Bry Cox’s Commercial Shoot of Death Valley

I feel honored to have been asked by a large corporation to create some artistic views of Death Valley. I shot for an entire day, starting early before sunrise and going until past dark shooting a variety of locations and places. I was accompanied by the company’s rep who took me to places I never would have been able to go without his unrestricted access to various areas off limits to everyone else.

I created more images than I expected during this full day of commercial landscape shooting, and even shot a number of bonus images – color infrared – which looked amazing and refreshingly interesting, especially in the middle of the day.

We started the morning around 5:30 am creating panoramas before sunrise.

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_001

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_002

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_003

I found out that this was the spot where U2 shot their famous “Joshua Tree” album cover. After getting a number of images, the sun began to rise quite quickly behind us. I really like this image with the tops of the mountains in the distance being lit by the rising sun, and the various layers of color it created.

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_004

And here is that area in full morning sun.

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_005

In some areas there are some beautiful stretches of cracked earth. I liked these as abstract closeups.

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_006

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_007

A lot of the areas required some vigorous hiking. At the end of the day I had logged a number of miles plus some big elevation changes on my watch – much more than expected. And these scenes we passed even as we hiked, were breathtakingly beautiful.

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_008

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_009

Here, from one of my favorite lookouts, you could see a number of various rock formations which created bands of color and variety.

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_010

This was also during the “super bloom” due to an earlier flood which caused a number of flowers to bloom, something very unusual for this area of the country.

And in the more “civilized” areas of Death Valley, there’s some cool structures like this “Twenty-mule team” train, all part of the history of the Twenty-Mule Team Borax cleaner. I learned quite a bit about the history of the area as we drove around and hiked through the desert. It is all so much more interesting to me now, knowing some of the history of the place.

This particular train is surrounded by a fence to keep people from climbing on it, so some creative angles were necessary.

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_016

And shooting it in color infrared also gave me some very unique ways of showcasing this local feature.

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_033

Before shooting the Furnace Creek Resort up close, I wanted to get a long, distance shot of it to show how secluded it is, how tucked away in the middle of the desert it really is.

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_017

Here it is up close. It was built on the site of a natural hot spring, and was famous for being the Hollywood hotspot getaway for celebrities. It’s an oasis in the middle of the hot desert.

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_044

It was a very long day of shooting, but I like to make sure that people get more for their money than they expect. And I was surprised how many locations we were able to shoot and how many images I shot during this full day. It was far more than I expected which was a big bonus to the company. With so many beautiful images, I’m only sharing a small percentage here, and it was hard picking images to showcase. But I am grateful for the experience to shoot this job because I love the outdoors and I love creative photographic challenges, and making beautiful landscapes and images that people will appreciate for many years to come.

If your company needs some great photographs, give me a call. 801-728-3317. I’d love to chat with you about your photographic needs to see how I can help you out.

And until next time America.

Kendra Lowe’s Commercial Portraits & Website

Kendra Lowe has been busy, and we’ve been creating new photos to keep up with all of her projects. She released a song and music video to raise money to fight sex trafficking, she just returned home from a tour of performances in France, Jordan, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia (in just the first part of 2016), and she’s been busy recording and arranging pieces for herself and other prominent musicians.

All of this means that she needs great photographs to send to various groups for printing and promo use as well as updating her website. So we’ve spent some time shooting images images of her performing and on stage plus commercial portraits in the studio.

Here are some of the images I’ve created of her recently. These first images are of her as music director of and while performing with David Archuleta.

BryCox_KendraLowe_01

BryCox_KendraLowe_02

And between shows we created this series of images of her playing keyboards and piano. Stage lighting is always difficult. The lights are never aiming where they should for a great portrait. So I adapted the stage lighting with reflectors and other various means to create the right atmosphere while giving me some great portrait lighting. I really like how these look.

I was happy to be able to use my piano in part of the shoot too. 🙂BryCox_KendraLowe_17

Not too long ago I created her a brand new website because she was being featured all over. She had just finished in one month doing Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, a European Christmas Tour, and events with Mitt Romney, David Archuleta, Lexi Walker, and Lindsey Stirling. All of her free time was gobbled up creating arrangements and orchestrations for a number of groups like the LDS Church. Some of these gigs came as her role as the musical director, arranger, and pianist for Lexi Walker, a 12 year old singing prodigy who I photographed and posted about earlier.

That website is KendraLowe.com and we are in the process of adding even more to it now.

Some people are surprised to hear that I create websites, but I’ve been doing my own websites as well as sites for specific clients since the 1990’s. There are a lot of things I do as a photographer and designer to help my clients with their photographic needs. Most people need photographs for a specific commercial need, and many times I can keep the look and vision of the images throughout the entire entire process, which helps them save time and money. It looks extra professional when original design concepts are followed through from initial photography to final output.

If you are unfamiliar with Kendra, she plays the piano, violin, banjo, she sings, she orchestrates, she really does it all. You have to read her bio on her website. And here are a few more images we created before.

I like websites that are engaging and are photographically and visually impactful. For her opening page, we did a full bleed page that’s responsive and adjusts to the device and computer screen you’re viewing on. I wanted a variety of images, so I pulled photographs from past events too, like this recent event where she played for David Archuleta and Lexi Walker.

Kiley’s Senior Portraits

Before Kiley moved to Hawaii with her family, we did her high school senior pictures here in Utah. And now that school is ending, it’s a great time to share these gorgeous images of this gorgeous girl.

Of every thing I shoot, high school seniors are one of my favorites. I often feel like a big kid and I love working with young people, chatting about their lives, and really creating lots of fun and creative images that tell a story about who they are. And Kiley’s photo shoot was even extra fun. She’s a joy to be around and being a dancer, we wanted to capture that side of her and get a lot of variety, images that really capture who she is right now.

Kiley started off her year going to Davis High here in Davis County, Utah. And before her family moved to Hawaii, we did her senior portraits here at my studio, and I am really excited about how everything turned out. This first image was one of my favorites, and we used it on her graduation announcement cards.

BryCox_Kiley_Senior_02

I love doing fashion lighting on seniors, and from this series of images I also designed a trio. It looked great once it was finished and framed.
BryCox_Kiley_Senior_06And being a dancer, we created some action shots of her dancing in the studio, and I used those to create this collage. She really looks beautiful in every single one of these images, and the entire design really flows and looked great finished.
BryCox_Kiley_Senior_07And of course for high school seniors, I like to do big sessions that include indoor and outdoor setups, plus multiple changes of clothes and backgrounds. One of our favorite outdoor images was this one of her dancing in the road.

BryCox_Kiley_Senior_08
She had a lot of beautiful outfits, and it was hard to pick favorites, but this one really stood out.
BryCox_Kiley_Senior_10

And I love doing 9-up collages for seniors. It’s a great way to show a lot of variety, and here are some of our favorites that made her collage.BryCox_Kiley_Senior_01 And here are some of those closer up.
BryCox_Kiley_Senior_11 BryCox_Kiley_Senior_12 BryCox_Kiley_Senior_14 BryCox_Kiley_Senior_16 BryCox_Kiley_Senior_17 BryCox_Kiley_Senior_19

It was a real pleasure to spend time with Kiley and do these portraits for her. I hope they all made it to Hawaii safely, and that her and her family enjoy these for many years to come.

And if you’re a high school senior and would still like to get some portraits done, I know school is ending for most seniors in Utah right now. And maybe you want some great images still, or perhaps you did a shoot elsewhere and regret them and would like something much better. Whatever the reason, give me a call and let’s get you something great that you and your family will love for a lifetime. Spring has sprung here at the studio and the outdoor gardens look great, plus I’ve been re-vamping the studio gear for even more fashion lighting and options.

Give me a call at 801-728-3317, and until next time, America.

He Is Risen, Sun over Death Valley in Color Infrared for Easter 2016

Being Easter, I wanted to post something and it hit me today what to share. I have been working on this image and many others as part of a big commercial project I did in Death Valley. This image was shot in color infrared, a light spectrum invisible to the human eye. The bright colors are real, they are just not the colors or type of light we see.

So aside from the candy Easter colors, I like this for Easter because the sun is dramatically shining over Death Valley from the horizon as if rising. It says symbolically, “The Son brings light and life to Death.”

BryCox_DeathValley_Mar2016-2702-Pano-1000p

And for a little more Easter spirit, I want to share a video with my little 4-year old nephew narrating it. He was an early reader and last year when my family showed him an Easter video he started reading the captions. My sister and brother-in-law stopped and recorded him and combined his voice with a new version of the video. They did it again this year, and this is it.

And here is last year’s video. More backstory on this in last year’s post.

Plus, here are some photos I did of him in my Utah studio to go with his cute voice.

Happy Easter, everyone. And until next time, America.

Jason’s Acting Portraits

Jason was a great model during his acting shoot. He owns a tech company that he runs during the day, but in his free time, he does acting and needed some cool new photos. This first one was one of my favorites from the shoot.

BryCox_Jason_Acting_1

Being based in Utah, we can easily do a variety of looks, especially right here at the studio. For instance here, we created images inside the studio and outside as well, including this cool one with a motorcycle. BryCox_Jason_Acting_2 BryCox_Jason_Acting_3 BryCox_Jason_Acting_4

These are just some of the many images we created, but I think they show a variety of looks and different sides to his personality, which is something you try to get across in an acting photo.

If you need some cool new photos for your business, give me a call, 801-728-3317.

Alexis’s High School Senior Portraits

It’s the time of year for high school senior portraits, and I love photographing seniors. And that should in these images from Alexis’s shoot. She is a dancer at Davis High, and I love incorporating a senior’s personality into her images. So for Alexis, we did this collage of her in her in her Dance Company clothes to show her love of dance.

And my high-contrast black & whites which I do for fashion shoots are always a hit with seniors, and they also work great in trio designs. Alexis has the most genuine smile in the image above, and the trio set below shows a variety of expressions and tells a mini story. BryCox_Senior_Alexis_02

One of my top-selling products for seniors has been the 9-up square collage. They are great for showing a variety of poses, outfits, and backgrounds, and they look great framed on the wall.

BryCox_Senior_Alexis_03

Right here in my Utah photo studio, we can create a variety of images for a very fun shoot. And my signature art piece portraits are fun to shoot and a bit time-ingestive to create, but they are captivating, especially with thoughtful expressions.

Kayla’s Wedding at the Jordan River LDS Temple in Utah

It’s a great time with couples getting engaged for me to share some weddings. This beautiful wedding at the Jordan River LDS Temple in Utah during the fall is of Kayla and Richard’s beautiful day.

I like to start out album designs with a full, double-page spread of where the couple got married. in this case I did an abstract b&w of the Jordan River Temple before the couple came out.

BryCox_KaylaRichard_SoJordan_001

And here are a few page designs from her finished album, shown as double-page spreads. The idea of the album design is that every double-page spread should be a mini story. I also like the images to be as large as possible for impact when you’re holding the album.

But that’s really hard if each image isn’t crystal clear, which is one reason I believe most photographers don’t produce albums – their images aren’t clean enough to be printed well. That’s a sad thing, because half of the job of photographers should be to produce products that clients can enjoy as physical products, items that can be held in the hands rather than being small phosphorus image on a phone or screen. Digital sharing is handy, but there is something magical about actually holding an album and turning the pages, and having each image large enough that they come to life.BryCox_KaylaRichard_SoJordan_002

We had a beautiful and sunny afternoon to shoot, and you can see how happy the bride and groom are together. I felt honored to be there that day as their wedding photographer.BryCox_KaylaRichard_SoJordan_003 BryCox_KaylaRichard_SoJordan_004 BryCox_KaylaRichard_SoJordan_005

There’s much more to the album, but it’s hard to show albums on a blog. But I do have some short videos that show the books in more detail. Just click on these videos to see them.

RuthAnn’s Wedding at the Salt Lake LDS Temple & Heritage Gardens

It’s that time of year when couples get engaged, so here is another beautiful wedding. This is RuthAnn’s wedding at the Salt Lake City LDS Temple, with her reception at Heritage Gardens in Sandy, Utah.

Here is a slideshow of her album design. It’s best viewed full screen in HD.

And here are a few of the page designs from her book, shown as double-page spreads. I love how beautiful she looks throughout the entire album and how large all of the images are. It makes for a very impactful and emotional design.

BryCox_RuthAnn_SLTemple_001 BryCox_RuthAnn_SLTemple_002

I also love how beautiful and natural the lighting looks, no matter what time of day or night. The sky pops, the couple looks great, and the skin tones are consistent throughout every image. But more than that, there’s happiness and emotion in all of these images. Her wedding album is quite beautiful. BryCox_RuthAnn_SLTemple_003 BryCox_RuthAnn_SLTemple_004 BryCox_RuthAnn_SLTemple_005

It’s hard to show how these images look online, so I have some short videos that show the books in more detail. Just click on these videos to see them.

Bry Cox at Photo Beijing China & Inner Mongolia (Part I)

I just got back from speaking in China at Photo Beijing, 2015 where I was treated like a king. It was such a great experience and I’ve been anxious to share more about this trip. My hosts also asked if I’d be a photographic ambassador and visit Inner Mongolia as well, and I took a lot of great images there of the most interesting faces. I’ll share more about that later. For part 1 of this trip I wanted to start with Photo Beijing 2015.

BryCox_PhotoBeijing2015_China_01

I wrote an article on street photographer Vivian Maier, which is getting compiled with other articles into a book being published later. Because of that article, I was asked to travel to China to speak on Vivian Maier. (I’ve also posted that article online for paying members of my photography training site for it’s insight into posing and reading people’s personalities.)

After speaking on the opening day, they had a big ceremony complete with red carpet where they had me walk while being photographed by a huge crowd of people. While walking amongst the camera clicks and flashes, they had television cameras too from CCTV, and I could even see myself projected on the huge screen in the distance as it cut from camera to camera. The whole thing was quite exhilarating.BryCox_PhotoBeijing2015_China_02 BryCox_PhotoBeijing2015_China_03

I was so excited that I made this iPhone video at the top of the carpet, still on a high from the walk.

They also had these models wearing dresses made of photographs, walk the carpet the opposite direction.BryCox_PhotoBeijing2015_China_04 BryCox_PhotoBeijing2015_China_05

At the top of the carpet, there were welcomes and speeches from government and photographic dignitaries.BryCox_PhotoBeijing2015_China_06 BryCox_PhotoBeijing2015_China_07

And I had to get a photo with me with my friend Bing, who invited me over to China, and who I got to know years ago when I first went to China to speak in 2009. Her father is one of the most well-known photographers in China and was in charge of the event.BryCox_PhotoBeijing2015_China_08

After the red carpet ceremony, we were taken to a television theater and asked to sit on the front row for another opening ceremony event, this time we were entertained by amazing local dancers and singers. Again, this was all filmed by cameras from CCTV, which continually cut to cameras on us. Sometimes, the cameras were awkwardly close to my face, so close I couldn’t see over them to see the dancers.
BryCox_PhotoBeijing2015_China_09 BryCox_PhotoBeijing2015_China_10

All of these images I’m posting were shot with my small Lumix point-and-shoot camera, which I love for it’s manual controls, retro look, and very small size. It was the best camera to take on a trip like this, giving me both control as well as a very small size and weight.BryCox_PhotoBeijing2015_China_11

The next day, me and the other speakers were part of a roundtable discussion. I was the only one from the US, and other countries represented included Bangladesh, Malta, France, Germany, UK, Indonesia, and many others. We all wore headphones with receivers capable of receiving various channels of audio from the translators. It was incredibly interesting to see so many people with so many backgrounds and languages, all connected by photography.BryCox_PhotoBeijing2015_China_12

Somehow when my name was translated from English to Chinese and back into English, it came out as “Bry Cox’s Bio.” So a few times throughout the event I saw my name written this way.
BryCox_PhotoBeijing2015_China_13

I was also given some translators at this event, local college student volunteers that followed me around everywhere and made my life easier.BryCox_PhotoBeijing2015_China_14

When they asked if I’d come speak on photographer Vivian Maier, I had no idea how big of an event it would be. They had beautiful signs like this printed around town inviting the public to an exhibition of original prints shipped from New York.BryCox_PhotoBeijing2015_China_15

And here I am at the exhibition after I was done with my work and meetings, wearing more relaxed clothes. It was an incredible show. They had 50 original images on display, and they had made wall paper based on her negatives. It was all quite beautiful.BryCox_PhotoBeijing2015_China_16

Before this, I had only seen Vivian’s images in books. It was quite an experience to see them up close and in person, looking at real silver halide prints. The detail that close was incredible and the images were even more beautiful and inspiring.
BryCox_PhotoBeijing2015_China_17

Of course in Beijing I went on some photo walks where I did some of my own street portraits that I’ll share in my next post, images like this cute little boy driving his motorized trike through the busy streets of Beijing.BryCox_PhotoBeijing2015_China_18

And later in Mongolia I was presented with custom made traditional clothing in a ceremony which I’ll get to in a later post. And while there, my hosts took me to photograph a Mongolian primary school where kids wrote in calligraphy with giant brushes, to a Buddhist temple at sunrise, and to a local farming village where the residents put on a parade for us. During all of this I created some photos that I’m really excited about, and I’ll share them in the next posts.BryCox_PhotoBeijing2015_China_19

So until next time, America.

Braden & Miranda’s Early Wedding Sneak Peek St. George Utah Temple

Braden and Miranda were married last weekend in the St. George Utah LDS temple, and they had me there to create some wonderful and romantic images for them. I love shooting wedding couples. I like the happiness, the romance, and the wonderful feelings at weddings, and I really like capturing that feeling in photographs that couples will keep for decades.

This particular morning was quiet and serene, and shooting earlier in the day also helped us beat the 100º desert heat that came later in the day. I’ve loved sorting through these portraits and wanted to share a few early favorites of mine in this sneak peek.

BryCox_BradyWedding_01 BryCox_BradyWedding_02

I created a mix of color and black and white, full-lengths, close-ups, as well as images with both a classic and modern appeal. I especially like this emotional set built as a trio.

BryCox_BradyWedding_03

The St. George Utah temple is set in a desert climate, and the stark white building with the direct desert sun makes for a great contrast against the blue sky. It’s a wonderful background for these romantic couple portraits.

If you’re getting married, give me a call at 801-728-3317. I’d love to create something artistic and romantic for you.

Photographs are the one thing we spend money on from a wedding that lasts. They are enjoyed by us, our children and future generations. Avoid the regrets of cheaper options and let me create something powerful and beautiful for you on your special day. I have price options ranging from partial coverage with an emphasis on romantic images to full-day coverage with multiple locations where I follow you throughout your day and tell your story in magnificent custom books. No matter your level, you’ll know you have images that you love now and for years to come.

Mayzee’s One-Year Old Portraits

One of the fun things about being a professional portrait photographer for so many years is being able to see my clients grow and change. Many times I’ll photograph families, then the children’s engagements and weddings, then maternity, then baby portraits, then kids and new family portraits. It’s rewarding to see people come in again and again and see how they change and grow over time. It makes many of my clients feel more like family than customers as I’m a part of some of the big moments in their lives.

This particular family portrait has been a favorite of mine and has been a sample canvas on my wall for years. I’ve done a lot of portraits for them over the years and now the second to youngest son (two in from the left side) who is a young man in this family portrait, is much older and married. His wife recently called me.

BryCox_Mayzee_09

They have a beautiful sweet baby that just turned one years old. Her name is Mayzee and she came in for her one-year-old portraits.

She was a joy to photograph and warmed up to me really quickly. She would smile and laugh at me, and was cheerful throughout the entire shoot. Her personality had me laughing most of the time too, and she really responded well to all of my antics.
BryCox_Mayzee_01

Here is a wall collage using a b&w family portrait in the middle and two smaller wall images on the sides.

BryCox_Mayzee_10

And here are those images bigger.

BryCox_Mayzee_02 BryCox_Mayzee_03 BryCox_Mayzee_07

With her cute clothes and happy personality, we were able to do a variety of backgrounds and options. But no matter what prop I’d bring out to keep her in place and steady on her feet, she really loved my little blue chair the most. She’d push it around like a lawn mower, would sit in it, spin and turn in it, and if I brought out something else, she’d go get the chair and bring it back into the shoot.

BryCox_Mayzee_04

© BryCox.com, Bry Cox

BryCox_Mayzee_05

For this outfit and background I tried my little leather ottoman, but she quickly pushed it away and brought back the chair, as you can see in this trio design below. Another thing to note is that these photographs in these collages below have had zero retouching and no effects.

My specialty is exquisite lighting and emotion. That means that even before images are retouched that they should have the creative side of great expressions and personality, as well as the technical side of perfect skin tones, smooth skin, and sparkly eyes that pop. I don’t fake those things with software effects, filters, or painting afterwards. And the results are images with more emotional impact that I think people can see whether they’re trained in portrait photography or not.

BryCox_Mayzee_06

I really love this shoot and I’m excited to share it with you. There were so many favorites and such a variety of this little girl.
BryCox_Mayzee_08

If you would like some baby portraits that capture personality with a focus on emotion and exquisite lighting, then give me a call. 801-728-3317. Let’s talk about how easy a baby portrait shoot really can go.

Until next time, America.

Band Portraits for Ryan Shupe & the RubberBand

This week Ryan Shupe & the RubberBand put on a show outside of Salt Lake City, Utah, and we used the opportunity to shoot some new band portraits. These kinds of images are used for posters, marketing, web sites, and overall band promotion.

Band portraits need to be iconic, visually interesting, they need to show the vibe of the band so that you know what a live show will be like. Band portraits need to show personality, they can’t be mundane or normal. So all of that means that band portraits are no different than any other portrait I create for people – they need to have exquisite lighting and emotion.

For this image, I envisioned the band on stage with Ryan up front looking right into the camera. I wanted instruments showing and also all the feel of the stage with the stage lights and smoke – except it’s not possible to do a shot like that during the show with an amphitheater full of people. It had to be shot during the day before the show. So I set it up, lit the scene, and shot it knowing I’d be recreating from scratch the entire “feel” of the stage later in post production.

Above is the final version after all the digital work. And below, is an animation of my progress. In the animation it may come together in just a few seconds, but it didn’t take seconds to make.

Notice how in the first and completely raw shot, the skin tones and lighting on the individuals is perfect, but it’s in the middle of the day. It doesn’t look like night and there are no stage lights. From there I slowly build it up, painting in from scratch the stage lights, the atmosphere, the smoke, as well as the effects of the colored lights on Ryan, his jacket, on the band, and on the walls. I’m constantly asking myself, how would this light affect the scene? Where would it be visible? Because of where Ryan is standing, he is being lit with the most diverse set of colored lights from various places. How those lights all skim across his black leather jacket have all been painted in.

The result is something both real and natural to the eye, but also is a shot that could not have been created otherwise. It’s an impactful image.

This second band portrait was created to look real and natural, to be impactful, and to also show the energy of the group. But it wasn’t originally shot like this either.

To create it, I individually lit and shot each band member separately. I then took the best of each individual and put this together, lining up each brick and line in the background to match the bending perspective shift created by my camera’s angle and lens choice. I really liked the wide angle feel and the bending of the bricks created by that. There was a lot of very small and detailed painting needed to get all of these image to seamlessly blend together, and for shadows to fall where they should, and for the creation of shadows and mixing shadows. But the end result is a really cool and iconic band picture.

Here it is in color too before the final conversion to black and white. This color image could work for a lot of purposes when color is required, though in the black and white I did multi-tone it so that it grabs the eye even in b&w.

I was also hired to shoot some concert images during the show later, and I’ll get to posting them soon too. But for as much time as these took to create, I wanted to post today about these these band photos and what really goes into sometimes just one or two commercial images.

There are lots of commercial needs for great photos, some that require almost no Photoshop and post-production and some (like these) that require a lot. My specialty is lighting and emotion and I’m on the Adobe software team training photographers all over the country on advanced clean and natural Photoshop techniques. So for all your commercial imaging needs, give me a call at 801-728-3317. Tell me what business you’re in and what you’d like and let’s make it happen. Let’s create some iconic images for your business that make you shine.

And until next time, America.
