Bry Cox Portrait Paintings from Photographs

Fall weather means family portraits — and also Bry Cox’s family portrait paintings.

When I photograph your family, I can also create a very unique piece of art — a painting. These are actually painted stroke by stroke using the original photograph as a reference so that everything is in proportion. You can save by doing this too as part of the fall special going on now.

Here is a short video of me talking specifically about these paintings…

Remember, my fall special is going on now. All the details are here. Give me a call and let’s create something amazing for you.

Bry's-Fall-Family-Special-2014

Below are some paintings I’ve created for people. These are each finished as a stretched canvas in a variety of sizes, ready for hanging. I am based in Utah and have both an outdoor shooting area here at the studio location, but I also know of great places to go in the canyons and nearby mountains. For example, these first few are on location throughout Utah.

Portraits for 12 Year Old Singing Sensation, Lexi Walker

Lexi Walker‘s YouTube video of her singing “Let it Go” from Frozen has over 50 million views. Being only 12 years old, she has fantastic control of her voice, and she’s getting more and more gigs like singing on TV shows, for various events, and with musicians like Michael Martin Murphy. All of this means that she needed some really cool new portraits for press kits, gigs, and web use.

Cox_LWalker2014-162-color

Years ago I named my studio, “BryCox.com – Celebrity Style Imaging” because of my unique style of focusing on lighting and emotion. I don’t just take pictures of people, I work to create portraits that tell stories. For this shoot, Lexi is a very talented and beautiful girl. I wanted to show professionalism, skill and stage presence, but also show that she is a young 12 year old and fun-loving kid.

Lexi was such a fun girl to shoot. Even though she is young, she is very intelligent and precocious, and was fun to laugh and talk with. The shoot was a blast, and the images really show her personality.

Though I am a Utah based photographer, I do work all over. Besides offering you options here at my studio and in my outdoor gardens, I do a lot of location work in Salt Lake City, throughout Utah, and out of state.

Iconic Conductor Portraits

Did you know that KUTV’s weatherman, Sterling Poulson is a choir conductor? He is the founder and musical director of the Choral Arts Society of Utah, and their next event features a guest conductor from Germany. Sterling called me to photograph Eric Schmidt, the guest conductor for the event for use in posters, programs, and promotional materials. Here are some of the images I did for them.

I know that they needed a very nice but classic, color portrait with a warm brown background.

Cox_ESchmidt-154

I started with that, then decided to have some fun, thinking a really iconic and artistic black & white image would be awesome. The subtitle to the name of my studio is “Celebrity Style Imaging.” I love creating images that tell a story about a person, and this is exactly the right kind of shoot for that. I envisioned some images that showed personality and screamed “artist.” I wanted an image that would be intriguing to a complete stranger, and would say, “This is an artist who is interesting and proficient in his field.”

I decided on a high-contrast black and white look with sharper specular highlights, using a light gray background instead of harsh white. Here are the results.

I really like how these images. I think they are strong, impactful, and yes iconic. To see more about Eric and his upcoming event, visit the CASU website. And if you’d like a portrait for work or business, give me a call at 801-728-3317. I’d love to create something for you.

New Baby Isabelle’s Portraits

I always get excited when someone calls me to photograph their new baby, especially when the baby is brand new. Baby Isabelle came in for her first photo shoot during her first couple weeks, and she was a joy to photograph. She was so expressive and so pretty, that it was hard to pick our top favorites.

This first portrait is definitely a favorite because I love creating images like this, of a mom holding her new baby. However these images are the hardest to create on a first baby shoot. But looking at this image, you’d never know how hard these are to do because this looks stunning and effortless. I love that both are looking at each other and interacting, and the emotion in it is wonderful.

BryCox_Isabelle_01

Next is a trio that captures the essence of everything I want in a newborn’s first photo shoot. It shows how little and cute Isabelle is, how pretty her eyes and expressions are, and how tiny her hands and feet are. It is something that will look gorgeous on the wall and for years to come, will bring joy when the family looks at it. Babies change and grow so fast, that it’s fun to see how tiny and little they once were, and to have some perspective with the loving hands of mom in the image as well.

BryCox_Isabelle_02

I really appreciate the opportunity to meet and photograph baby Isabelle. If you are expecting or would love some new baby portraits that are artistic and beautiful and completely different from everything else out there, then give me a call. I’d love to create something amazing for you. 801-728-3317

Centenarian Portrait, Wilford Zaugg Turns 100

It’s a rare thing to do a portrait of someone that’s 100 years old. And recently I had the honor of doing a centenarian portrait of a long-time neighbor and resident of my town, Wilford Zaugg. He lives around the corner from me and I can remember him always out in his yard or farm, working hard. As a kid I remember my dad bringing home corn and other vegetables grown in his farm and garden, and when my mom put on the town melodrama ages ago, Mr. Zaugg said he had never before acted, but ended up being the star.

Before the shoot, I had a vision of an image that I wanted – a black and white portrait of him outside in his farm wearing his work clothes.

When I arrived for the shoot, he was all dressed up in his suit. I really liked him in his suit, so I started by doing some images in his home in his suit, with him showing off his custom wood pens that he makes. I also wanted some outside using his home as a backdrop, so we stepped outside and did some images in front of his home and a few in the back. At that point he thanked me and assured me that I had enough photos. But I still wanted that one image in my mind so I asked him for one more set created on his farm, but more casual, and maybe with a pitchfork.

He obliged, so with his jacket off and pitchfork in his hand, I got this image, my favorite of the shoot. I’m currently designing up a book for his daughter, and this is the cover.

BryCox-Cover-web

I love this portrait. Being in his church clothes is perfect. To me it tells the story of a long life of a strong ethics of hard work, church, and true happiness – a legacy he has taught by example to his large and growing family.

And below is the full-frame of that same image. The square crop is great for the book cover, but I really like it un-cropped below. I love the long lines of the silo, his stance, and pitchfork, and there is so much story in this image. And I really like him still in his dress clothes but with jacket off. He doesn’t farm anymore, so the dressier clothes are more true to him. Plus the white shirt is the brightest point and it really draws you in.

Plus there is so much character in the smile, the stance, and in the little details of his dress. For instance, you may have to look at the square cropped version above, but his belt skips a loop, and his tie sits just to the side with the smaller end sticking out. The lines of the pitchfork and the lines in the barn work together, and the framing within the silo and barn are so good. This was all created with some mobile lighting that I used to sculpt him while darkening the clouds and sky. I absolutely love the result.

Cox_WZaugg100-186-bw-edge

Mr. Zaugg’s daughter lined up this shoot with me so that we could create some photographs for his invitations, birthday program, as well as for the newspaper, and for the Governor’s office which is also doing something for him. We needed a younger portrait for some of these things so I did this scan of him when he first got married. I think he looks very handsome here.

Zaugg-Scan-of-Wilford

And here are some of the other images from the shoot, both inside his home and out. This one below is of Mr. Zaugg showing me some of the many pens he’s made from wood brought to him from all over the world. And he made these pens with a lathe that he made and kept out in his barn. I think about him making his own lathe, and I am inspired. There is a solid sense of contentment in this earlier generation that is lacking today. It was the sense that you earn the things you get over time, then you made them last, and continued to fix them. And if you couldn’t afford something or couldn’t make it yourself, you did without.

This image also shows off his national award winning deer rack in the background, and his award framed next to it from Boone and Crockett.

Cox_WZaugg100-121Cox_WZaugg100-169

It really has been an honor to photograph him again. I did his 70 year anniversary portraits some years back, and posted them on my blog too. But this project has been extra special. It’s been nice to work on images that I know his family will cherish, and to also hear from his daughter about the legacy of values that he’s left his family of 11 children, 52 grand-children, and 98 great-grand-children.

I hope we can all inspire and make that much of a difference in the lives we live.

And until next time, America.

Janae’s Wedding is Today, See her Pre-Wedding Images

Today is Janae’s wedding here in Utah at the Bountiful LDS temple. She lives out of state and flew in just the other day. So when she arrived we quickly squeezed in a bridal and pre-wedding shoot with her groom, here at the studio. Here are some of the favorites from the shoot.

Cox_JRichey-B-637This image above is their larger image for the wedding display. There is a lot of personality in this portrait and I love the stance, the smile, and the lighting really makes her glow.

And this trio of the couple together is so exciting and romantic. The couple was so good together, that it makes me excited to photograph their wedding. Everything is printed, coated, and framed, and these will be ready for display at the wedding reception. I know the wedding will be beautiful and I’ll post some images from the wedding soon.

Cox_JRichey-8x20-ooo-AnnaMarie

If you are getting married, now is a great time to get in for a bridal shoot or pre-wedding couple portraits. The weather is great and not too hot yet, the studio gardens are in full bloom, and the there is a lot of variety that we can create inside in the studio as well — all in the same location without any travel fees. Fun Spring Portraits of Heather on Location

Photographers love overcast days, because it means they can shoot “naturally,” not doing anything to add or control lighting or even thinking about it sadly. It’s a lazy way to work, and the results are flat and dull images that require layers of “filters” to give them any type of punch or contrast. So for my recent lighting video tutorials for photographers, I photographed Heather on location on an overcast day to share with photographers how to control lighting in any scenario, even on these days with natural dull, overcast light. I like images to pop, to have vibrant colors and have depth in the contrast, but it should be done in the camera and with lighting controlled on the scene.

Interestingly, we where shooting in an area of Salt Lake City that is popular with photographers, and the place was almost over-run with photo shoots everywhere. Photographers were waiting in line to shoot in the same spots, and nowhere did I see anyone controlling their lighting. Every photographer I watched was using the natural dull light of the day, or were using an on-camera flash incorrectly. So it seemed apropos to be doing the exact opposite as everyone else, as part of my master lighting tutorial series.

Heather was such a great model. She moved naturally and gracefully, and had a way of always giving a real expressions throughout the shoot. We had a lot of fun laughing throughout the shoot and it was a blast.

© BryCox.com, Bry Cox

I really like this dress of Heather’s too. The color popped against the low-key colors of the area, plus the retro look was a lot of fun, and she made it look great.

© BryCox.com, Bry Cox

I also really like that in the images, the place looks empty. We had to find the right angles as well as time images in such a way as to avoid getting people in the shots, because really there were people on all sides of us. However, you would never know it from the images. The place looks empty, and Heather’s looks and expressions were never distracted.© BryCox.com, Bry Cox © BryCox.com, Bry Cox

If you know a photographer, send them to my lighting tutorials. And if you’d like some new portraits, spring is ending and warm weather is here. The studio gardens here at my place are in full bloom and now is the best time to get in for some new portraits. Call me at 801-728-3317 and let’s block some time off to shoot you some great images.

Sari’s Wedding Album, Timpanogas LDS Temple

Sari’s album is all finished and I’m so excited for her to see it! Here are some of the album design pages from her book. Each of these images below is a double-page album spread, that is printed without a seam, and mounted and coated in the book. Below these images is a short video explaining how the book looks, and even shows this actual book.

Cox_Sari_05Sari is one of my close, dear friends from years ago, and we had a blast shooting at the temple. It was so fun seeing her get married, and her and her husband make a great couple. The weather that day at the Timpanogos LDS temple was gorgeous, and I love how beautiful she looks in all of her images.

Sari was a joy to photograph. She is beautiful, fun, and very photogenic and her dress was gorgeous. These images are just some of the highlights from the first half of the book at the temple, and second half of the book that covers the reception at her home was beautiful as well. Her yard looked amazing and made for a great backdrop. Here’s one double-page spread from her home.

I created a video today talking about my albums because they are hard to portray on the web, and I used Sari’s book as my first sample. 🙂

Below is Sari’s entire design, set to the music of my sister as a slideshow.

If you are getting married, give me a call and let’s talk about your big day, 801-728-3317. You can also see more wedding album designs on my main website at BryCox.com.

My Painted Portraits are Different and Magical

One of my specialized products are painted portraits. I start by creating a photographic portrait during one of our sessions, and then use that photo as a reference to create a completely different and magical painting for you. The end result is a unique piece of art that is finished as a stretched canvas in almost any size you’d like.

Cox_ARosevear-S-318-tex-painting

Paintings can be of individuals, like this image above that I did a while back for a musician, or like the paintings below of families that I finished for Christmas orders.

Shauna’s Family Portrait Downtown

I’ve had so many great family portraits to create and deliver for Christmas, but here is one of my favorites. I’ll post more shoots after Christmas.

I’ve photographed Shauna and her family many times over the years, and they are all so fun and great to work with. For this shoot we decided to do a different location because she works downtown for KUTV, we thought it would make a great location for her updated family portrait.

Cox_SLake-F-109

I really love this grouping, with everyone leaning in, relaxed and smiling. The framing with the gold door gives the image even more warmth and interest.

Though you can’t tell in the photo, it was actually a very cold, winter night when we created these. Everyone’s jackets are just out of the frame for easy reach between setups. But with the beautiful and warm lighting, relaxed groupings, and happy faces, you’d never know it was that cold. It looks like a nice warm day.

We also did some individuals to create this nice trio for the wall.

Cox_SLake-F-10x24-Trio-Design

I love creating family portraits for people. It’s very fulfilling to create something that has emotional value and that is going to be a cherished art piece on the wall. It’s also fun to photograph the same families over the years and see kids grow and change, and Shauna’s family is extra special.

If it’s time for some updated Christmas portraits for your family, the holiday break is a great time to get in. Families are in town, people are together, and the big rush at the studio is past. Give me a call and let’s get your family together and create for something great for your walls. 801-728-3317

Outdoor Snow Portraits of Lowe Family

Christmas is a great time for creating family portraits because it’s one of the rare times that families are all together. For lots of reasons, snow is really difficult to shoot in, but when done right it makes a great backdrop and can set a mood of warmth and love.

Here is the Lowe family that I photographed during their vacation outside their cabin in the Utah mountains, one of the rare times they were all together because they are a family of traveling world-class musicians (9Lowes.com).

Cox_KLowe-F-116

Being a family of performers, they are also very fun with each other and somehow the idea of a crazy photo came up, so we created this one as well.

Cox_KLowe-F-119

If your family is going to be together for the holidays and you would like me to come create an updated family portrait, then give me a call, 801-728-3317. It could be outside or even inside your home. Call me and we can talk about options.

My Painting of Annie Featured in Meridian Magazine

This week, one of my images was featured in Meridian Magazine. They interviewed my friend Annie Rosevear about her band, “Annie Romance” which she left in order to pursue a music career in LA. Before she moved, she came in to the studio and we created some images for her to use in her promotion, and from that shoot I created this painting, the image featured by Meridian.
