Lindsey’s Wedding Sneak Peek, Salt Lake Temple in 100º Weather

I recently shot Lindsey’s wedding during Utah’s recent and very hot heat wave. In fact, temperatures that day were over 100º at times. But that didn’t stop us from shooting outside in the sweltering heat, but it did mean we had to work quickly outside and it meant that I needed lots of external lighting to beat the sun for great skin tones and a deep blue sky. The Salt Lake LDS Temple makes for a great backdrop in her wedding images, and here are a few of my early favorites.

Cox_LCooper-W-1149-EdgeCox_LCooper-W-1117-Edge
Cox_LCooper-W-1139-Edge

Cox_LCooper-W-1406-Edge

During one of my breaks, I took advantage of the hot day to shoot some really cool infrared black and white photos of the temple. They’ll be a great accent in the album design.

When there is that much sun, it means lots of infrared in the air – a band of light that is invisible to the human eye. Because vegetation reflects infrared energy, leaves and trees many times will turn white while the sky will go very dark. And with these images being 30 second exposures, you can see the movements and softness of various leaves and they moved and blew in the breeze. Cox_LCooper-W-1185-Edge Cox_LCooper-W-1191-Edge

Well there’s much more to come, and when I get the album design finished, I’ll be sure to share the full design here too.

New Portraits for the Doctors of Premiere Wellness in Utah

Premiere Wellness has been updating their website and needed new and professional portraits of their doctors. In doing this shoot I thought about myself and what I would look for in a doctor based on an online photo. I would search not just for credentials and experience, but also look to see if a doctor seemed approachable and kind in their photo. Are they going to listen to me and customize their care based on my needs? These doctors explained to me that this is exactly how they work, so their photo needed to show that. That means images that are professional, beautifully lit, and have an emphasis on emotion and personality.BryCox_Wellness-07

Premiere Wellness offers chiropractic care, physical therapy and holistic treatments from Dr. Kory Brahnam (center), Dr. Evan Brady (left), and Dr. Jared Anderson (right). Aside from the group portrait, we also did individual images of each doctor for their website as well as on business cards and in papers and for speeches they might give.

Architectural Photographs + Website Design for Ane Hatch & Associates

Many know that with my specialty in lighting and design that I will create architectural photographs for the right clients. It’s not easy to light and create strong and moving images of inanimate objects, but my job is easier when I’m shooting homes for Abby at Ane Hatch and Associates. I’ve been photographing her homes for years and I also design her company’s website.

Their look and design needs to be as clean, emotional, and professional as their work. They’ve won a number of awards, they’ve been in magazines, and they cater to clients who appreciate her impeccable tastes. Her company focuses on very exclusive homes and Abby starts from scratch and she imagines everything in her head, then puts all of these details down in her architectural drawings. She then oversees the building and then finishes with complete interior design. Her homes are works of art down to the last details, and I’m really excited to share with you one of her latest projects.

Jessica & Cory’s Wedding Sneak Peek at the Beautiful Draper Temple

Last weekend I photographed Jessica and Cory’s wedding at the LDS Draper temple. It was a beautiful sunny day, …in fact very hot at 100º. The sky was blue, we had great clouds for a dramatic background, and Jessica and Cory were great together. All that together meant that we created some wonderful images for their upcoming wedding album design. Here are some of my early favorites.

New Commercial Portraits for KUTV News Anchors

I always love photographing the KUTV news team. Time really flies between our shoots and it feels like almost no time has passed as we all laugh and have a great time shooting images. The entire team is great to work with and always fun and extra grateful to have me there working. I’ve been doing their official portraits for many years now, and these images get used on billboards, in brochures, on websites, and really anything where they need an official portrait.

Cox_KUTV2014-2057

We shoot a variety of images of every team in a variety of locations, all with custom lighting. It has has to be done quickly because we are shooting these images as they are working, plus it’s all done in and around the hustle and bustle of a busy newsroom. To add complexity, we need to create images really quickly in a variety of locations all in a few minutes while we can get certain people together. That means constant new lighting setups all over, and shooting so that images look perfect in-camera. We move around from their news studio, to a white studio, to all green, as well as setting up outside. And the chef of course is photographed in their kitchen too. We’re never in the same spot for more than a few minutes.Cox_KUTV2014-1999

Shauna Lake and Mark Koelbel have been great clients of mine for many years, and it is always good to see them. They make a great team too and it’s fun seeing how talented and polished they are as they work live.

And below is the entire nightly news team, as well as a number of other favorite images from the shoot.

KUTV produces news almost all day long. They have a constant line up of shows and so they have a lot of talent. We photograph everyone and all the groups, and I won’t post them all here, but here is a screenshot some of their favorite head-shots and how they’re used on their website’s contact page.

Mayzee’s One-Year Old Portraits

One of the fun things about being a professional portrait photographer for so many years is being able to see my clients grow and change. Many times I’ll photograph families, then the children’s engagements and weddings, then maternity, then baby portraits, then kids and new family portraits. It’s rewarding to see people come in again and again and see how they change and grow over time. It makes many of my clients feel more like family than customers as I’m a part of some of the big moments in their lives.

This particular family portrait has been a favorite of mine and has been a sample canvas on my wall for years. I’ve done a lot of portraits for them over the years and now the second to youngest son (two in from the left side) who is a young man in this family portrait, is much older and married. His wife recently called me.

BryCox_Mayzee_09

They have a beautiful sweet baby that just turned one years old. Her name is Mayzee and she came in for her one-year-old portraits.

She was a joy to photograph and warmed up to me really quickly. She would smile and laugh at me, and was cheerful throughout the entire shoot. Her personality had me laughing most of the time too, and she really responded well to all of my antics.
BryCox_Mayzee_01

Here is a wall collage using a b&w family portrait in the middle and two smaller wall images on the sides.

And here are those images bigger.

BryCox_Mayzee_02 BryCox_Mayzee_03 BryCox_Mayzee_07

With her cute clothes and happy personality, we were able to do a variety of backgrounds and options. But no matter what prop I’d bring out to keep her in place and steady on her feet, she really loved my little blue chair the most. She’d push it around like a lawn mower, would sit in it, spin and turn in it, and if I brought out something else, she’d go get the chair and bring it back into the shoot.

BryCox_Mayzee_04

BryCox_Mayzee_05

For this outfit and background I tried my little leather ottoman, but she quickly pushed it away and brought back the chair, as you can see in this trio design below. Another thing to note is that these photographs in these collages below have had zero retouching and no effects.

My specialty is exquisite lighting and emotion. That means that even before images are retouched that they should have the creative side of great expressions and personality, as well as the technical side of perfect skin tones, smooth skin, and sparkly eyes that pop. I don’t fake those things with software effects, filters, or painting afterwards. And the results are images with more emotional impact that I think people can see whether they’re trained in portrait photography or not.

BryCox_Mayzee_06

I really love this shoot and I’m excited to share it with you. There were so many favorites and such a variety of this little girl.

Liz & Dewayne’s Bridal & Pre-Wedding Portraits

I’ve been excited to share the images from Liz & Dewayne’s bridal and pre-wedding shoot, but wanted to wait until after their wedding. As you can see, we had a great time creating some wonderful portraits in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah using streets, textures, and pillars as out backdrop.

BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_01 BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_02

This dancing image above is great as both a stand alone image as well as in this trio sequence.

BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_03 BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_04 BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_05

The long lines in these pillars really makes a powerful impact, especially mixed with this great kiss. BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_06 BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_07

These two really look great together. And having shot tons of couples over the years, I especially noticed that these two were extra thoughtful and helpful with each other. Something I had to comment on during the shoot. But that feeling really shows in the images and makes these all the more romantic and powerful.BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_08 BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_09

As the sun dropped low, the trees in the distance created some wonderfully abstract shadows on these pillars, but also let a pocket of light light through in just the right spot to highlight the couple.
BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_10

It made a great place to also do a portrait of just Dewayne.BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_11

And to close, it’s always fun to shoot and design up a collage of the bridal details in black & white, showing enhances on the ribbons, lace, shoes, ring, flowers, buttons, and hair.
BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Bridal_12

I know you’ll want to see some of their wedding photos and I will for sure post some later. But in the meantime, if you’re getting married and are looking for some incredible images, give me a call at 801-728-3317.

Band Portraits for Ryan Shupe & the RubberBand

This week Ryan Shupe & the RubberBand put on a show outside of Salt Lake City, Utah, and we used the opportunity to shoot some new band portraits. These kinds of images are used for posters, marketing, web sites, and overall band promotion.

Band portraits need to be iconic, visually interesting, they need to show the vibe of the band so that you know what a live show will be like. Band portraits need to show personality, they can’t be mundane or normal. So all of that means that band portraits are no different than any other portrait I create for people – they need to have exquisite lighting and emotion.

For this image, I envisioned the band on stage with Ryan up front looking right into the camera. I wanted instruments showing and also all the feel of the stage with the stage lights and smoke – except it’s not possible to do a shot like that during the show with an amphitheater full of people. It had to be shot during the day before the show. So I set it up, lit the scene, and shot it knowing I’d be recreating from scratch the entire “feel” of the stage later in post production.

Cox_RShupe_Sandy2015-178-Edge

Above is the final version after all the digital work. And below, is an animation of my progress. In the animation it may come together in just a few seconds, but it didn’t take seconds to make.

Notice how in the first and completely raw shot, the skin tones and lighting on the individuals is perfect, but it’s in the middle of the day. It doesn’t look like night and there are no stage lights. From there I slowly build it up, painting in from scratch the stage lights, the atmosphere, the smoke, as well as the effects of the colored lights on Ryan, his jacket, on the band, and on the walls. I’m constantly asking myself, how would this light affect the scene? Where would it be visible? Because of where Ryan is standing, he is being lit with the most diverse set of colored lights from various places. How those lights all skim across his black leather jacket have all been painted in.

The result is something both real and natural to the eye, but also is a shot that could not have been created otherwise. It’s an impactful image.

BryCox_RShupeBandPic_Animation1b

This second band portrait was created to look real and natural, to be impactful, and to also show the energy of the group. But it wasn’t originally shot like this either.
Cox_RShupe_Sandy2015-BandPhoto1-bw2-Edge

To create it, I individually lit and shot each band member separately. I then took the best of each individual and put this together, lining up each brick and line in the background to match the bending perspective shift created by my camera’s angle and lens choice. I really liked the wide angle feel and the bending of the bricks created by that. There was a lot of very small and detailed painting needed to get all of these image to seamlessly blend together, and for shadows to fall where they should, and for the creation of shadows and mixing shadows. But the end result is a really cool and iconic band picture.
BryCox_RShupeBandPic_parts

Here it is in color too before the final conversion to black and white. This color image could work for a lot of purposes when color is required, though in the black and white I did multi-tone it so that it grabs the eye even in b&w.
Cox_RShupe_Sandy2015-BandPhoto1-color-Edge

I was also hired to shoot some concert images during the show later, and I’ll get to posting them soon too. But for as much time as these took to create, I wanted to post today about these these band photos and what really goes into sometimes just one or two commercial images.

There are lots of commercial needs for great photos, some that require almost no Photoshop and post-production and some (like these) that require a lot. My specialty is lighting and emotion and I’m on the Adobe software team training photographers all over the country on advanced clean and natural Photoshop techniques. So for all your commercial imaging needs, give me a call at 801-728-3317. Tell me what business you’re in and what you’d like and let’s make it happen. Let’s create some iconic images for your business that make you shine.

Liz & Dewayne’s Engagement Portraits

I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to photograph Liz and Dewayne’s engagement portraits. They are a great couple together, and we created so many wonderful and romantic images that it was hard to narrow them down. Here are a few of my favorites.

BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Engagement_06

Being a photographer based outside of Salt Lake City, Utah, I’ve got a lot of options right here at my studio. For a lot of variety, we shot both outside in the studio gardens as well as inside the studio, and in color and black and white. And I always like to do a few images of the bride and groom individually too. For these I went with my high-contrast black and white series and these two images look wonderful together.

BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Engagement_04 BryCox_Liz_Dewayne_Engagement_03This image is the official invitation photograph. I really like how great they both look, the sparkles in their smiles, and how close they are to each other in this.  I love photographing couples that are happy together because the images are even more romantic.

I also can’t wait to share the bridal portraits, as they are really out of this world. But I will hold off until after the wedding so that the dress can be kept a surprise.

Makenna’s Senior Portrait Sneak Peek

This weekend I photographed Makenna for her high school senior portraits. She graduates in just a couple weeks, and though she hasn’t seen any of these images yet, I thought I’d share a sneak peek of some of my early favorites for the Memorial Day weekend.

She is smart, funny, and the shoot was so much fun. We started outside at her softball field and successfully avoided the rain while getting some really cool images of her in uniform. The storm clouds made the shoot all the more dramatic.

BryCox_McKenna-Sr_01

Then we came to my studio for some fun studio images like this trio and textured art piece.  BryCox_McKenna-Sr_02 BryCox_McKenna-Sr_03 BryCox_McKenna-Sr_04

With both a location and studio shoot, we really shot a lot and will have a lot of fun picking them out. With so many great images, I’ll make sure I post some others here after things are worked up.

Happy Memorial Day weekend, everyone. And until next time, America.

BlackRapid Motorcycle Ride 2015

For two weeks, BlackRapid (maker of the coolest and fastest camera straps) is on a motorcycle tour of the backcountry of Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, and California as part of their #livethemoment mantra.

BlackRapidMotorcycle

The night before the ride, they used my place to setup and prep for the next morning. And I have to admit that I really liked having these cool bikes in my driveway and parked in my garage for the night.BryCox_BlackRapid_01

The next morning we had a 70% chance of rain so we trailered some bikes behind the BlackRapid support van while Mike Ridinger and I rode our bikes and we headed out to Pictureline in Salt Lake City for some strap giveaways. BryCox_BlackRapid_04

Here’s a closeup of BlackRapid founder and owner, Ron Henry, his wife Shawna, and my good friend Mike Ridinger, a serious and long-time biker.BryCox_BlackRapid_06

Here’s a shot I took of Mike as we rode into Salt Lake City that morning, with storm clouds looming around us, and a bit of light rain.© BryCox.com, Bry Cox

Once we arrived at Pictureline, the sky cleared up. Even the weather apps changed to show better weather. Here, the BlackRapid team set up and gave away straps for a few hours, answered questions, and let people try out the straps with their own cameras.BryCox_BlackRapid_08

Then by early afternoon we headed south towards Moab. I had to be back for appointments the next day, so I just rode for the day with the team. We had wet roads most of the way, got a little rain, but never anything too bad. In fact we watched heavy storms pass to the right, the left, in front and behind, but never right on us. Here is Ron on his Harley.

BryCox_BlackRapid_10

And yes, these were taken one-handed as I rode, using a BlackRapid strap. I didn’t look through the camera obviously, just held it out and shot guessing by instinct on the composition. I really like this one below with my handlebars and Mike and Ron in the distance.© BryCox.com, Bry Cox

Here’s Shawna on my bike during a gas break.BryCox_BlackRapid_09

Part of the fun of being on a bike is that you are out in the environment, you feel everything, smell everything, and you see the entire sky, and not just the frame of a sky through a car window. And the sky that day with the storm clouds was unbelievable. © BryCox.com, Bry Cox

We were always seeing storms to the side and behind us, smelling the rain, feeling the wind, but never a huge downpour on us. Here’s an iPhone pic I took of our bikes with the support van as we watched a storm to our left and one in front as well blow by.BryCox_BlackRapid_16

Here’s Mike with that storm in the distance, sporting a small BlackRapid strap for his point-and-shoot.BryCox_BlackRapid_17

Below is an image of another great storm to our side, and the clouds and light were perfect. Mike pulled over to shoot it and I had to do the same.

© BryCox.com, Bry Cox

I took one of it too with my iPhone so I’d have something to post to social media accounts that day as we were riding. This is one of my favorite iPhone images from the day.

BryCox_BlackRapid_18

And this rainbow was to our left as we approached Moab.

BryCox_BlackRapid_20

After reaching Moab, we ate dinner and I as they settled in to camp, I got back on my bike and headed home so I’d be back for my appointments the next day.

Well that is just DAY 1, and for me it was a 550 mile ride round-trip ride. But the BlackRapid team will be riding for two weeks and you can follow the trip on BlackRapid’s social media accounts, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, as well as Mike’s Instagram and Facebook account.

And if you’d like to see what I posted from my phone (besides this blog post) they’re on my iPhone Instagram account as well as to my personal Facebook page, using #BlackRapidMotorcycle2015.

Until next time, America.

Teaching Fashion and Creative Photography for a Week in Texas

Every year for one week in the spring, I teach an intense week-long workshop in Texas for photographers who fly in from all over the country, and sometimes other countries as well. I am back from that event and am mostly recovered (as I get little to sometimes no sleep each night), and wanted to share some of the images I created while I was there sharing my entire system, everything from lighting, to digital workflow, to business.

This event is always amazing and inspirational, and this time in particular I have come home to some of the best thank you emails and calls from the photographers that I think I’ve ever had. I really appreciate it. I feel honored and grateful to be a mentor to photographers and help them learn and do better.

So I have specific steps to creating a portrait that I share. The trick is to get exquisite lighting, truly capture someone’s personality, and also nail everything technically as well for perfect skin tones, perfect brightness and contrast, perfect eyes, and fantastic expressions that draw you in as a viewer.

And with perfect images, it means I can spend some time on the computer doing artistic work rather than corrective work, so I have fun creating paintings, collages, and creating other art pieces.

© BryCox.com, Bry Cox

© BryCox.com, Bry Cox

Here I shot this model against a studio background using a specific fashion light setup. Nothing has been retouched, no eyes have been brightened and no skin blurred. All I did was convert to black and white and design this awesome collage that shows a lot of personality.

BryCox_Texas2015_010

When an image is real, it has more power. The mind can tell when something is fake, and by lighting exquisitely and capturing emotion in a real way, the image is far more powerful. Then, if I want to do some artwork on it (like this image below), the image can retain it’s powerful draw because any retouching done to eyes and face is so subtle, that it can’t be seen, and all the heavy artistic work is done to the background.

© BryCox.com, Bry Cox

Of course I love my paintings, and so I took this same image another direction as well, painting it too.

© BryCox.com, Bry Cox

Here are more un-retouched images. For variety, I used the curtains in the conference room, and shot these all with one studio light. Again, none of these have been retouched, I just designed up this cool collage showing a variety of poses and emotions to tell a story.

BryCox_Texas2015_009

I also shot this model in the hotel’s bar using the Einstein bulbs hanging in the back as a background. I had to be strategic to hide people in the background, but created this with a very minimal setup.

BryCox_Texas2015_007

I took three images from that set and designed this trio.

© BryCox.com, Bry Cox

And I shot other models both in studio and out.

© BryCox.com, Bry Cox

© BryCox.com, Bry Cox

One night in particular, I photograph a slew of models, each for only a few minutes, and each in separate locations around the hotel, inside and out. None of these images are retouched or corrected. These are all straight out of camera. But this also shows one big creative secret, and that is to not shoot the same thing twice – no two images can be the same. To truly be creative, you have to change up each shot making small changes and then big changes, and these thumbnails show that.

BryCox_Texas2015_021

These were shot for the event so I didn’t work up any of them. But if I do, I’ll post them here on my blog.

So a special thanks to my cute models for coming and working with me, to my suppliers and sponsors, and everyone who came out and oversold my class.

I love speaking and teaching in Texas and love that it’s full of people that pour their whole heart and soul into making it a great event.

And did I mention that I played blues harp in a band there too? Here’s our official band photo shot by the famous John Hartman, shot just before our gig in the hotel’s garage.

And here we are backstage before going on, shot with my point and shoot camera on a tadpole selfie stick. I’m still hoping to find some video of us playing.
