Bry Cox in THREE International Magazines This Month! (Part 1 – USA)

I am asked to write articles for various professional photographer magazines, and this month I’m 3 international magazines, all at once!

Professional Photographers of America, Professional Photographers of Canada, and PhotoWorld Magazine of China all asked me for articles, and coincidentally, they all printed this month, August 2010.

All US professional photographers should get this magazine in the mail automatically each month, but in case you’re looking for it on newsstands, here’s what it looks like.

My article is on Fashion Posing — how to break the traditional rules of posing to create something exciting.  The basis of my article is that you have to know the rules of traditional posing in order to ‘break’ those rules and do something completely different, but that actually works visually and compositionally.

Here’s how the first page of my article looks (page 82-84).

I’m not only honored to be in this magazine, but feel it a special honor that I am in this magazine at the very same time they have a tribute to my favorite photographer and one of my ultimate photographic influences, Richard Avedon.  Avedon was one of the most influential and longest standing fashion photographers in the industry, and he passed away in 2004.

He really raised the bar with fashion and advertising and storytelling, and I have sought after all of his art books (which are very expensive).  I think I own almost all of them now.  His article is on page 22-24.

You can see parts of the current issue at the official website, PPMag.org.  And if you are a regular Bry Cox Blog reader, then you’ll remember I mentioned writing this article in a past blog post.

As far as the the Chinese and Canadian magazines go, I have not yet received my copies, but will post about them when they come.

My Grandpa Tony

Over ten years ago, I switched my studio completely over from film to digital.  Digital photography was at the time very new, and practically unheard of.  Many told me at conventions that I was making a mistake.  But during that time, I went through the family’s old photographs and created this piece of my Grandpa Tony, who died long before I was born.

When people saw this, they flipped, and many asked me to create mosaics like this of their loved ones.  This started a new product line here at Cox Studio that I called the Cox Timepiece.

Just recently, my dad and others organized a Cox Reunion, for all Cox descendants going back to my Grandpa Tony’s grandpa, and down; something that hadn’t happened in about 20 years.  I was asked to restore many old photographs for my dad and others, so they could be on display at the reunion.

For myself, I went back and found this mosaic in my archives and reprinted it again, as digital printing has improved leaps and bounds over the past 10 years.

When I pulled it up on my screen, I was expecting to make some major changes since I myself have grown in my design and digital abilities over the past decade.  However, I didn’t make a single change.  I was not only impressed with the design, but I just I loved looking at these photographs all over again.

I love the photograph on the right with his tie blowing in the wind, the hunting photo, the suits, the smile….

…and in the bottom left, this vacation photo of my grandparents on the Golden Gate Bridge, dressed for fun.  Isn’t this beautiful?  I love the composition, the posing, the clothes, the paper, and the quality of this image.

I think there is a resemblance too in the family line.  Here’s a recent photo I did of myself here at my studio for comparison.

Looking at these images, I’m reminded of the importance of photographs as heirlooms.  Now more than ever, we’re being bombarded with cheap pictures and the ability to share and see them without ever printing a one.  Those serve a purpose, but the quality isn’t there.  And nothing replaces the ability to hold a photograph in your hand.

These old photographs of my grandpa, though many were snap shots, have a sense of quality, of lighting, and of composition.  They tell a story and were printed so well that they’ve lasted generations.

One of my favorite parts of my job is the final delivery where people can handle and hold their photographs.  Up until then, everything is viewed digitally.  But in the final delivery — after the retouching, the printing, the mounting and glazing and any other artwork is done — in the final delivery, there something tangible.  And with that tangible photograph comes an indescribable palatable feeling that only comes in being able to hold and appreciate a photograph, a feeling that doesn’t exist when seeing an image on a phone or computer screen, no matter how great it is.

Cheri’s Bridal Portraits

Here is a part of Cheri’s order from her bridal session.  I started with some fashion-lit headshots for some stunning smiling images, and to get a real and genuine sparkle in her eye.

And with those series of images, made this framed trio.

Then we went to one of my new in studio sets for a vibey grouping of cool images.

Then to some modern full length images that also have a classic appeal.  Beautiful lines in this one!

One to show the full dress and one with some funkiness to show the criss-cross back.During the session, we got a bit of rain, but we decided to go outside anyway and get some fun images of her outside in the weather.  I used one to create this painting.  The final paintings are finished as a stretched canvas with hand glazing.

This was a great session!  Everything looked so beautiful and Cheri and her mom were a joy to work with.

Baptism Portraits

This beautiful girl is just turning 8, and got some new portraits to celebrate her baptism.  She was absolutely adorable and very fun to talk to!  Here are a few of the images from her portrait session.

We started off the session with some beautiful low-key images, meaning light-on-dark.  I started of with some classical style lighting, and moved to some fashion lighting styles.

Then we switched up the color scheme and brought in one of my favorite chairs and did a series of her barefoot in the chair, being a kid.  I loved how these turned out.

Then we ended with a fun portrait with her mom.  I was glad that she too was in light colored clothing.  This image is so stunning of the both of them.  Though we did some of these smiling, I prefer this one, the more contemplative one.  Both look beautiful!

Aubrey

I had a blast photographing Aubrey!  She has stunning eyes and a beautiful smile!  She needed some images for her business cards and website, so I started with some nice images that would work good for her, both close up and full-length.

I then wanted to create some really great images of her with a fashion flare, and started with my fun white chair and model-gray background.

Aubrey always has great shoes, and I wanted to show them off, as well as her legs.  Between lens choice and a low angle, this really works.  But the curve in her waist really makes this image come together.

Then a change of clothes and we get a completely different mood.  I thought this white outfit was dazzling and playful!

Because Aubrey has such great eyes, I wrapped her in a large piece of blue gauze and came in close for a few images.  This was one of my favorites!

We ended the shoot with a series of her sitting on one of my unique carpets.  The color accented her dress, and it also gave me a chance to really show off her pretty legs and shoes once again.

What a fun shoot!  If you need some new portraits for business or just want some fun fashion images, give me a call.  801-728-3317.  And in the meantime, check out my website for more great images.  BryCox.com.

Trip to Lake Powell

Usually my trips are all business, as are my blog posts.  I usually like to talk about some my favorite images and jobs of the week here on my blog, but this week some of my favorite images come from a fun trip that I took to Lake Powell.

The trip was with my ward and friends, and we had a blast.  A side note, all of these images are with my professional point and shoot camera too — a small and completely manual camera that is great for travel.

I took this first image on my drive down, looking out my window while driving.

Our friend Benton, who is an expert fly fisherman, took my cousin Tony and I on a fishing expedition up the Colorado River.  We started here, just below the dam.  I call this image, “The best dam image of me.” 🙂

Here’s Benton showing off one of Tony’s catches.  With his help, we caught a ton of fish — all however were too big to keep.  It’s a funny rule on this part of the river.

Here was one of my catches, one of the biggest of the day.  If I could have kept it, it would have made a great dinner!

Here is a pano looking out from our boat.

Because of my recent knee dislocation, I wasn’t able to wakeboard with everyone else.  I’ve been working hard on rehabilitation, because I like being active and don’t want to miss out on summer fun.  My knee was feeling pretty good so I tried some light surfing behind our friend Mark’s boat.  It was great to get in the water.

If you haven’t seen or heard of this, you start behind the boat with a rope in order to get started, and then throw the rope back to the boat once you get your balance.   A pro can surf on that wake indefinitely.

It not only was a great trip, but a reminder for me to photograph my casual moments in life, as well as the professional.  Photographs are a great way to preserve memories not only for us, but for future generations.

If you need any photographs of your family this summer, give me a call.  801-728-3317.  And in the meantime, check out more of my professional work on my website at BryCox.com.

70th Year Anniversary

This week I photographed Wilford and Elva Zaugg for their 70th Wedding Anniversary.  Their daughter called and set up the appointment, not knowing that the Zaugg’s were long-time friends of my parents since I was a child.

Wilford and Elva actually live around the corner from me and have since 1940 when they were first married.  They raised 11 children, and now have 58 grandchildren and 80 great-grandchildren!

It was very fun to see these guys again.  When I was young, Wilford owned a dairy and was the star in one of my mom’s church plays.  Later in life he donated much of his land for a school and church.

During the appointment, Wilford told me how he still works with his hands creating custom pens out of wood.  He even made many of the parts for his wood lathe that were needed for his fine custom work.  He even brought me a pen as a gift, so I took a portrait of him and his custom wood pens.

It was an honor to be apart of their anniversary portrait and reception, and I know that these images are much appreciated by his family.

If it’s time for a portrait in your family, give me a call.  And to see more of my work, check out my website at BryCox.com.

Baby Gavin

Here are the photographs I did of little baby Gavin, during his first week.  We started out the session with him crying and hollering.  I loved the tense look in the eyes and toes.

But we helped him settle down and got these great images of him.

Some perspective images showing how little his hand is.

A few close-ups of him sleeping.

And then I ended the session with a group portrait of baby Gavin with his older brother and sister.

What a fun shoot.  And I really  love photographing kids.  They are so cute and genuine.  And I know that when they are older, they will love looking back on their childhood with the help of these great portraits.

Keri’s New Portraits

Keri needed a business portrait so we did a fun shoot.  I started off with the business portrait that she could use for her website, business cards, etc.

And then we did some fun fashion portraits while she was here.  I thought it’d be fun to use some very specular light and over-expose the image for a very hip and fresh look.

I absolutely love all of these images!  Keri was so fun to work with and we had a great time creating these photographs.  At the end, we messed her hair up and did these images as a closing thought — which were some of my favorite images.

I loved how these images look!  Keri was a stunning model and was a joy to light and photograph.  We really had a great time during this shoot and I loved her eyes and expressions too.  I hope to do more photographs of her soon.

Laura, Flavia, AltaMODA, and Fashion Bridals!

I created some amazing photographs of a good friend of mine, Laura, as she modeled some gorgeous gowns from AltaMODA, my favorite and only couture bridal shop in Salt Lake.

Laura’s hair and make-up was expertly done by Flavia of VersaArtistry.com.  All of these images were created right here at my indoor studio, using some of my new sets that I’ve been building.

I’m finding that there is a huge and growing trend for indoor studio portraits lately, and I think that it has to do with the fact that there are so many new and well-meaning photographers (without studios, credentials, or business licenses) all doing exactly the same thing in exactly the same locations — and throwing the same kitschy computer effects on all of their images.

This phenomenon is causing clients to ask me for images that don’t look like they were created by just anyone with a camera and computer, but rather they are looking for images that are both funky and classy at the same time — images that are both stylized and flattering at the same time, without excuses.  People are asking not only for artistic, creative, and unique photographs, but they want to look great in every single image — that they always look amazing!

I’m finding a growing response to photographic credentials, as well as more requests for indoor studio work.  These new requests have led me to redo my indoor camera area with more options and to create some fantastic new sets which I’m very excited about.

So though people are still asking for appointments in my outdoor garden, they are also asking for indoor studio portraits.  Many are wanting a mix of both indoor and outdoor, especially during these past few weeks of uncertain Utah spring weather.  With all of the time and money to get their hair and makeup done and to get a fantastic dress, they want to know that an appointment will not be moved due to rain, wind, or anything else.  The indoor camera sets are solving that.

So as you look at these images, note the gorgeous dresses, the fantastic hair and makeup, the great model, and also the fact that these images are not retouched and have no computer effects applied.

These images are straight photography!  The fun colors, dramatic lighting, flattering and interesting poses — all in-camera!  When you have a great photograph, there isn’t the need to kitsch it up with computer effects.

So if you are getting married and would love fun, fashionable images where you look amazing in every image, then give me a call at 801-728-3317.  I’m happy to photograph your entire wedding or just some bridals, depending on your budget.

“Impressions of China” Art Book in Final Proofing Stage

My book, “Impressions of China,” is in its final proofing stage! I have received the artist proof from the printer and have been checking every detail before the final copies are printed and bound.

I am very excited by the look and quality of the images in this proof edition, love the presentation of one image per page. The entire book is 185 pages, and cost me a bit more to produce because it is printed in full color — all 185 pages! It contains images and street portraits that I created while traveling throughout China on two different speaking engagements last summer.

The book has been designed to match the look and layout of my earlier book, “Impressions of Italia” so that the two books can be a set, whether displayed on a coffee table or bookshelf.

If you’ve been following my blog, then you’ve seen some of the images that will be in the book already, like the two photographs below that I recently won some awards with, including Master Photographer of the Year!

I would love all of you to have an early copy of this book, and have decided to sell the first set of these for my material costs only, $75!

I will also include a gift certificate for the same amount that you can use on your next portrait session or order, so it’s like getting one or the other for free! If you’d like to be on the list and get one of the early copies for only my material printing costs, plus a gift certificate for $75, then let me know by sending me an email at web@brycox.com, or visit my website at www.brycox.com and click on CONTACT to get ahold of me. Make sure to put in your name and contact info in the email so that I can get a hold of you.

Ryan Shupe & the RubberBand, Live at Sandy Amphitheater (June 4, 2010)

Last night was the Ryan Shupe & the RubberBand show at the Sandy Amphitheater.  Here are some of the images I did that night.  I decided to try a completely different camera than I’d normally use at a concert, and had a great time creatively!  I always love to photograph concerts because of the motion, the energy, and the merging of artistic forms.

The image has to be caught right when it happens, because there’s no going back or setting up the shot.  Things need to be properly framed, composed, and exposed correctly — and quickly without mistake.  It’s always a fun challenge that makes me just excited thinking about it.

I’m proud to say that all of these images are straight out photographs — no cropping or retouching!  Check them out and let me know what you think.

These shows are always so full of energy!  The band members are all impeccable musicians and so fun to watch as they move on the stage.
I especially like these next few in motion, with all the colors of the stage lights.

What a great show!  It is always fun to see these guys live and I encourage everyone to catch them when they hit a town near you.
