Bill Gephardt’s New Portraits and Business – GephardtApproved.com

Utahan’s already know Bill Gephardt as KUTV’s long-time investigative news reporter and fighter of dishonesty and scams.  He has always been a defender of the consumer and has worked hard to uncover and investigate fraud.  Well he has left KUTV and has started a new business, GephardtApproved.com.  For this, he needed some new commercial head-shots and portraits, and came to me!

His business is a wonderful idea for consumers, and completely unique, while being completely free!  He  investigates and approves only business that stand up to his background checks and levels of integrity, and offers a $1000 customer satisfaction guarantee to customers that have a problem with them.

Here are some of the images we created for his business and website.

Bill is so fun to work with.  I’ve done photography work for him other times in the past both for his family and work, and he is as fun and likable in person as he is on TV.  We had a great shoot and I love the images and am proud to have him use them in his new endeavor.

Bill’s name carries a lot of weight and trust here in Utah, for his defense of consumer rights.  I am excited for his new website and business and think it is a genius idea!

So if you need a business that you can trust, check out GephardtApproved.com.  And if you need some awesome photographs for your commercial endeavor, or even just some new updated family portraits, give me a call!  801-728-3317.

Music Portraits of Annie

I’m blown away by how gorgeous these images are of Annie.  She is a fantastic and incredibly talented musician and needed some portraits for her website, business bio, and other things.  I was happy and excited that she asked me to do these for her.

This first one is so captivating.  I love the expression and the feel of the colors.

This next one is gorgeous!  It is so pretty and has a real music vibe to it.

And next a black and white smiling image, showing the flute.  We used a wind machine in this one, and I like how real and genuine her smile is.

For this one I used some extreme fashion lighting and chose to affect the colors slightly, setting the red jacket off against a deep blue background.

And finally, one serious one showing again with her flute.

What a fun shoot!  I know Annie will go far with her talent, and I’m proud to be associated with her and her endeavor.  She’s going to go far!

If you need some fantastic portraits, give me a call.  801-728-3317.  It’s a great time of year to get in to the studio.  Thanks for looking and please browse my main website at BryCox.com (or my other blog entries if you’re reading this in a separate feed reader BryCox.com/blog).

Ashley & Jeff’s Wedding Pre-Session

Ashley and Jeff just got married, and before their wedding, they came in for some fun and amazing photographs.  I photographed them at my studio location both inside using various sets, as well as outside, even though it was cold.  The results were stunning!

This was one of my favorites!  They look so great together, and the image is so loving!  And notice how almost all of their favorites were black and white.  Black and white has such a timeless quality, yet it is hip too.  It is a great mix of classic and new, all in one.

I love these of Ashley alone.  So beautiful!

And then we ventured outside.  I have a half-acre of English-garden style landscaping, but in the winter it’s not green and lush.  However, it is always interesting and beautiful in black and white.  Here’s what we created.  First this series of three images which will hang in a trio.

And finally we finished with them running off down my country street, as if they were running off to get married.

It was a great shoot and they’re a great couple!  I’m so happy that they found each other and I know that they will make each other very happy.

If you’re getting married and would like a pre-wedding session, give me a call.  801-728-3317.  A pre-session with Bry Cox Studio, is a great way to have cool portraits up at your wedding, as well as taking the pressure off of your wedding, no matter who you hire for your day.  Pre-sessions cost less than weddings, and are much more stress-free than a wedding — there’s no rush for time like on a wedding day, and no one’s coming to talk to you or interrupt you constantly like on wedding days.  And when they’re done at my studio location, we have the most variety of backgrounds both inside and out, without any travel fees!

Meghan and Bradley’s Wedding at the Salt Lake Temple

Meghan and Bradley came in to finalize their wedding order, and their album looks amazing!  I’ve sent it off now for final binding and am excited to get it back and finally deliver it to this wonderful couple!  Here are a few page designs from their album.

Each of these are two page spreads, folding in the middle.  I design and print them however each as a large wall print collage.  The resulting album is spectacular that has to be seen in person to really appreciate it.

The design is so fun, so fresh, and really captivates the love and emotions of the wedding day.  We really lucked out that day with a spectacular storm.  It left the sky at the temple cloudy and wonderful, yet the rain stopped during the time we scheduled for photographs.

Later that afternoon though at the bride’s home we were poured on constantly all night.  I love the drama that weather creates, and I love to capture that in photographs.  That stormy day made for some real memories and some wonderful images!

If you’d like to enjoy their entire album design, I’ve posted it on my website as a slideshow here. (Click here to view album as a slideshow.)  In fact, you can view all sorts of slideshows and albums by going to my website and clicking on ‘Slideshows’ on the left menu.

Vegas Fashion and Street Portraits

Oh wow!  I’ve missed some blogging.  But what a great way to get caught up, then with this post!  I recently taught a photographic workshop and created some very fun and fantastic images!  Here are a few of them…

This first set of images was to teach and demonstrate how to photograph women, how to light them, how to position them, and how to get great expressions that are real and exciting.

I then showed everyone how to post-process the images with some of my custom-made effects and edges.  I really liked this model.  I specifically picked her because she was fun and flirty and had a great look.  I loved her eyes and cheek bones.  We really got some great images!

This image was a great one for demonstrating how to create a real and custom painting, using a photograph.  I love how the dress and the background all work together.  The texture in this is awesome up close!

This image demonstrates my new ‘Holga’ Photoshop effect.  I wrote this effect to mimic the look that comes from using the old 120 plastic Holga camera.  It even mimics light leaks and lens aberrations too!  Very cool!

Same image but using another one of my custom-made effects.

For this next shoot I demonstrated making use of various types of experimental lighting.  Lighting should always compliment the subject, and always be under control, no matter what you’re using: sun, flash, reflector, softbox, umbrella, etc…  There’s never an excuse when you’re a professional.  Light should always compliment and work for the image, and not just be there to create an exposure.

So for this shoot I showed that no matter what we used for light, even using new and experimental equipment, the results should always be the same!

We demonstrated all sorts of different lighting equipment, both inside and out.  This image of her was taken outside using the hotel as a background.

This last photoshoot was done on the last night, very late at night after everything was over and done with.  It was actually a non-official shoot that we did on our own.  I wanted to do something down on the strip of Vegas, and found out that this model was LDS like me.  We sort of bonded for that reason and she was cool coming with me and a few friends to the strip at about 1:00 am in the morning in the pouring rain for a few last images before we all quit.We went to the Paris area because it had overhangs to block the rain and was also the least ‘cheap’ looking place in town.

This next image was shot down low using a very wide lens which elongated her legs, making her look taller.

These were taken just before we got kicked out of the area by casino security.  Apparently we can take all the photos we want with dumb cameras, but when you have a good camera, some gear with you, and a bit of an entourage, it suddenly is forbidden.  But that was fine.  It was late, cold, rainy, and we were getting tired.

On the way back to the car, we grabbed a couple more images in front of the fake Eiffel Tower.  This gal was a great model.  She really seemed to gather a crowd while we were photographing on the street.  We had a good time and had a great adventure.

Thanks to all these models for working with me, to all the photographers who came and supported the event, and thanks too to my friends for hanging with me and making the event so fun.

If you’re a photographer and would like to attend one of my events, please check out my speaking website for an updated schedule,BryCoxWORKSHOPS.com.  Also, if a big event isn’t your style or if there aren’t any events in your area, you can host a small and intimate event at your place as long as at least 8 photographers attend.  If you can get 8 or more there, you can attend for free!  Call me for more details.

Speaking at SYNC 2011 and Fun Beach Photos

I just got back from speaking at SYNC, held at St Pete’s Beach, Florida.  It’s a gorgeous location and an incredible event run by some wonderful people.  I was very impressed by the incredible turnout.  My room was setup for 550 people and was packed!

I asked my “out-of-town-girl-buddy,” Angelina to come help me run my table, and I’m so glad I did — we were swamped.  We ended up needing even more help, and other photographer friends that were there came and chipped in to help me fulfill all the orders.  So thank you to Angelina, Travis, Troy and Teri for your much needed assistance.  I wouldn’t have been able to do it without you all.

Afterwards, Angelina and I went out on the beach to take photographs and had a great time.  It’s exhilarating to just create photographs for fun, outside of any job.  The sunset was awesome and I even shot a little video.  Here’s a 1 min collage of clips I shot that day.  I edited it to look like 8mm film.

Here’s how the sunset looked that night.

And one of Angelina doing a self-portrait with her camera phone for one of her personal art projects.

A day or two later, we went back out to the beach and just played, creating fun images again.  Here’s a sampling of the images I created that day.

One of me because I seem to always come home without photographs of myself.

A fun one together…

Angelina is a great model.  She’s got a great style and she moves very well.  I’ve actually used her as a model now many times on shoots, even when I have officialmodels on site, because she’s usually better than they are and more fun to photograph too.  Take a look at some of these images and see if you can see what I’m talking about.

These are all shot with no particular purpose in mind, just having fun on the beach with our cameras.

And then the light started to go.  The sunset wasn’t as dramatic this night, but I was still able to use it for some great portraits.

And then one closing image of some palm trees.  This is a true motion blur, created by spinning my camera as I shot.  I took one blurry and one straight, and I like this one much better.  The blur adds some great interest for sure.

If you’re a photographer and would like to attend one of my events, please check out my speaking website for an updated schedule, BryCoxWORKSHOPS.com.  Also, if a big event isn’t your style or if there aren’t any events in your area, you can host a small and intimate event at your place as long as at least 8 photographers attend.  Call me for more details.

National Photographer of the Year, & Speaking at ImagingUSA PPA Convention, Jan 2011

I spoke at the national photographic conference, ImagingUSA in January, and had a jam-packed room!  It was awesome!  The event was held in San Antonio, TX and my hotel was just a block away from the Alamo.

I actually spoke twice, doing a lighting demo at pre-convention and then later on the main stage during the main convention.  The lighting demo was actually 3 classes repeated throughout the day.  Then later that week I spoke on the main stage.  Here’s a photo of the room looking from the main stage, as I was setting up.

I’ve spoken to some big groups before, but this is probably the biggest room yet!  The problem with a big room is that you can have hundreds of people and it will still look empty.  In fact some speakers that week only filled it half way.  But I was so happy to see it packed all the way to the back, with people standing too.

I was later told that I had about 1100 people — a full house!

The room was set up with four projection screens, 2 up front, and 2 half way back so that everyone could see, no matter where they sat.  My friend took this photo of me on her phone from the back of the room before it all started.

I like this photo because it shows the incredible depth of the room.  The brown podium and stage at the front of the room look so small and tiny from the back of the room, and here you can see all four projection screens.

While I was there, I also was presented with the national Photographer of the Year Award (silver level).  I barely made it in time for the group photo with the other Photographers of the Year.  I ran up on the stage just in time.  I’m on the far right.

On the national level, there can be more than one photographer of the year, and there are levels, bronze, silver, gold, and diamond.  I won the silver.  This is based on how well your images do in national competition.  I’ve previously won 2 other national photographer of the year awards too, in the bronze catagory.

On the state level, there is only one photographer of the year and one Master photographer of the year.  This year I am the Master photographer of the year for Utah, which you may already know from this past blog post.

So all around this was a great trip!  I packed my seminars, won more awards, and had a great time with my photographer friends from all over.

Bry Cox in PPA Magazine Again

Professional Photographer Magazine just came out, and I’m in it again!  They asked to use one of my images, which is actually one of my favorite images of all time.  It’s titled “Sax Man Joe” and is of an famous sax player from Utah named Joe McQueen.

Here is the page from the magazine (page 22).

It’s always an honor to be asked to be apart of this magazine, and I’m happy to have one of my all time favorite portraits in it too.

The subject of this photograph, Joe McQueen, is 90 years old and is still actively gigging.  During his life, he’s performed with jazz luminaries such as Charlie Parker, Chet Baker, Paul Gonsalves, Lester Young, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, and others.

If you’re a professional photographer, you should get this magazine automatically.  Here is the cover so that you can spot it.

Monica’s Family Christmas Portraits

I just finished up a wonderful order for Monica.  She brought her children in for Christmas portraits and they were so adorable.  It was such a fun session.

© BryCox.comI love creating custom collages, and this was the perfect fit for her children.  It really gave me the ability to show off the little kid’s different personalities.

We also did some family portraits which I used to create Christmas cards.  This was the front cover.

© BryCox.com

The laughing in this gave it the most impact, making it the perfect card cover.  But then when you open the card you see this…

© BryCox.com…another family portrait, with all the kids looking wonderful.  Then when you open this flap, you get to see these cute portraits of just the kids.

© BryCox.com

© BryCox.comThis was on the inside. right flap.  It’s the last image you see and is the card’s punch-line.  I love how the tinniest girl has just had it, the older sister is pointing at her to tell me that she’s not cooperating, and the little brother is just watching.  So funny!

Here is the entire card design as it lays flat on the inside.

© BryCox.comMaybe you know this family and will be lucky enough to get one of these cards.  But even if you don’t know them, you can’t help but laugh when you see these photographs.

This was such a fun photo shoot, and is part of why I love this time of year.  This is the season of family portraits, and it is always fun to see and photograph all of the families that I’ve gotten to know in my business over the years.  Some families I get to see every year and they seem almost like my family.

I hope you all are having a wonderful holiday.  Merry Christmas!

Benton & Shelley are Getting Married!

This summer our single’s group from church went on a trip to Lake Powell for some fun in the sun.  While there, Benton and Shelley met each other and are now getting married this week!  I had the privaledge to do their engagement portraits, and it was a real treat!  Here are some of the images from the session.

This first image was one of their favorites.  They got it as a larger print as well as had me use it on the cover of their wedding announcement design.  I love the feel in this image, and how they look so happy together.

We did a number of color and black and white, but it seemed that the favorite images were mostly black and white.  Here is one of those, using the street in front of the studio as a backdrop.

Next I did some individual portraits of each of them and used these to create a collage design shown below. And here is the final design.  I love these collages.  I design them to tell a story between the images and to show many different feelings and emotions in just one piece.  This was created as a larger wall item and is going to look so great in their home.

Here is close up of one of the images of them together.  I think they look so great together in this portrait. I know that they will be a happy couple. And here is a glimpse of their wedding invitation.  It is square, and this is the invitation folded out, looking at the front of the card (right) and the back of the card (left).  It folds down the middle.  This photograph made the perfect opening for the invite, because not only is it a great photo with a lot of punch, but if people open the invite and lay it flat, the leaves on the left make such a great transition to the back.

And here is the inside, folded out.  I blocked out the names, locations and other personal info, but I just wanted you to see this.  Again, it folds down the middle with the spacing of the image to the left making the perfect place for text.  Here inside, the image is more dramatic and romantic, and the couple is not looking at the camera but are in a moment with each other.  This image really works in the design because there is a juxtaposition with the image on the outside of the invite.

As you can see from their invitation, their wedding is this Thursday.  I wish them well and a big congratulations for finding each other and hope that their day is wonderful!

Again for everyone else, it is very close to Christmas and so it’s time to get in your final orders to me, even if it’s for one of my temple art prints.  Give me a call soon so that I can get things finished up for you.

Merry Christmas!
