfelt songs in front of an audience knowing that many people will not even understand or appreciate them at all.  It’s one thing to hide behind someone else’s song, but it’s another to play your own.

So (1) based on the inspiration of my favorite songwriters, and (2) feeling that I always need to push myself into new and uncomfortable territory in life, and (3) because girls said they wanted to hear a love song and appreciated seeing more of that side of me, and (4) realizing that this was the last time I would see some of good friends from my ward for some time, ………I played a love song!

It’s a song I wrote while missing someone.  I was out of town on work, thinking of someone too much, and wrote this on the plane ride home looking out the window.  I have for years had my seat preferences set up with Delta so that I always get the window seat.  I love looking out at the world and taking that time to just think and ponder, and on this occasion with my head full of thoughts, I landed with a new and cool song.

Bry Cox playing the guitar and harmonica while singing

(This photo was taken by Sister Sansom, the wife of my bishop.  I appreciate her taking this as I never really ever get photos of myself, especially playing the guitar!  Thank you, Sister Sansom!)

Well take a listen and tell me what you think.  And let me know if you think I should put more posts up like this too.  I was a musician before I was a photographer, and though photography is my life and business, I will always be an artist and music is a big part of that.  The music side of me really helps the photography side. So on that ‘note,’ I’m off.  Thanks for listening!

Interior Photos and Web Site Design for Classic Interface

My friend Abby, of ClassicInterface hired me to photograph some of her interiors and create a website for her. She is an Architectural and Interior Designer.  Here she is on site at one of the photo shoots.

Abby from Classic Interface

This particular job of hers was a $300,000 remodel and she needed some fantastic images to show it off, and she called me knowing that lighting was my specialty.

Everything about this home was changed and improved and I think the end result is fantastic.  I love how these colors and textures all work together, and the furniture is so cool.

Interiors are very difficult to photograph, in fact they are some of the most difficult and time consuming things to photograph.  Most people would think so, but the fact is that all the angles, lines, and perspectives all have to be taken into consideration and mixed in such a way to create something that’s both attractive and interesting, while also drawing attention to what the designer wants to showcase, and this usually has to be done in tight quarters and spaces while making the place look spacious.

Exposures are also incredibly difficult for interiors, as there is a huge disparity between shadows and highlights that our eyes just automatically adjust for.  Many tricks and techniques need to be used to light and compensate, and in the end create an image that looks true to the eye and natural.

Abby also had me completely recreate and design a website for her from scratch.  She directed, giving me the look and ideas that she wanted, and I created and coded it all from there.  I integrated various flash players to keep the content in the window frame.  She didn’t want people to have to scroll down.  I love the design!  It is so beautiful, clean, and consistant.  Check it out and see what you think.  (ClassicInterface.com)  Note that it has a mixture of images I did for her as well as images she’s gotten from past photographers from past jobs.

Here’s a shot of one of the integrated flash players.  With this particular home, you can click on the thumbnails to view the home before and after, both inside and out.  The results are stunning and the end result is completely unrecognizable when compared to the before shots. If you need some Architectural or Interior Design work, check out Abby’s site.

And if you need some commercial photographs for your business, whether they be interiors, profiles, or even close-ups of your products that you can use on your website or brochures, then give me a call at 801-728-3317.  Lighting is my specialty, and I will make your products and business look like a million bucks!

Utahan’s already know Bill Gephardt as KUTV’s long-time investigative news reporter and fighter of dishonesty and scams.  He has always been a defender of the consumer and has worked hard to uncover and investigate fraud.  Well he has left KUTV and has started a new business, GephardtApproved.com.  For this, he needed some new commercial head-shots and portraits, and came to me!

His business is a wonderful idea for consumers, and completely unique, while being completely free!  He  investigates and approves only business that stand up to his background checks and levels of integrity, and offers a $1000 customer satisfaction guarantee to customers that have a problem with them.

Music Portraits of Annie

I’m blown away by how gorgeous these images are of Annie.  She is a fantastic and incredibly talented musician and needed some portraits for her website, business bio, and other things.  I was happy and excited that she asked me to do these for her.

This first one is so captivating.  I love the expression and the feel of the colors.

This next one is gorgeous!  It is so pretty and has a real music vibe to it.

And next a black and white smiling image, showing the flute.  We used a wind machine in this one, and I like how real and genuine her smile is.

For this one I used some extreme fashion lighting and chose to affect the colors slightly, setting the red jacket off against a deep blue background.

And finally, one serious one showing again with her flute.

What a fun shoot!  I know Annie will go far with her talent, and I’m proud to be associated with her and her endeavor.  She’s going to go far!

If you need some fantastic portraits, give me a call.  801-728-3317.  It’s a great time of year to get in to the studio.  Thanks for looking and please browse my main website at BryCox.com (or my other blog entries if you’re reading this in a separate feed reader BryCox.com/blog).

Ashley & Jeff’s Wedding Pre-Session

Ashley and Jeff just got married, and before their wedding, they came in for some fun and amazing photographs.  I photographed them at my studio location both inside using various sets, as well as outside, even though it was cold.  The results were stunning!

This was one of my favorites!  They look so great together, and the image is so loving!  And notice how almost all of their favorites were black and white.  Black and white has such a timeless quality, yet it is hip too.  It is a great mix of classic and new, all in one.

I love these of Ashley alone.  So beautiful!

And then we ventured outside.  I have a half-acre of English-garden style landscaping, but in the winter it’s not green and lush.  However, it is always interesting and beautiful in black and white.  Here’s what we created.  First this series of three images which will hang in a trio.

And finally we finished with them running off down my country street, as if they were running off to get married.

It was a great shoot and they’re a great couple!  I’m so happy that they found each other and I know that they will make each other very happy.

If you’re getting married and would like a pre-wedding session, give me a call.  801-728-3317.  A pre-session with Bry Cox Studio, is a great way to have cool portraits up at your wedding, as well as taking the pressure off of your wedding, no matter who you hire for your day.  Pre-sessions cost less than weddings, and are much more stress-free than a wedding — there’s no rush for time like on a wedding day, and no one’s coming to talk to you or interrupt you constantly like on wedding days.  And when they’re done at my studio location, we have the most variety of backgrounds both inside and out, without any travel fees!

Meghan and Bradley’s Wedding at the Salt Lake Temple

Meghan and Bradley came in to finalize their wedding order, and their album looks amazing!  I’ve sent it off now for final binding and am excited to get it back and finally deliver it to this wonderful couple!  Here are a few page designs from their album.

Each of these are two page spreads, folding in the middle.  I design and print them however each as a large wall print collage.  The resulting album is spectacular that has to be seen in person to really appreciate it.

The design is so fun, so fresh, and really captivates the love and emotions of the wedding day.  We really lucked out that day with a spectacular storm.  It left the sky at the temple cloudy and wonderful, yet the rain stopped during the time we scheduled for photographs.

Later that afternoon though at the bride’s home we were poured on constantly all night.  I love the drama that weather creates, and I love to capture that in photographs.  That stormy day made for some real memories and some wonderful images!

If you’d like to enjoy their entire album design, I’ve posted it on my website as a slideshow here. (Click here to view album as a slideshow.)  In fact, you can view all sorts of slideshows and albums by going to my website and clicking on ‘Slideshows’ on the left menu.

Vegas Fashion and Street Portraits

Oh wow!  I’ve missed some blogging.  But what a great way to get caught up, then with this post!  I recently taught a photographic workshop and created some very fun and fantastic images!  Here are a few of them…

This first set of images was to teach and demonstrate how to photograph women, how to light them, how to position them, and how to get great expressions that are real and exciting.

I then showed everyone how to post-process the images with some of my custom-made effects and edges.  I really liked this model.  I specifically picked her because she was fun and flirty and had a great look.  I loved her eyes and cheek bones.  We really got some great images!

This image was a great one for demonstrating how to create a real and custom painting, using a photograph.  I love how the dress and the background all work together.  The texture in this is awesome up close!

This image demonstrates my new ‘Holga’ Photoshop effect.  I wrote this effect to mimic the look that comes from using the old 120 plastic Holga camera.  It even mimics light leaks and lens aberrations too!  Very cool!

Same image but using another one of my custom-made effects.

For this next shoot I demonstrated making use of various types of experimental lighting.  Lighting should always compliment the subject, and always be under control, no matter what you’re using: sun, flash, reflector, softbox, umbrella, etc…  There’s never an excuse when you’re a professional.  Light should always compliment and work for the image, and not just be there to create an exposure.

So for this shoot I showed that no matter what we used for light, even using new and experimental equipment, the results should always be the same!

We demonstrated all sorts of different lighting equipment, both inside and out.  This image of her was taken outside using the hotel as a background.

This last photoshoot was done on the last night, very late at night after everything was over and done with.  It was actually a non-official shoot that we did on our own.  I wanted to do something down on the strip of Vegas, and found out that this model was LDS like me.  We sort of bonded for that reason and she was cool coming with me and a few friends to the strip at about 1:00 am in the morning in the pouring rain for a few last images before we all quit.We went to the Paris area because it had overhangs to block the rain and was also the least ‘cheap’ looking place in town.

This next image was shot down low using a very wide lens which elongated her legs, making her look taller.

These were taken just before we got kicked out of the area by casino security.  Apparently we can take all the photos we want with dumb cameras, but when you have a good camera, some gear with you, and a bit of an entourage, it suddenly is forbidden.  But that was fine.  It was late, cold, rainy, and we were getting tired.

On the way back to the car, we grabbed a couple more images in front of the fake Eiffel Tower.  This gal was a great model.  She really seemed to gather a crowd while we were photographing on the street.  We had a good time and had a great adventure.

Thanks to all these models for working with me, to all the photographers who came and supported the event, and thanks too to my friends for hanging with me and making the event so fun.

If you’re a photographer and would like to attend one of my events, please check out my speaking website for an updated schedule,BryCoxWORKSHOPS.com.  Also, if a big event isn’t your style or if there aren’t any events in your area, you can host a small and intimate event at your place as long as at least 8 photographers attend.  If you can get 8 or more there, you can attend for free!  Call me for more details.

Speaking at SYNC 2011 and Fun Beach Photos

I just got back from speaking at SYNC, held at St Pete’s Beach, Florida.  It’s a gorgeous location and an incredible event run by some wonderful people.  I was very impressed by the incredible turnout.  My room was setup for 550 people and was packed!

I asked my “out-of-town-girl-buddy,” Angelina to come help me run my table, and I’m so glad I did — we were swamped.  We ended up needing even more help, and other photographer friends that were there came and chipped in to help me fulfill all the orders.  So thank you to Angelina, Travis, Troy and Teri for your much needed assistance.  I wouldn’t have been able to do it without you all.

Afterwards, Angelina and I went out on the beach to take photographs and had a great time.  It’s exhilarating to just create photographs for fun, outside of any job.  The sunset was awesome and I even shot a little video.  Here’s a 1 min collage of clips I shot that day.  I edited it to look like 8mm film.

Here’s how the sunset looked that night.

And one of Angelina doing a self-portrait with her camera phone for one of her personal art projects.

A day or two later, we went back out to the beach and just played, creating fun images again.  Here’s a sampling of the images I created that day.

One of me because I seem to always come home without photographs of myself.

A fun one together…

Angelina is a great model.  She’s got a great style and she moves very well.  I’ve actually used her as a model now many times on shoots, even when I have officialmodels on site, because she’s usually better than they are and more fun to photograph too.  Take a look at some of these images and see if you can see what I’m talking about.

These are all shot with no particular purpose in mind, just having fun on the beach with our cameras.

And then the light started to go.  The sunset wasn’t as dramatic this night, but I was still able to use it for some great portraits.

And then one closing image of some palm trees.  This is a true motion blur, created by spinning my camera as I shot.  I took one blurry and one straight, and I like this one much better.  The blur adds some great interest for sure.

If you’re a photographer and would like to attend one of my events, please check out my speaking website for an updated schedule, BryCoxWORKSHOPS.com.  Also, if a big event isn’t your style or if there aren’t any events in your area, you can host a small and intimate event at your place as long as at least 8 photographers attend.  Call me for more details.
