4 Year Old Ashlyn

I love photographing kids.  I love getting them to laugh and smile, and I love to capture their cute personalities, all the while, lighting them professionally and artistically.  It is so fun!  So 4 year old Ashlyn came in for portraits, and we had a blast.

We started with some outdoor portraits in my studio garden area, and her smile was so perfect and genuine.  She laughed and smiled at everything I did.

We created images in her sun dress, with and without her hat and purse, as well as some tennis images.  Her dad is a tennis player and she loves to go play tennis with him.  I took my favorites from the session and designed up a collage that showed a mix of looks, styles, and various sides to her personality.  I love how it turned out!

Fashion and Senior Portraits of Blue-Eyed Grace

I had the opportunity to photograph Grace, and do some fashion and senior portraits for her.  She was so fun and had a sparkling personality, that I loved photographing her.  I had a great time laughing with her and focusing on really capturing her personality.

There are a lot of photographers all over the country who follow my blog, and for those of you looking, you should know that these images are all un-retouched, and all were created using one light!  That’s a cool thing!

This is incredibly unique because the trend with most photographers lately is to not use any lights because they don’t know how to use them correctly, but then use tons of Photoshop effects and retouching to fix the images later.  The result is weird smooth-skinned people with glowing white eyes, or images that seem flat, gray, and dull and lack punch.

The other group of photographers, are pretty good at lighting, but need to use multiple lights.  It normally takes multiple lights to sculpt a person correctly, create dimension, and separate the subject from the background.  I teach these exact techniques all over the country. (Photographers: visit my workshop site BryCoxWORKSHOPS.com)

But I also think it’s fun to do the seemingly impossible, and that is to purposefully use one light, and still do everything that you need to do with multiple lights, and in the end create images that are unique, different, that have personality, depth, and that grab you emotionally.

I love this stunning four-up composite of Grace below.  It is so interesting how all the images can be so different and yet work together so well.

I also designed her up a trio composite using some of my custom fleurs in the corners.  There are great products that when framed, can hang anywhere in the home.

I then used a beautiful Tuscan set to create these images, and felt that some warm lighting would complete the mood.  This color is not a computer effect at all, but rather how I actually lit her on the set.  Again, these images are un-retouched and have no effects.  I did however on this image below, add one of my custom made photo edges to this, to complete the old world theme.

And here is another of her on this same set, but serious.  I love her expression in these.  She was so good at both serious and smiling images.  Both types of expressions really draw me in on these images.

Miranda’s Senior Portraits

Miranda and I had such a ball during her senior portrait shoot.  She is fun, stunning, and an amazingly talented dancer.  I love to incorporate people’s personality into the images, and with Miranda being a dancer, we created a series of wonderful images that showcase this talent of hers.

Because she enjoyed my edgy photographic style, I was able to create some amazing images.  This first one is part of of my signature art piece line, and is created from scratch using my custom edges and overlays.  It really makes a one-of-a-king piece!  It works so well with this particular image because of her serious expression along with my edgy lighting style.  This image really pops!

And here is one of my other favorites from the shoot, her dancing collage which will look fantastic finished on canvas.  This type of collage is so satisfying as an artist, but it is incredibly time-consuming too as every part of this image requires digital manipulation.  Everything not only has to work together in a piece like this, but everything also needs to show proper perspective, dimension, and at the same time have color harmony.  In case you didn’t notice, I added her name to the background too!

I took some personality images in high-contrast black and white using a fashion style lighting that I use a lot for magazine work.  The result is this fun trio that comes framed and ready to hang on the wall.  Notice how all the images are completely different, but similar enough to create interest and tell a mini story.

Miranda got a Senior Mix Session, which includes both Color and B&W, both indoor and outdoor portraits using a number of sets, and multiple clothing changes.  This image on our rock path was one of my favorites from the outdoor shoot.

And of course being an officer, we needed some fun images of her in her Officer’s Sweater.  I took my favorite three that I felt had the most personality and created another fun trio.

Dallin’s Senior Portraits

Dallin just came in for his high school senior portraits, and being a football player, we incorporated that into his shoot.

I love photographing seniors because they are so much fun.  They really love and appreciate my crazy, edgy, and artistic side and I have a ball photographing them and creating the best images possible.

This first image is one of my signature art pieces that utilizes my custom edges and art overlays.  These signature pieces are finished with a heavy, textured glaze that really makes the image glow!  It is finished without glass and looks amazing!

We did the big shoot for Dallin, what I call a Senior Mix Session which includes both Color and B&W, both indoor and outdoor portraits using a number of sets, and multiple clothing changes.  This image above was taken inside on the fashion gray set which is a very specific shade of gray that you’ll see used all the time in magazines like GQ.

I love the expression on Dallin on these two images, the tilt of his shoulders in both, and how well the colors work so well above and the b&w works below.

I especially like black and white when done correctly, especially with moody lighting.  A Senior Mix Session is a great way to get a mix of outfits, both dressy, and casual, and get various backgrounds and sets.

I have a number of very cool sets at the studio, while also having a half-acre of English style gardens.  In one place you can get a huge variety of images quickly.

Dallin plays both football for Weber High School as well as golf.  We had a good time creating some very cool sports images for him.  I especially like this image below.

And finally, a fun image in casual clothes that is both fun while having classic appeal.  This is an image that is perfect for parents.  At Bry Cox Studio, I’ll create images that both you and your parents will be happy with.

And finally, here’s the wall composite, utilizing a few of the best images from the shoot.  The idea of a composite is to show different sides to someone’s personality while at the same time creating a design that is interesting to the eye and has a good balance to it.  These composites fit almost anywhere in the house and have been very popular!

Dave & Deb, Z104 Country (KSOP)

Dave and Deb at Z104 Utah’s #1 Country called me for some new portraits!  They are moving their afternoon show to the mornings, and they needed some new images to go with their marketing campaign.

We had a blast at the shoot talking about music, song-writers, and the industry in general.  It was fun to see how well they played off each other at the studio, and I can see why they are so good at what they do on the air.  We were all laughing constantly.

I loved the images that they picked too.  This first portrait of the two of them together captures what I wanted, which is how much fun they are.  You may have seen this on some of the billboards along I-15 this week.  It’s also on their website too.

We also did some individual images of the two of them, which I really liked.

I love the smile and personality of these two in their images and I’m so glad they called me for this project. It’s an honor for me to create the images for Utah’s #1 Country station!

As with many commercial jobs, I used a particular shade of gray that I love for the background, a shade that I call it “fashion gray.”  It is the most used color of gray in magazines and commercial shoots.  If you keep an eye out, you will see it everywhere through GQ, Vogue, or practically any ad you can imagine.  It’s so great because it’s neutral, it’s both classic and edgy, but it also gives the client the ability to change the background digitally later if needed.

Brook & Ryan’s Beautiful Snow Wedding

I had the privilege of photographing Brook and Ryan’s wedding last winter in the snow.  It was such a fantastic day and the beautiful snow storm made for some amazing images and a wonderful album design.

Here is one of the double-page spreads from her album.

What you see here are two page spreads that fold down the middle.  Each 2-page design is printed as one large wall print collage, then coated and book-bound into a sensational album.

I also love this double page spread below, two images on each page making a four image collage.  I love how in love this couple is and how fun it was for me to be with this family on this special day.

 

I have photographed this family for many years.  Though I’m pretty young myself, I started my business almost 16 years ago.  There have been families that I’ve been able to watch grow and change over time, and this is one of those families.  It meant a lot to me to be there for Brook’s wedding.

Bry Cox Playing Guitar at Soirée (Original Songs and Performances)

I played some of my original songs again at a recent house concert with my friends, but this time I brought my harmonizing voice pedal.  So besides guitar, harmonica and voice, I added the harmonizer pedal which doubles my voice into different harmonies on the chorus.  You can see me working the pedal as I play.

I’ve posted two of the four songs that I played that night.  Sadly, the other 2 didn’t get recorded.  But have a listen and enjoy!

As I mention in this first clip, everything is improvised.  I have only written down the lyrics and chords so that I can reference them as I play.  But everything else comes as I play and as I feel.  I really like the jamming and harmonica breaks on this first song!

It’s always fun to play and I’m trying to do it more often.  In the past, I have pretty much written songs and then put them in my book, not doing much with them after that.  But sharing them and playing them is very fullfilling.

Bry Cox Studio Donated $28,000 in Prizes to Stadium of Fire Contestants!

My studio donated $28,000 in portraits and prizes to the Stadium of Fire foundation as part of their big music search!  I was also there to see and capture the event as it unfolded.

The MC and Host of the event was Stephen Jones, well known for the BYU ad that resembled an Old Spice Ad.  (See it here on YouTube http://youtu.be/2ArIj236UHs).

There was even a performance by Kendra Lowe, one of the judges and also the director of the event.

The big winner was ‘Artie Hemphill and the Iron Horse Band.’  Here he is performing.  And here are some of the musicians that competed in the event.




It was a great event and I am honored to have been apart of it.

The point of this article was to show how I use a monopod to mount a flash fired by a PocketWizard.  This way I can custom light people with full control, and can move the light and adapt as the model moves.  The point of great photography is to always light someone in a custom way that makes them look good.  Most people just light the person in a general way.  By having my light mobile, I can constantly move and adapt to get great lighting as the client moves.

For my non-photographer followers, PocketWizard makes devices that sync your flashes to fire when your camera fires.  Normally you’d have to wire them all to your camera, but with these radio syncs, a wireless signal is sent instead.  This allows for wireless shooting which means putting your flashes anywhere, and not just where a wire will reach.

The brand new PocketWizard Flex and Mini systems have been improved to allow for E-TTL, meaning that they have electronics inside that compute how to fire a flash multiple times in a shot, and in just the right way so that you can use a flash with cameras that in higher sync speeds than normal.  This means you can get the look of overpowering the sun with a small and lightweight setup.

These devices are amazing and I have loved them.  And I really appreciate PocketWizard calling and interviewing me about them too.

Annie Rosevear Releases Music on iTunes, Recorded at Bry Cox Studio

My friend Annie Rosevear, who you may remember from this past blog post where we did music portraits, recently came over and used my sound studio to record, “Master, the Tempest is Raging.”  It sounds so amazing!

Annie is incredibly talented and she personally did everything on this project including the arranging, mixing, production and mastering, as well as playing many instruments on it as well including flute and piano.

Here’s a short 1 minute video clip of her and her group recording at my place.

You may notice from this video, that all the musicians are playing and recording each of their own tracks at the same time.  You may think that this is how music is normally recorded, but this is very unusual actually.

It’s easier to have everyone record separately, each laying down their own track in silence, then it is to record everyone’s tracks simultaneously.  Annie however, really wanted to record this way so that the final recording would have the soul and vibe of a combo playing together.  The result is fantastic!  Her vision was perfect!


We recorded everything here, then she took the files with her to personally mix, master and produce the final track.  It is now on iTunes and I am seriously blown away by her talent, and ability to do so much and wear so many hats in the music realm.  She really is amazing!

I urge everyone reading this to download her song from iTunes.  It is only 99 cents and is incredibly moving and inspirational.

Bry Cox Artwork in the Parade of Homes + Interior Photographs

The Parade of Homes just started, and one home in particular, home #18 off Fort Lane in Layton, Utah is worth seeing.  It not only is fantastic and designed very well, but it also features my artwork throughout the home.

It was built by Haskell Homes, and was designed by the team at Noble House in Bountiful, which includes my good and dear friend, Jenna Rix (JM Design Sparrow).

The large oil painting above the console there, is actually from my cousin, Tony Cox.  The image to the left, above the stairway, is one of my photographs, stretched on canvas.  This particular image I took while strolling the streets of Tuscany a few  years back.  It’s a 40×60 and fits that wall just perfectly!

Here’s that same room, looking the other way, back into the kitchen.  The design team asked me to also photograph the house, so these are some of the interiors from that shoot — the day before the parade opened.

I don’t normally get to shoot images like this one above when doing interiors, but fortunately Jenna loves this style.  She loves the kind of images that show you what the room ‘feels’ like, so I was able to play and get some of these cool images too.

Noble House had me design up some large prints for their store.  Here’s what they look like.

Haskell Homes are incredibly energy efficient and Jenna and the team at Noble House are fantastic designers and carry unique and beautiful furniture as well.  Everyone has been great to work with and it’s been fun to see how it all came together.

And you really need to see my artwork in person.  Some are images that have not been seen enlarged before either, like this rainstorm in Shanghai finished as a 40″ image.

Or this one that won a number of awards this year, “Fan of Wisdom,” taken at the Confucius temple in China.

This lighthouse was one of many that I found while photographing the coast of Oregon.  The colors were a perfect fit for the room it was placed in.

And this image was also in Oregon, near Canon Beach.  You may recognize the rocks in the background.  It’s called, “Looking Forward.”

iPhone Photos Flying into Salt Lake City

Flying into Salt Lake, the sky and the view was amazing!  Not being able to get out of my seat to grab my pro camera, I used my iPhone to get a few images out my window.  I love how the clouds helped direct the setting sun.  Light is everything, and I love what it’s doing here.  The colors and the texture of the mountains are just amazing.

Delta Airlines knows that if I don’t get my seat upgrade to first class, that I at least need a window seat on the right side.  It’s just automatic because  I love to look out at the city and the mountains as I fly home.  You can see the Draper temple in this image at the bottom.

This last image shows the Sandy area where I was picking out the homes of friends.  It’s always fun to look for familiar places as I fly in.
