Spencer & Sarah’s Mountain Wedding Album Design

I love showing off my finished wedding albums. I want prospective brides to see everything – the entire day. Most photographers don’t control their lighting, so they only share one or two “lucky” photos that luckily worked out.

But weddings span a big chunk of a day in which the light is always changing (morning, afternoon, evening, inside, outside, bright sun, overcast, sunset, darkness). New brides comparing photographers should see how great an entire wedding album looks, start to finish. And because I control lighting with studio gear on location, brides look amazing the entire time, no matter what.

This wedding is a perfect example. As weddings often do, a series of circumstances caused the events to run late. I had almost no time to photograph the bride and groom alone (but I still got a good variety of amazing photos), the ceremony was after dusk (and it all looks gorgeous), and the family portraits were created in the pitch dark (yet they look stunning, beautiful, and everyone is tack sharp).

No matter what, everything looks amazing on every page of this wedding album, beginning to end. See every page in this video, and at the end is the album slideshow set to music.

Every one of my wedding collections includes a finished album too. I love physical products and love to deliver albums and wall canvases to my clients. I don’t say, “Here’s a disk, go figure it out online somewhere.” Instead, I personally lay out each page from scratch, and custom retouch and crop each image so the entire album look wonderful.

Notice how the layers of each portrait (subject, foreground, background, sky) are vivid, colorful, and work together. Nothing is blown out or muddy. It’s all gorgeous. And notice how the bride and groom look relaxed, have great body language, and have genuine expressions. Any photograph throughout the album can be blown up for wall art. Every image is crystal clear and full of color and emotion.

Even late into the night, with no “natural light” in the mountain canyon, I still have amazing photographs to end the album with, to finish telling the story.

Summer Mountain Wedding Portraits, Early Sneak Peek

On a hot summer day recently, I photographed a beautiful wedding up the canyon in a private mountain area. I’m currently designing the album for my clients, but had to share a couple of my early favorite portraits.

This first image is so stunning! I love the deep colors, the body language of the bride and groom, and the soft sweep of the bride’s dress. Of course I use studio lighting, even on location, so that’s why their skin tones and faces look great while the background has deep rich tones too.

In the canyon, the sun sets quickly, As it was going down, we used the lake for some gorgeous images, here with the bride’s veil flowing.

I really love this reflection from afar off. The rich colors, the beautiful couple leaning in to each other, and the soft lighting from the area mixed with studio lighting makes for a beautiful image. I’m thinking this may be a double-page ‘wow’ spread in the album.

And one more to share from the very end of the night. In almost pitch black night, I created some final photos to end the album – again with studio lights. I love how they’re each looking at each other in this portrait.

There are so many beautiful images from this wedding. They had a stunning flower arch they were married under, all the details of the day looked beautiful, some amazing family portraits, candids too, and much more. When their album design is finished, I’ll share it with you.

Wedding Album for Megan & Tres

During Covid, the Governor’s mandates closed wedding venues and religious buildings, so weddings moved into people’s homes. Megan and Tres had a gorgeous wedding at the end of 2020, and I have wanted for some time to share their album design. I’ve now got it on my blog, and this video shows each page of the album.

I like sharing entire albums because people will often say, “My wedding photographer shot thousands of images, but only about 5 turned out. The rest are blurry or our faces are dark. You got to be really lucky to get a good image.”

My answer is, “No. I create amazing images all day without excuse, regardless of location, time of day, or weather.” That’s why I like to share entire weddings so you can see that every page and every portrait is stunning. There’s nothing lucky about this. I control lighting with studio gear on location, so that whether we’re outside, inside, or even in a storm, your portraits look amazing.

So even though this wedding was in a variety of difficult locations (like being in a home, outdoors in the freezing cold, and ends on a rainy, foggy day), you’ll see that every page is gorgeous.

This video goes through all the wonderful images and page designs. Each double page spread is designed as a mini story, sharing the important moments of the day. Each spread is designed to be magical and eye-catching, so that no matter where you happen to open the album, there will be impact.

These are not designed with quick drag-and-drop or speedy auto-design software. It’s laid out by hand, meticulously page by page to make sure that each image is presented in exactly the right way.

This wedding couple is so beautiful and great together. I love the story of this album. I can’t get enough of these two, and have been thinking of some sample prints to make up from this wedding. Just look at this opening page. I love this design, with the mountains and deep blue sky framing in the new couple. The bride’s dress is swooped out to match the lines of the mountain sides.

After getting ready, we battled the cold to create some portraits alone on a nearby walking path. The warm colors surrounding the couple in these is so inviting and beautiful.

We then mixed in some new family portraits with the little kids. And you’ll notice that faces are clear and skin tones are natural while at the same time skies and backgrounds are vivid. This clarity is unique and created with studio lighting on location – not haphazard, “natural light,” which leaves faces dull, skin blotchy, and skies white and blown out. The expressions on the kids are cute and natural, and everyone looks great.

With this control of light, we can create some epic portraits that are crystal clear of the bride and groom. The skies are vivid blue, mountains clear, and the bride and groom are not blurry. Their faces are clear and in focus, and their skin tones are perfect and natural.

The action sequences are fun but beautiful. I love this cake and the expressions on the couple in this series.

During covid, the LDS temples were closed. But later when they opened the couple was able to get an appointment to be sealed. This was months later at the Draper LDS Temple, and I came to finish the wedding album with some beautiful, foggy, temple portraits.

Without excuse, we’ll get some beautiful images. On this particular morning, it was a really cold, rainy, and foggy. But a little pop of light in the right places, and the couple really stands out and the sky shows it’s true color tones of being dark and gray. The rain and fog just add drama to these images, making this an unforgettable morning.

The spring flowers mixed with the tall lines of the temple, made for a gorgeous set of images. These are just some of the highlights. There’s a lot more from this album, and you can see it all in the video above.

Mark & Kendra’s Airport Engagement Portraits

My friends Mark and Kendra recently got married and I wanted to share their gorgeous engagement photos. Because Mark is a pilot, this couple wanted some fun engagement portraits at the airport. It was the perfect location and very creative, even down to the details of their costumes.

I love how these turned out. and always love to do location photo shoots, especially when the location incorporates something about the client’s personality. Everything in a photo should tell a story about you, and not be random. So being at the airport was the perfect choice for these two.

It was a cold winter day and they were short on time, so we had to work fast. To compensate for the difference in elevation with the couple standing on the wing, a ladder was needed to get the angles just right. And being winter, the sky, coloring, and natural light of the air was gray and drab. So a studio light on location was needed to really make the colors and the sky pop and create shadows and dimension. The results are wonderful skin tones and gorgeous colors.

 

We had a lot of great choices and I love them all, especially this one of these two running off together. One idea for their invitation was to have the images as old snapshots. So I cropped them square and treated the images so that they had a faded film look. Here was one idea of them as a trio.

Their final invitation design was an airline ticket, and this was the back of the design. I shot this using the old wood on my coffee table.

Before ending the shoot and entering the hanger, I did a couple individual headshots of these two as well. Here are my two favorites of those, cropped as squares with an old film edge.

I’m so excited that these two are married. They’re both fantastic people individually, and both incredibly accomplished in so many ways. They’re really good together, and they both compliment each other as a couple. I know they’ll make a great team and I’m glad they’ve moved forward with engagement and marriage.

Engagement Proposal Video

Mark also had me come photograph their proposal too. They love to rock climb together and he’d arranged to have a ring at the top of the route for her to get and bring back down. He told her that she was going to help him in a high-level training exercise and that she was to retrieve the “objective” from the top. She had no clue he was proposing and when she repelled down, he was on one knee.

To explain me being there, he told her that I was just in the area doing a shoot and thought it’d be fun to get some climbing photos. But I was really there to capture video and some photos of the proposal. She was completely surprised and you can see the immense sense of joy, relief, and surprise.

Elyse’s Wedding Album Design, Salt Lake Temple & Utah Capitol Building

The Salt Lake Temple is closing this month for a massive 4 year renovation. Plus this is the time of year when many people get engaged, so I thought a Salt Lake Temple wedding would be perfect for my blog right now.

I’ve had people ask about this album because I originally shared a few early favorites from this wedding on my blog, but not the entire wedding album. So here’s the entire album, in video form.

I love sharing entire albums because then people can see how wonderful things look from beginning to end. I don’t rely on “lucky” shots, but rather custom light every photograph to create an amazing set of images for the final album. To really see the story of these images and how it all flows in the album design, watch the video above.

And here are just some of the album page spreads that you see in the above video. As you can see, these two look like models. The portraits are romantic, fun, and flow together in a gorgeous album design.

Some Early Favorite Portraits from Elyse’s Wedding at the Salt Lake Temple and Utah Capitol Building

Elyse and Michael’s wedding portraits are all so gorgeous!! Their album design is finished and currently in Italy getting book bound, but I know many people are excited to see their images. So here are some early favorites of mine that I’d like to share from their day.

These two look so happy together and the weather was beautiful. It was a little stormy which meant we had some dramatic skies and amazing clouds. Even the sky in this reflection is deep and dramatic.

We have a variety of images around the temple, and in each of them you can see the romance and excitement in these two. I love this first one where you can see the entire temple.

Then this one where they are up close to the temple, and looking at each other excitedly.

We have lots of beautiful and romantic kisses from the day too.

And more and more images of them being excited and loving together.

Their reception followed at the Utah State Capitol Building. Before the party started we did some portraits utilizing the deep sky and setting sun. This worked out great in the album to introduce the arrival at their new location.

This dip at sunset is to die for. All the leading lines in the image, even from the clouds, point to these two.

Then inside we did a few bridals of Elyse alone. This was one of my favorites of her. The beautiful studio lighting mixed with the warm tones of the room are inviting, and she looks stunning. Plus all these details and lighting add drama and depth to her dress and the entire background.

I’m very excited for this couple and wish them a wonderful new life together. And I can’t wait to deliver the finished book-bound Italian album when it’s done.

Eliza’s Wedding Sneak Peak, Draper LDS Utah Temple

I had the pleasure of photographing Eliza’s wedding at the Draper LDS Temple, and wanted to share some of my early favorite photographs from her lovely day. We had a gorgeous spring day with deep blue skies, so I really wanted to bring out those deep tones with some custom lighting. And as you can see, these two look amazing in every portrait. I really love this image showing the front of the temple.

 

And inside the tall columns, this dip in black and white is just stunning. Eliza’s a dancer and moves beautifully as you can see, and I love all of the lines and shapes that are surrounding these two.

We had tulips in bloom, so we made sure to capture some special moments with the beautiful flowers framing this newly married couple.

And we have lots of variety of portraits and moods in different location around building. All of these have made for a gorgeous wedding album design that I hope to share with you soon when it’s all printed.

I love how happy these two are together, and their energy and joy for each other shows in the images all day long.

We have a mix of black and white candids in the wedding album design too, showing fun moments like this.

James and Stephanie’s Idaho Falls Temple Wedding Album Design

I’ve been excited to share this wedding with you for a while. It was a gorgeous wedding at the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. I’ve made this video below to show you each page and storyline of the album design.

And here are some of my favorite pages. I like to start off albums with an introductory image that sets the stage and mood by showcasing the location. Here we’re starting at the Idaho Falls Temple on a beautiful summer day.

Skipping ahead in the album, we have these stunning couple portraits of the new bride and groom using the temple as our backdrop.

I really love this page design. The horizontal line from the temple extends perfectly across both images, even though the two images are from different vantage points. The tall lines are a great contrast against the couple leaning and kissing.

Then leaving the temple to go to the ring ceremony, we stopped to create some portraits across the river looking back at the temple.

The long leading lines of the river heading towards the temple mixed with this couple kissing in the foreground makes this one of my favorite images from the wedding.

During the ring ceremony, these little girls were adorable and did a great job.

And of course I love creating studio-lit images of wedding couples on location during the reception. These two laughing in this second image is magical.

Eliza’s Gorgeous Bridal & Pre-Wedding Portrait Shoot

I’m very excited to share Eliza’s gorgeous bridal and pre-wedding shoot. These two are a great couple, and so good together. It makes me excited to photograph their upcoming wedding.

This portrait session started off on a cold and rainy spring day here in Utah. While waiting for an opening in the rain, we started photographing inside my Davis County studio where it’s both warm, and where we have full control of lighting for a variety of looks and styles. And because the groom had not seen Eliza’s dress yet, we started with a “first sight” series.

Look at how he glows with excitement, seeing his bride for the first time in her beautiful dress, spinning her around to see her all the way around, and hugging her tight.

Feeding off these two’s glowing faces and excitement, we moved into some color couple portraits on a fashion gray background with some soft studio lighting.

And then some of just Eliza alone in her dress, doing a high-key bridal set, white on white. The simplicity, color harmony, and dramatic lighting really make this image. She look absolutely gorgeous in it, and I love the details in the back of this dress and all the lovely lines.

I love shooting a variety of lighting styles and looks, so we then moved to a set of snappy, high-contrast black-and-whites on a dark background for a modern yet classic feel. We made up this framed wall collage to tell a story between the images, and to showcase their personalities in a finished portrait display at their wedding reception. This will look beautiful displayed on the wall in their new home together too.

Here are some of those images up close so you can see how happy and great these two look to be together.


After finishing the studio part of the shoot, I checked the weather and saw a clear spot in the clouds and rain. We took advantage of that opening in the storm and quickly drove to an outdoor open area near my studio. We worked quickly in order to beat the cold, while using the wind and stormy sky to our artistic advantage. Using some powerful auxiliary lighting on site to sculpt the couple and bring depth into the terrain and sky, we got some breathtaking panoramas.

In this series of three images, notice the storyline as the groom pulls his bride closer for a kiss as she dances towards him.



Of course the bride alone looks fantastic and stunning throughout the shoot. It was hard choosing the best images from this shoot because everything looked spectacular.

As the outdoor wind got frigid, we decided to end the shoot with one more dramatic portrait utilizing the rocks, storm clouds, and wind. In this final portrait, these two look like they’re straight out of a national magazine fashion shoot. Their expressions, body language, all perfect, the wind blowing her veil softly, and custom, dramatic lighting to make the sky and clouds pop.

I loved seeing these two interact on this shoot, and how much the groom helped and protected his bride from this outdoor environment. He carried her over boulders, hugged her, warmed her arms, and continually made sure she was taken care of. I know that these two will have a wonderful life together. And I have loved working on this order and framing and delivering these beautiful portraits. They are seriously breathtaking in person.

Elyse’s Gorgeous Studio Engagement Shoot

Elyse is a beautiful and upbeat woman who is very well-known and a friend to everyone. And she’s getting married. Though she and her fiancé live in California, we did a studio engagement shoot while they were here in Utah. And the images are gorgeous! I’m really excited to share them with you.

In fact we just finished her portrait inserts for her announcements, and I’m excited for people to get them in the mail. She posted one of the photographs on Facebook yesterday and it quickly garnered over 700 likes in just a few hours (it’s now over 850). It just shows how much she’s loved and how excited her friends and family are for her upcoming wedding.

Here are some of my favorite images from our shoot, designed up as a framed square wall collage.

I love how beautiful they look in each of these images, and how great they look together.

After shooting some on a light fashion gray background, we changed up the lighting and background and went with darker colors behind. Here some of our favorites.

I took a few portraits from the brown series and designed this framed trio. It’s a beautiful way to show a story between the images.

I’m very excited about this engagement shoot and for their upcoming wedding. I know it’ll be a gorgeous and blissful event.

Tiffany’s Wedding at Provo City Center Temple

We missed the storms and had a wonderful wedding day at the Provo City Center Temple. There were rain storms all week here in Utah, and rain even earlier in the day, but by the time we did photographs at the temple, we got wonderful weather for Tiffany and Jacob. Plus I always bring and use custom lighting to mix with the sun to accentuate and bring out the deep blue sky while sculpting the bride and groom. In the end, we have some absolutely beautiful wedding day portraits for this gorgeous wedding couple.

Nothing beats a finished album. To me, digital photographs are the idea or plan (how they could be when they’re done), and the finished wedding album is the final execution of those ideas. It’s awe-inspiring and emotional to view your finished album for the first time, and many of my clients will tell me years later how much they still enjoy sitting down and going through each page of their wedding album. I loved working on this album, and am excited to share it with you.

Tiffany and Jacob are a beautiful couple and this wedding is beautiful. These two are great together as you can see. And though I share the entire wedding in the video above, here are some of my favorite page spreads from the album design.

I love the wind and motion in the ribbons that accentuate Tiffany leaning in. And the deep blue sky and temple in the background make this a wonderful spread in the album.

These two are dancers, and this dancing trio set is romantic and beautiful.

Walking together and sitting on the back side of the temple made from some beautiful angles and romantic moments.

And to end our time at the temple, we have a romantic kiss with a full-length image of the temple in direct sunlight.

Kara’s Bridal Portraits

I just featured Kara’s engagement shoot and I thought I’d continue featuring Kara for another post because her bridals are so beautiful! You have to see these.

I love these of her. She glows in these portraits, and they looked fantastic framed and on display at the wedding reception.

We spent the bridal shoot laughing and having a great time here at my Utah studio, and ended up with lots of favorites. I especially love these two images though, one with a light background and one with a dark background – both dramatic, both gorgeous, and both with a different mood and lighting style.

And of course they looked especially great printed and on display. I’m now finishing the design for her winter wedding album, and I’m excited for her to see all of her gorgeous wedding day images. It has been a joy to work with her and her family.
