Molly’s Outdoor Fashion Portraits

I love doing fashion work because I get to be more edgy in my creative approach, and I get to make women look great which is what portraits are all about.

For this shoot, I had a very fun and beautiful model named Molly with very pretty eyes. We set up multiple lights and other equipment to create some really unique looks quickly on our outdoor location. I especially love the balance of this first one, with her to the far right side, lit from a strong angle, thoughtful expression, and hair blowing back into the image.

Another one of her with hair blowing. I love her eyes in this image, and the toned b&w treatment.

I love this next one of her smiling. Though many of my favorites (as you can see here) were serious expressions, she really had an infectious and genuine smile, and this image shows that.

Here’s one of my favorite mid-lenths of her, a fantastic and sassy image with Molly framed by the trees.

And this close-up of her was in the same group of trees. I love the lighting on this, as it really accentuates her expression and her hair softly falling across one eye. All of these images also are finished with my new line of custom edges that I have created and sell to photographers all over the country giving images a unique finished look.

All around this was just a great shoot that produced some great images. If you’d like some great images of you or someone in your family, now is the time to book an appointment and come in. Give me a call at 801-728-3317 and let’s talk about your dream portrait.

Adelaide’s Baby Portraits

I had the honor of photographing little baby Adelaide before she went in for heart surgery. She was so tiny, cute, and adorable, and was a joy to play with. In fact, it was hard to pick out my favorites, so I took some of her many expressions and created this composite — the many faces of Adelaide.

And this series of her playing in her mom’s suitcase full of baby clothes made a great trio design. I love her waving in the 3rd image.

And to finish things off, we did a family grouping with her parents. She was so perfect, she posed and smiled in almost every image, though this was my favorite.

She was really a doll and a pleasure to have in the studio. She’s doing much better now too and I look forward to seeing even more of her through the years.

Commercial Images for Rhino Med Cart

People don’t always realize how important great images are to a company’s marketing campaign. Perspective clients may never visit the showroom, tour the factory, or meet the employees face to face, but they will have a perception of the company based on the only thing they see — the brochure. Therefore the images have to tell the story and fill in the gaps, and can’t just be snapshots of what an object looks like. Rather they must show what it is, what it can do, it’s level of quality, what type of people use it, and how buying it will solve the prospect’s problems.

Because of this, I LOVE creating commercial images for businesses and was excited when the Rhino Med Cart company asked me to create the images for their new brochure. They got me an ex-NFL player for my male model, and he was terrific!

All of these images were created on scene with custom lighting and exposure for a deep blue sky, and stark contrast for either color or black and white. The final design and brochure layout was in color, and here’s how it looks, outside front (right side) and back (left side)….

…and inside when you open it.

This is a very unique cart used on athletic fields. It is very versatile and incredibly durable. To show that, we had the almost 300 pound athlete stand on the outer lip. It didn’t break, bend, or even tip the cart over.

These carts can be stocked and used for medical and orthopedic purposes or as a drink cart with plenty of features for each use.

Interestingly, there was a problem with the first female model and her schedule, so instead we grabbed this cute girl last minute who was there working out on the track before the shoot. It was a good solution as she did a great job.

She was very personable and photogenic, and really helped show perspective when standing next to our big NFL male model.

I really loved the deep colors and the specific lighting style used in each of these images. It creates saturation and contrast and as a result, depth. When so many photographers right now are shooting images that are “flat” or “blown out,” it’s nice to create something so unique, different, and opposite – something that actually feels 3D, has depth, and looks sharp, clean, and professional.

If you’re a business and need some fantastic images created, give me a call at 801-728-3317. Tell me your vision and I will create images for your company that match your level of professionalism, quality, and attention to detail.

Hayden’s Senior Portraits

High school seniors and grads are a joy to photograph because I get to create images that are more fun and edgy, plus the seniors love it. Here is a shoot I did of Hayden.

Instead of just taking pictures of someone, I photograph who they are and that includes what they enjoy doing. Here is an intricate collage design of Hayden in his team basketball jersey.

I love groupings of images, and here I did some fashion lighting and created a series of three, grouped into a trio to show different sides to his personality.

Most seniors will get one of my signature art pieces like this one, where everything, the background, edges, and entire look are created custom every time in post production for a really unique look.

Black and white can be timeless and edgy if done right, and I choose that medium to create this image of Hayden in his officer’s sweater so that the attention goes right to his eyes.

School is starting soon which means that right now is the best time for the class of 2003 to make their appointments. Right now you’ll have your summer tan, summer schedule, you can beat the rush and get the best pick of available times, and there is a special for seniors in August! Give me a call at 801-728-3317 to make an appointment.

Sammi’s Graduation Portraits

I love photographing high school graduates. The seniors are so much fun to work with, and they love my fashion work so I can really go crazy! Here’s what we created for Sammi. This first one is one of my favorites. It gave me the opportunity to show off her sparkle, while also using many of my overlays and edges for a really unique piece.

Sammi is a dancer, and that’s a big part of her life. It’s important to show that off in an artistic and unique way, and it gave me a chance to create something that’s difficult to do, but looks great – a collage of different dance poses. Here’s the end result.

And a square collage is always a favorite and a fun way to show different looks and personalities, smiling and serious, dressy and casual, inside and out.

Sammi was a student body officer, so we needed to get something unique of her in her sweater too.

And finally, one of her favorites that we used for her graduation announcement design.

If you’re an upcoming senior, summer is a great time to get your portraits done. Give me a call and let’s create something amazing for you! 801-728-3317.

Point Loma Lighthouse, San Diego

While in San Diego for a wedding, I took some time in the morning to go photograph the Point Loma Lighthouse. Unfortunately, the road is controlled by a government installation and is not open at the right time of day when the sun is perfect. So I had to make due and be creative in making it look amazing during a very dull time of day, when the sun was in the wrong spot, and when it was crawling with tourists. Here’s the result.

Rather than shooting it the way I planned, I instead shot it black and white and used some fun lenses for controlled blurs. That way I could still get something exciting, while hiding the people.

I processed each of these using my own custom effects and distressed edges that I sell to photographers. It really helps give these images a unique look all around.

You would never know that the place was crawling with tourists in these images, and the b&w art effect on each of these really helps create an interesting and unique look on an otherwise dull, sun-lit day.

When creating this image below, I pointed up, blurring and darkening the ground with the lens, hiding all the people and tourists around the place.

I am really happy with the results of this shoot. It was a great creative start to a great day of shooting, and the wedding that followed was amazing! I’ll post it here later after the client has seen the images and ordered.

If you’d like some beautiful art pieces for your home or business, let me know. I have a huge collection of lighthouses and other scenics that are beautiful and inspiring. And if you’re a family, now is the time to get family portraits. Besides the nice warm weather and the studio gardens looking their best, I also have a great promotion running making it even more affordable. Right now when you call for family portraits, you’ll get a free session at the studio or outside in the studio gardens, and a free 11×14 ($199 value) with any wall print (size 16×20 and up)!

Family portraits are very important, not only to have now, but to have and look back on later in life.

I recently had the opportunity to photograph some relatives of mine. This is my uncle and aunt and their children (my cousins). It’s always extra special and fun to photograph relatives and create something lasting, because it’s for people that I have known my whole life and personally care about. In 20 years, when we all look back at this portrait, it’s nice to know that I was able to create this for them.

I love the close composition of this image, the relaxed feel, the real and wonderful expressions, the beautiful diagonals, and the exquisite lighting. The finished portrait was a 40″ canvas for their home.

We also did a series of 11x14s of the couples and children in b&w to match the decor of the room. We framed them all with black and silver frames, and the results were stunning.

It’s time for a new updated portrait of your family. Give me a call, the studio gardens are lush and beautiful, the weather is great, and I have a new, fantastic promotion running. Call now!! 801-728-3317 to set up a time. And feel free to browse my main website at BryCox.com.

Smooth-Ocean Sunset Scenics in San Diego, California

While doing a wedding in San Diego this last weekend, I arrived a day early as I always do for out-of-town gigs to avoid travel complications. I found some food and then went out to find a great rocky shore on the ocean to create some smooth-ocean sunset scenics. It took some driving, but here are some of my favorites that I created that night.

I knew I had the right spot when I found this sign.

I then took this self-portrait of myself, hiked down the cliffs, set up, and waited for the perfect time to shoot.

While working, I tried to get another self-portrait of myself using a second camera on self-timer on a pole, but a big wave almost got me. It took a few images of me saving my camera.

I really loved the results from that night. Each image is great in its own way. If you’re a photographer, subscribe to my photographer workshop site and see the full story of how I created these, step by step.

And if you’re a family, it’s that time of year again for family portraits! The studio gardens are lush and beautiful, the weather is great, and I have a new, fantastic promotion running through June. Call now!! 801-728-3317 to set up a time.

It’s Time for Beautiful Outdoor Family Portraits at Bry Cox Studio

Warm weather is here, the studio gardens are in bloom, and it is time for creating fantastic and artistic family portrait heirlooms.

Look at this wonderful family portrait. I always like to create a few variations for the big family portrait so that clients can pick the one that matches the feel and mood of their own family. This image was their favorite grouping, a square composition with the children all leaning in close. I love the feel of this. Everyone has a beautiful and natural smile, everyone looks great, and is lit and posed wonderfully.

As another option, I also created a painting of them walking through the studio gardens as well. Images like this are great for hanging in another room.

After the big group, I like to focus on each child and create something unique of each one. I focus on personality and work on getting sparkle in the expression, as well as using custom and exquisite lighting that flatters each person, as well as creating depth and contrast.

The result should be captivating and real. Strangers should be wowed by it and feel like they know the person by the genuine expression, and there should be depth created by the lighting that makes you feel like you can step into the image.

Individual portraits of family members are great for creating wall collages and groupings for other parts of the house. Later, each image can be moved into a child’s room as the groupings in the main rooms are updated.

Decades later, when each child has moved on in life and gone their own ways, each of these images will be invaluable to them as well as other loved ones.

We can even do a mix of portraits in the studio at the same appointment if you’d like a different look.

Your family’s schedule in the summer can be extra busy and it can be hard to get everyone together, but creating these memories is invaluable and now is the best time to get into the studio.

Bry Cox featured in This Month’s Photography Magazine, ‘Rangefinder’

I’m featured in this month’s Rangefinder magazine, a publication that goes to all the professional photographers. This is how the cover looks (which I didn’t shoot).

It was for the big WPPI event in Vegas for which I created this collage below, mentioned in a previous post. I was pushing and hoping this would be the cover, but it didn’t make it for that. However, it was used in the story, positioned on the edge of the page to catch viewers eyes as they flip through the magazine.

Here’s the opening spread. I added little targets on my images (5 of the 8 on this spread).

The bottom left image is a multi-image stitch created by Alain Martinez, one of the other two people on the project with me. He shot me and another of other prominent photographers one by one, and put it all together for this one image.

There are more images of ours in the story, along with a little write-up of the three of us who worked on the project: me, Alain Martinez from Miami, and Henk van Kooten from the Netherlands.

There is a book that will follow, and I’m very excited to see how that comes out. It was a real honor to be asked to work on this as well as to work with Alain and Henk and get to know them better.

On another note, it’s spring time and now is a great time to get a new family portrait. Give me a call at 801-728-3317 to schedule a time. And feel free to browse my main website at BryCox.com.

Photographs for an Interior Design Job in Farmington

A local interior designer named Jenna (JM Design Sparrow) is a great Interior Designer and artist, and she asked me to photograph one of her recent projects in Farmington, particularly the client’s bathroom.

There was a lot of attention to detail and I wanted to make sure that I captured, not only the look of the room, but the feel of it as well. I really liked this necklace holder on the vanity, for instance, and shot this with some purposeful optical blur for a nice abstract look.

This tub is one of the center points of the room, and I wanted to make sure that I showcased it with both panoramas as well as close images.

This panorama below was particularly fun as well as difficult to shoot. It’s hard to shoot a long image like this in tight quarters like a home, while keeping vertical lines and perspectives correct. I love how it turned out.

The entire bathroom was made up of custom and unique pieces of furniture, that all went together very well.

Even the details like the faucet and the lights were special finds and meant a lot to them.

There were some other areas too that were particularly fun areas to design, and she wanted images of these areas as well. These were mainly areas of gathering and relaxation.

Then while finishing up, I photographed the family’s tulips on their kitchen table. I just liked the colors and how they were lit naturally.

If you need some interior design work, Jenna’s the person to talk to. She loves integrating people’s personality and tastes into their own home, and solving the problems of texture, colors and space.

And if you need some great interior images, perhaps for a home your selling or to show off a design job, then give me a call. Hopefully you can see from my work that I am an absolute technician, focusing on the details of lines, balance, exposure, and specific lighting to create a professional and polished image, while at the same time giving you something that is new, creative, and interesting to look at too.

Big Yellow Moon on the Rise

The other night the moon was supposed to be extra big and bright (news story) which won’t happen again for two more decades. I set out to a secluded place near my home and set up my camera on a tripod to wait for the moon rise. It was a fun and cold night. I had just got back from Texas and was used to the warm weather, and the cool spring night here in Utah made for a fun adventure.

I started out shooting the sunset, as there was about a 15 minute difference from when the sun would set and the moon would rise. I shot for HDR which means you shoot a couple exposures to capture the shadow and highlight details and then sandwich the images together in one image, but ended up just using single exposures as my final images as I feel they look much more natural and esthetically pleasing. Here’s a pano looking west to the sunset.

During twilight, I created some long 30 second exposures of the ground and scenery around me. I really love the next two images and the blue in them.

I especially love the direction of light and the high horizon in this one below.

I was using an iPhone app which pointed to where the moon would rise. I waited for it to peak above the clouds and began to shoot. I really like this image. Everything is so blue.

I pulled back for another image, showing more foreground. I could have digitally enhanced and lightened the grass and foreground, but I prefer it like it is, feeling dark and cool like night.

I zoomed in to capture the moon, but by now it was climbing fast.

The higher moon gave me a bit more light to work with, and I took one more with a lot of foreground and a high horizon, hyper-focal focusing to get as much in sharp detail as possible, especially for such a long exposure.

I really like how these turned out, but nevertheless it was just fun to be outside and enjoying the cool night, looking at the moon. I also created a few images on my iPhone just for fun. Here’s when I first arrived…

My camera and the moon while creating the last image above…

Some weeds against the night sky. I shot this while walking back to my vehicle…

And one more of weeds that I sent from my iPhone to my iPad using PhotoStream, then edited on my iPad to create a pseudo painting. I really like the colors in this a lot.

Well, that was my Big Moon Adventure. If you love photography like I do, and you understand the value of a great image that can stand the test of time, then give me a call. Now is a great time to set up your Spring appointment for your family portrait.
