Billy & Kim’s Destination Jewish Wedding in Scottsdale, Arizona

Earlier I shared a few sneak peek images from Billy & Kim’s destination Jewish wedding in Scottsdale, Arizona held at sunset on top of the Valley Ho Hotel. Well here is their entire wedding album. This video shows the outside cover, display box, and every page of the book.

Early Sneak Peak of Kim & Billy’s Jewish Wedding at the Valley Ho in Scottsdale, Arizona

Last week I had the honor of flying down to Scottsdale, Arizona to photography Kim and Billy’s wedding. It was a Jewish wedding at sunset on the roof of this very cool mid-century hotel, called Valley Ho. When you walk into the hotel’s front doors, you immediately feel like you’re on a set for Mad Men. The attention to detail is wonderful, so for the opening image, I decided to give this a retro film look – no filter however. I created this look from scratch.

Before the ceremony we did a ‘first sight,’ where the groom sees the bride in her dress for the first time. I love his reaction. It’s perfect.

While shooting some couple portraits, the wedding party watched from the top balcony and waved at us.

Billy’s side of the family is Jewish and Kim’s family is LDS. I thought the Rabbi did a wonderful job. The ceremony was held on the roof of the hotel as the sun set in the distance.

Immediately following the ceremony I stopped the couple for some beautiful images as the sun quickly disappeared.

There is so much more to show so once the album is designed, I’ll have to share it as well. But for now, I hope these two are having a wonderful first week of marriage. Congrats, you two!

Rava’s Sunset Cruise Portraits

While on my Caribbean cruise, I found myself imagining photo shoots on the boat. I was spotting areas that would be perfect for a shoot, especially with the rails and sunsets. I asked a friend of mine Rava, who owns a dress company specializing in very unique dresses from Tahiti to pose for me. Here’s what we created.

I had a very limited amount of gear with me, but it was enough to create the custom lighting I needed to both sculpt her as well as bring out the awesome skies in the background. I really love how these turned out.

She was a great model and the shoot was a fun break to get away from the crowd on the boat and be creative. I find it interesting that sometimes I need to get away from the studio and relax, and other times I need to get away from relaxing and shoot something and be creative. This trip was a mix of both. I didn’t have internet or phone service for that week, which meant being completely off the grid: no email, no voicemail, no Facebook, no news. It was odd at first but also very relaxing. But I also went hoping to create beautiful images of places I had never been. It’s fun to shoot abstracts and scenics, but I also love faces. You’ll notice in my previous post of art images from the Caribbean, faces I met along the way. But it is also fun for me to create portraits with my Master style of custom lighting using an exotic location as a background.

Well there are some of my favorites from the shoot. And it’s good to be home too and working hard again in the studio. I’m sure there’s a reason you need some new portraits, and this month is a great time to get in the studio. Give me a call and let’s create something awesome for you. 801-728-3317

Melina’s Bridals and Pre-Wedding Portraits

I had the pleasure this week to create these images of Melina for her upcoming wedding. The session was a lot of fun, and we got some incredible images. This first one is one of my favorites. I really love her profile and expression in this, and how the light shapes and sets of her dress.

And in the same set, a relaxed and beautiful smile.

While shooting in b&w, I also created this detail series of Melina’s dress.

We did a series of images in the studio and outside in the studio gardens for variety, including full-lengths, mid-lengths, close-ups, and couple portraits, and with a variety of backgrounds. One of my favorite sets was on the fashion gray. I finished these with some of my custom edges.

We mixed the bridal session with a Pre-Wedding session to include some images of the groom. These two were great together and were very photogenic.

This series is great, particularly because of Melina’s genuine expressions.

And some of just the groom alone.And here is one of my favorites from outside in the studio gardens. Their expressions are perfect, the leaning and relaxed pose is wonderful, and the background looks so good. Right now the outdoor studio gardens are green and looking great. It is a great time to book and shoot outside.

This was such a fun shoot and this couple was a joy to work with. I really hope that they have a great wedding and a wonderful future together.

Sophie and Jeff’s Wedding Album & Show, Draper Temple in the Fall

Sophie and Jeff had a beautiful wedding, and it is now up on my website. They got married in the Draper LDS temple and had their reception at the Garden Place at Heritage Park in Salt Lake City during the fall.

I’ve created this show for their DVD, which includes some of the best images set to music.

Their wedding was one of my favorites. The love between these two was very apparent, and their family and friends all showed their excitement for the marriage of these two. The strong emotions on that day made for a great set of images that made it hard to narrow down in creating their heirloom album design. On top of that, the couple was very attractive and the locations and weather were all wonderful.

Ashley’s Bridal Images

Ashley just did a fun mix of studio bridal portraits, including color and b&w, classic and edgy, close-ups and full length. Here are some of our favorites.

We did some in my white “lipstick” chair on a dark background to draw attention to Ashley’s white dress, and we situated her in such a way to really show off her fun shoes. This also shows one of the variations in how she may or may not wear her veil.

Next, is one of my favorites from the high-key, light-on-light set up. I used a fashion style of lighting to really make her eyes pop, and along with her great expression, fun veil, and Edgy-Edge finish, this image really sings. I think it’s probably my favorite from the entire shoot. It’s really a killer print up close. Cox_AJones-B-565-edge

And of course no bridal session is complete without a beautiful classic full-length. For this one we used very directional lighting for more extreme shadows to create more drama in the image. This really shows her entire dress and will be an image that she loves for years to come. Cox_AJones-B-576

I also created these collages, the first showing some of my favorites from the high-key fashion set up…

…and the second collage designed as a square to show off all of the various details, from her jewelry to her veil to her dress. I love creating these collages because they can show various images, moods, and textures all in one framed wall piece. And this particular design really shows a lot of personality I think.

Tashina’s Wonderful Bridal Portraits (On Location & Studio)

I had the privilege of photographing Tashina for her bridal portraits. She is having an out-of-town wedding, so having great bridals were extra important and special to her. Because of that we did a split session, creating images both in the studio and on location to create a variety of looks for her.

Here is one of her wall prints from her collection, created at one of my favorite locations.

And here is another from that same area. Notice the lighting and shadows on her, complimenting her and creating real depth, the simple and confident pose, the dramatic colors of the vegetation, and the soft gray-blue sky.

Lighting should never be haphazard, and images should never seem flat. Instead, lighting should be specific and used to create depth. Between that and the right expression, an emotion should be created so that you should feel like you can step into the image. It should draw you in.

And that’s true even if an image is candid or in motion. I love her smile in this one as she runs through the field.

Back at the studio, we created this trio of her in her birdcage veil, black and white with a vintage style of lighting as tight head shots.

Then we created some stunning images on my fashion gray background.

I used a custom fashion light set-up for a high contrast look, and completed that set of images as a trio.

And we also shot on one of my favorite brown backgrounds for a nice warm look which also was used to highlight her fun boots.

It was really great working with Tashina and I wish her and her new husband well.
