China Update #6 – Awards Ceremony

…That night we were treated to an amazing awards ceremony and party.  The awards ceremony was for the best of the best images from the international exhibition, of which 25,000 photographers entered from all over the world.  From those final images chosen for exhibition, some images where chosen for Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals.

I WON THE GOLD!  It was very fun to actually be there to receive the award!  Even though I was there in China to speak at the convention, I didn’t expect to win any awards with so many photographers entering.  It was so exciting to have them call me up as the Gold Medalist too!

When I went up to get the award, I handed my camera to Doug Box and asked him to take a photo of me winning.  After the shot, I took my camera back and took this quick pano of the audience photographing me!  Look at all the people grouped up on the sides!

But before they started giving awards, they event started with beautiful Chinese models coming out wearing some of the top images from the exhibition.  They were strutting to music with a heavy beat.  The lighting, fog, and bubbles made it look amazing.

Afterward some of the models asked for a photograph with me.  It probably didn’t hurt that I’d just won the Gold Medal in front of them, or that they were wearing some of my images, or that the place was decorated with my images…but I have to tell you that I loved the attention and felt like a rock star!  They were beautiful and stunning women who were amazingly tall.  Notice how tall they are compared to me.  I’m 6 foot 4 — especially tall for China.

Then before dinner that night the models changed outfits and came back out to do another dance.  I loved this one too!

This dinner felt like another awards ceremony because we were all presented with gifts from the Chinese.  Here is Dennis Craft and I getting some traditional cut-out art pieces.

That night was fantastic!  It made me feel very grateful and blessed to do what I do — to be an artist and to be able to travel and meet so many people from all over the world.  It was a joy to be able to speak and share my artistic ideas with the Chinese photographers.  They were incredibly hospitable and kind.  I hope to get back over there again soon!

China Update #5 – Speaking at PPA Asia 2009

It was a real honor to be asked to speak at PPA Asia.  Someone in our group pointed out that not only was I speaking at the first PPA Asia, but I was the first speaker at the first PPA Asia!  That made me feel really good.  It was such a great group in attendance, and I was able to meet some fantastic photographers over there and see some really amazing photographs.

So the first day, I started things off by speaking in the largest room, giving my creativity program.  I revised it many times over to make it more applicable to the Chinese culture, and making it more visual as well so that it would translate well.  It was received very well, and afterward I was mobbed by attention from people asking for autographs and photos with me.

Cox - Speaking at PPA China 1
Cox – Speaking at PPA China 1

The second day I started out speaking again in a smaller room doing a variation of my creativity program, but with more specific posing and lighting ideas for single individuals.  This too was met with me getting a bunch of attention afterward.

Cox - Speaking at PPA China 2
Cox – Speaking at PPA China 2

I have to admit, it was really fun to be treated like such a rock star!  A crowd would gather for pictures and autographs and would last for about an hour each time I spoke.  We would have to break it up so that we could get out of the way for the next presentation.

As you can see too, I got a lot of use out of my new Chinese tailored suits!  This black one is my third suit I had made out there.  They all fit so nice, I kind of wish I had gotten even more, except I just don’t need any more suits!  🙂

Cox - Speaking at PPA China 3

Then that afternoon, I spoke again in the large conference room and did a presentation on portrait lighting and posing for a more fashion approach.  It seemed that everyone’s favorite part was when I did live posing on stage using photographers in the audience as models.  They really loved it!

Cox - Speaking at PPA China 4
Cox – Speaking at PPA China 4

Everything I did was translated by a live interpreter.  I had to pause every two to three sentences to allow interpretation.  I found that I had to make shorter and more precise statements, and really had to get used to the flow of speaking in such a way with long pauses.  I also had to use simpler words and try hard to not use deep photography jargon that the interpreter might not know.  It was a real adventure and I made quick friends with my incredible and gifted interpreter, Kevin.

Here’s a photo of me sitting for a minute to start a slideshow, and my interpreter standing near by.  He was a great guy and was really fun to hang out with.

In the next post I’ll talk about the awards ceremony and the fantastic party that was held later that night.

China Update #4 – Jinan 2 – Opening Ceremonies

Early the next morning I set out to photograph and document the convention center before people started to arrive, because this is the first PPA convention in China, and the very first PhotoAsia — four years in the making!

Here is the place all ready for people to arrive!

I walked out to the main gate to photograph the guard…

By that time people started arriving and as I tried to get this image of me in front of the convention center.

I had only a short 3 minute walk back to the hotel, but I got stuck in this location for about 45 minutes because someone recognized me and wanted a photo with me.  That got other people’s attention and within moments I was mobbed by people on all sides wanting to photograph me  and wanting me to sign their shirts.  I have to admit, this really made me feel awesome!  This is just one quick shot of the crowd at the end as I was trying to leave and get to the opening ceremonies.  There were still people wanting photos with me, but I didn’t want to be late to the ceremony of which I was apart!

We had a quick welcome meeting with the VIP’s in a smaller room where flowers were pinned on us by Chinese women in traditional dress.  These women then escorted us to the main hall, the location of the opening ceremonies.  This photo is coming down the escalator towards the main hall.  The women in the red traditional dresses are our escorts.

The opening ceremonies opened up the print exhibit.  This is just half of the exhibit, and only the accepted prints.  If I remember right, there were entries from over 25,000 photographers from around the world, and I won a Gold Medal!  I’ll talk more on this when I talk about the awards ceremony in a later post.

And I loved it when these women came up and asked to pose for a photo with me, so I made sure I got one with my camera too.  🙂

And I loved this moment when the beautiful editor of PhotoWorld Magazine came up and asked for a photo with me.  She later did a one-on-one interview too for her magazine.  That was one of the highlights of the trip.  She gave me a copy of a past issue and the cover photo was incredible!  It is a fabulous and beautiful magazine and I felt honored to be asked to be in it.

After the opening ceremonies, I had time for a quick and fast lunch before going off to speak — the first speaker at the first PhotoAsia.  I’ll have more on that in the next post!

China Update #3 – Jinan 1

After flying into Jinan, we had a bus waiting to take us to the convention center and hotel.  The bus driver took us on the long and scenic route to the hotel because I’m guessing he was proud of his town and wanted us to see it.  When we arrived at the hotel, we had plenty of people there to greet us, including our individual interpreters.

After eating, David Trust (the CEO of the PPA), Ron Nichols (the President of the PPA) and I went to be interviewed by the media.  There was a room full of people from newspapers, magazines, radio and TV — all asking us questions through an interpreter.  It was very fun to be apart of the media interviews and to be addressed as “the Master Photographer from America!”

Afterward, the people from the press wanted to be photographed with us.  Here is one photo with someone from a magaizne (below).

That night we had a formal dinner with the Governor of the region.  The sign behind me reads “Welcome party for friends from far.”  At the head table beneath the sign is Ron Nichols (PPA President) eating with the Governor.

It was very fun to attend such an event and I was excited to wear one of my new suits too!  This is the first suit, a pin striped suit.  I’m also wearing one of my custom shirts too — a polka-dot white shirt.  The medals around my neck are my photographic credentials (Master / Craftsman) that are supposed to be worn at photographic events.

Cox - Jinan 6

The dinner was really good and we were fed some very interesting foods, many of which I had never seen before.  My interpreter told me that many of the foods we were given were specialties and are rarely served except at special events.  He told me that it was a real honor to be given such delicacies.  I’m an adventurous eater but had never seen some of the sea urchins and creatures that they had prepared for us.  I ate them all and was very pleased!

After dinner, we were rushed off to see an acrobatic opera in downtown Jinan.  Our host had made arrangements for us and it was absolutely spectacular!

These performers were incredible!  The colors and costumes were amazing, and they did the most amazing stunts!

It was a great first day in Jinan and I felt very pampered and welcomed by my Chinese hosts!  I went to bed excited for the next day!

China Update #2 – Flight & Shanghai

Ahhh! I’m back in America! I arrived yesterday morning (the 4th of July) and am so excited to be back in a free country again where simply accessing and reading a blog is allowed! The first thing I did when I arrived, before even bringing in my luggage, was to hang up my American Flag on my front porch.

So now I can finally talk about my trip. I was unable to access my blog while in China, and have a lot of catching up to do. On the flight over, we were told stories about people being taken from flights and quarantined for having a fever or being near someone with a fever. When we landed, we were not allowed to get up out of our seats, but had to wait and be “screened” for the swine flu. Now there have only been 13 deaths in the US from the new swine flu, and there have been 13,000 deaths during the same time period from the regular flu. Nevertheless, I think this is a front of the Chinese government to make a good face to the Chinese people.

So as soon as we landed, the plane was boarded by a crew dressed in what looks like hazmat gear.  We all had to sit and wait until they took everyone’s temperature with a gun that they’d shine on your forehead (pictured below).  I took these images with my iPhone.

Chinese Hazmat 2
Chinese Hazmat 2

It turned out that a member of our photographic group (Sandy “Sam” Puc of Colorado) that was on another plane was taken and quarantined, not for having a fever, but for being within a certain amount of rows of someone that had a fever.  After leaving the plane, guards came to her hotel and took her and her kids to an old abandoned hotel in China and kept prisoner there under guard for seven days.  This hotel had brown water, mice, no beds, and they were given little to no food or toilet paper.  They weren’t allowed outside contact and couldn’t receive food or anything else from the outside.  A horrible situation to say the least.  We were so grateful when she could finally rejoin us.

Cox - Shanghai Old Town

After landing in Shanghai, David Trust, the CEO of the PPA (Professional Photographers of America) took me to see his tailor.  I had been awake and flying for over 24 hours, but was so excited to meet his tailor and get a suit made.  We wanted to get an early start on the suit so that it could be done before we left Shanghai so that I could have it to speak in later that week.

I had a hard time narrowing down what material I liked and ended up getting THREE suits!  It was so much fun!  I also had four custom dress shirts made too and all of it was ready for me the next day before we left Shanghai!  After being measured for a suit, we went to eat and then headed back to the hotel to get caught up on some sleep.

This is the hotel greeter, Stephanie, that says hi when you arrive (above) and here is a pano image of my hotel room below.  This place was way hip and totally loaded with amenities  There was even hidden jacks at the desk were I could plug my laptop into the TV and watch movies from my laptop on the large screen.  There is also a large window on the far right of this image that opens up into the very cool bathroom.

The next day we hung out in Shanghai and later that afternoon did a little shopping.  I was looking for interesting colors, textures and faces, and here are some of the images I created that day.

I was amazed at the poverty that was everywhere, even a stone’s throw from our fabulous and clean hotel.  People were making, cooking, selling and eating food in some very dirty situations, right on the street!

And as you can see from this image below, people were living in very cramped situations.

I also took some very fun and very fast cab rides that were sooo cool!  I’ve always wanted to drive the way these guys drove!  Man!  Just like a video game!

The next morning we caught a Chinese domestic flight from Shanghai to Jinan, the place of the PPA PhotoAsia conference.  I’ll put more on that in the next post…..

China Update #1

Yes, I am here in China! I was the first speaker here at PPA Photo Asia, and someone pointed out that I am the first speaker at the first ever PPA Photo Asia! I feel it a great honor to be here and do such a great work.

I have many amazing photographs and info to post, but access to my blog is limited here for some reason — it seems to be blocked along with many other websites. In fact, I’m only able to add some text here using a URL cloaking site (many of which are blocked as well). Using a cloaking site has taken away the functionality of the blog and I am not as of yet able to upload photographs.

However, I speak again all day today and start in a just a little bit. So I will try and post some photos very soon.

I’m Speaking in CHINA!

Yes, that’s right!  I’ve been keeping it under wraps, but I’ve been asked to speak at the big portrait conference in China, Photo Asia 2009!  It is coming up and I leave next week!  I’m so honored and excited to be asked to go and look forward to the adventures I’ll be having very soon in this foreign land.

I’ve been preparing for some time, and my program has been updated to reflect the differences in culture, language, as well as allowing for translation (someone will be translating what I say as I speak).  It’s been quite an effort to get the program ready and I really hope that the attendees love what I’ve prepared.

Photo Asia 2009 Poster
Photo Asia 2009 Poster

Now as the day is almost here for me to leave and fly to China, I’m getting antsy!  I have so many things I want to do while I’m there, not to mention how excited I am to go to a place that is completely different.  With as much traveling as I do, not too many places actually seem all that different from the next.  And most foreign countries have a language that I can at least sound out or at the very least I can see a word on a sign and look it up in a dictionary to see what it says.

However, China is completely foreign to me and that gets me excited.  Today I bought a travel phrase book to help me say things like “hello” and “thank you,” and also found and downloaded some iPhone apps where I can trace Chinese words and it will tell me what they say.  I figure these things are needed just for me being able to get around, but also I’ve found that when I travel, that people are very kind and helpful if you can at least say “hello” and “thank you” in their language.

I’ll put more up here while I’m there (depending on the internet connection I can find), but here’s some news releases on some Chinese news sites announcing the event and exhibition:

• News.Cultural-China.com

Well, I’ll keep you all posted.  Stay tuned, America!  🙂

Being Painted by Jeremy Sutton

Last week when I was teaching at the photographic workshop in New England (see my last blog entry), I had the honor of meeting painter Jeremy Sutton (JeremySutton.com).  He too was there to teach a course at the workshop, but his was on painting.

As both of us were instructors, we arrived a day early to get set up and have dinner together and with the other instructors and the NEIPP staff.  I had never met him before, but knew his name and had seen some of his DVDs years ago.  I was excited to finally meet him.

As we talked, we were both excited about the fact that we both had the same fresh approach and philosophies to creativity.  Though we use different mediums and have different terminology to explain it, it was fun to find that they were so similar.

I’ve dubbed my creative philosophy and style, “Jazz Photography,”  based on me being a jazz musician before becoming a photographer, and using the same approaches from playing jazz to creating photographs — that is having a high technical background but being able to block the technical thinking, allowing that part to function perfunctorily in the background in order to really be able to improv and be creative.

Jeremy, being a painter with a strong technical background, uses a similar approach, pulling on his love of jazz music and his background of swing dancing, relating it all to his individual brushstrokes.  He even listens to jazz and talks about dancing as he paints.

BryCox - Sutton painting 1
BryCox - Sutton painting 1

Jeremy had an idea of combining our groups one night for about 30 minutes in order to talk about the similarities of our creative processes despite the differences in mediums.  He decided that doing a live portrait would work best for this, and I was honored to have him chose me to paint. This image above is Jeremy painting me live.

BryCox - Sutton painting 2
BryCox - Sutton painting 2

It was quite an experience to be painted live.  As you can see from this image above, he lit me with some consistent and directional light (the lamp) and is working digitally with a digital pad and pen (called a Cintique’, $2000) that is pressure and directionally sensitive. His work can be seen on the projector behind us.

BryCox - Sutton painting 3
BryCox - Sutton painting 3

He worked very abstractly, laying down colors and shapes that didn’t look like me or a person at all, but instead were swirls of color and shape, both positive and negative.  The entire process only took 20 minutes, and near the end it began to come together where we could all see the face emerge from the abstract.

I am extremely pleased with the painting.  Here is the final result:

BryCox - Sutton final canvas
BryCox - Sutton final canvas

I absolutely love this!  As an artist, I find it incredibly interesting and very artistic.  I love the use of color, the shapes, and the loose feeling of the brushstrokes as well.  This was not created from a photo reference, but live, right in front of me.  It was an incredible gift!

Being a musician, I love to write and record in my free time.  This to me looks like an album cover for a future CD!  I think I have a new project on my hands.  🙂

As my current clients know, I’ve offered painted portraits on canvas for many years using a portrait I create as a reference.  Some of these can be seen in past entries on this blog (here is one example, or type “painting” into the search bar near the top of my blog to see more examples from the past).

However, I am hoping to learn and incorporate more of Jeremy’s style and techniques into my work to be an even better painter artist.  I’m excited for what that will bring to my work.

Thank you Jeremy!

Until next time, America!

New England Photographic Workshop

I just got back from teaching a photographic workshop called NEIPP in New England.  I had a great time and the group was wonderful.  The location was beautiful too, located on Cape Cod in the town of Hyannis (on the ocean below Boston).

This was my view, looking out each morning from my hotel room balcony.

I never really blog about my workshops except to say that I’m going or just got back from one.  But on this occasion, the photographer who worked as my assistant photographed me in action, so now I have something to show all of you.

Many of the workshops I teach are only one day events, but this was one of the full weeklong workshops that I teach all over the country.  I love doing these multi-day workshops because I have the time to fully go through my entire workflow.  I talk about creativity, lighting and posing people correctly for their face and body shapes.  I demonstrate real shoots of real people (like this image below),…

…and then we work on those images from beginning to end, as I demonstrate my Photoshop techniques and digital workflow.

And here are two of my models, Kristen & Jocelyn, who were sisters.  I love this composite!  It was very cold outside and windy and this was a creative exercise to demonstrate how to take something that’s negative about a shoot (in this case the cold and the wind) and use it as a positive to create something wonderful and magical.

BryCox - Sisters Kristen & Jocelyn

At the very last night, we had a big formal dinner with all of the instructors and all of the photographers in attendance.  At the end of the dinner each group roasted their instructor in front of everyone.

My group roasted me by acting out their wildly exaggerated impression of me in a photo shoot.  It was pretty funny and I have to say that it was pretty dead on too.  I was speechless!  A fun night!

I really liked the people at NEIPP.  It was a great group and I feel it an honor to have been asked to go teach there.  I made some new photographer friends too which is always fun, because the more I travel, the more I run into photographer friends from all over.

If anyone reading this is a photographer and would like to attend one of my workshops, check out my workshop site for more info.

Until next time, America!

Phoenix & PPA Convention 2009

I just flew back from Phoenix and am glad to be home.  I love flying and traveling because I tend to be more introspective than usual, being away from my daily routine.  But now I’m home, and glad to be able to work again and get stuff done.

My trip started out a few days early by seeing my friend Collin and doing some work for him.  He is an amazing cosmetic dentist and I do a lot of the ‘after’ portraits for him after he fixes someone’s teeth.  I started off by photographing his staff, his office and then doing some fashion images for his upcoming brochure.

The next day I photographed his family and his little kids at their Ahwatukee home.  He has such a beautiful family and has adorable and cute little kids.  It had been two years since I’d last photographed them, so the kids had forgotten me.  It was fun to win them over, all over again.

I haven’t made my studio picks yet, but here’s a sample of images from the family session.

PPA
After seeing Collin for a few days, I headed off to the national photography convention for the next few days, called the PPA convention.

9000 photographers from all over the country as well as many other countries were in attendance.  This is where photographers go to see the newest and greatest changes in the industry.  Last year I spoke at PPA, and this year I received a free pass because of an award that I’d won.  I also received a second award that I’m very proud of: a ‘Loan’ for my image of Joe McQueen.  The Loan Print is the highest award a photographer can win, and the image will now go in the PPA Loan Book art book.

Last PPA I released my second book for photographers and this year I received a great compliment from a great photographer, Clay Blackmore, an industry legend.

While passing in a hall, he said, “Bry, your book is the best book on photography I’ve ever read.”  I asked if he wouldn’t mind writing me a testimonial and he said, “That’s your testimonial.  Write that down…the best book on photography I’ve ever read!”  That really made my day to say the least.

I also love seeing all my photographer friends from all over the country. I should have taken more photos with everyone, but here are a few from the last couple days.  A quick note: photographers where their credentials around their neck at events like this.  It’s a way to quickly tell what rank everyone is.

If any photographers see this, I want you to know that it was great seeing you all.  Seeing my friends at these events is what really makes these gigs fun for me.  Take care and I’ll see you all at the next event.

Until next time, America.

Halloween 2008

What a day, good and bad. On one hand I had a good time with my friends celebrating Halloween, but I also lost a good photographer friend who’s had declining health for the last few months.

First though, the party.  I had a few different costumes for different parties last week including a soldier general and James Bond. But yesterday for the real Halloween parties, I decided to be Bob Dylan.

Me as Dylan
Me as Dylan

I specifically didn’t shave, and even made a laminated and very official looking backstage pass to wear so people who aren’t familiar with Bob Dylan (which was more than I thought) would know who I was.  My cousin Tony and I hit a few different parties and got home quite late.

Last week I spoke at the Professional Photographers of Iowa convention.  I had a good time there and met some great new people as well as seeing old friends.  One friend in particular, Lori Nordstrom, who is always kind to offer me help at these things, took me to see her brand new studio after I was done.  It is set in the town square of a perfect and beautiful small town.  She is a great artist, has a way of really connecting with people, and creates fantastic images!  She is known around the country for her style and ability to photograph children so well.

Just before going out to Iowa, I had heard that another photographer friend, Jerry Aucker, from Portland, Oregon was having more health problems.  He had had a few heart attacks recently and had declining health.  About a week ago he was hospitalized for kidney failure and pneumonia and then passed away yesterday afternoon.

Many in the industry know and love Jerry for his kindness and friendship.  He’s been in the portrait business for decades, since 1973 and has made many friends because of his thoughtfulness and loyalty.  He led the metro photographers organization there for years and had me out many times to speak to them.  He was a good and kind man and will be missed.

Mideast Vacation

This week I taught another week-long workshop, but this time it was in San Diego, California. The weather was awesome, the class was great, and I had a great response from the ideas, theories and techniques I shared with the other photographers.

During these workshops, I have many shoots using local models to demonstrate the various techniques and ideas. But just for fun one night, I created this image using someone that one of photographers in my class had met the night before. Being where I was, and seeing the scarfs that the photographer had in her bag, I created this image to look like Iraq.

Middle-Eastern Vacation

I don’t have a name for it yet, but decided to name this blog entry after an old Neil Young song “Mideast Vacation” I kept thinking about when creating this image.

Anyway….bla, bla, blog. I need to get back to work but will get more images up very soon.
Take care, and until next time, America!
