Senior/Grads

Molly’s Outdoor Fashion Portraits

I love doing fashion work because I get to be more edgy in my creative approach, and I get to make women look great which is what portraits are all about.

For this shoot, I had a very fun and beautiful model named Molly with very pretty eyes. We set up multiple lights and other equipment to create some really unique looks quickly on our outdoor location. I especially love the balance of this first one, with her to the far right side, lit from a strong angle, thoughtful expression, and hair blowing back into the image.

Another one of her with hair blowing. I love her eyes in this image, and the toned b&w treatment.

I love this next one of her smiling. Though many of my favorites (as you can see here) were serious expressions, she really had an infectious and genuine smile, and this image shows that.

Here’s one of my favorite mid-lenths of her, a fantastic and sassy image with Molly framed by the trees.

And this close-up of her was in the same group of trees. I love the lighting on this, as it really accentuates her expression and her hair softly falling across one eye. All of these images also are finished with my new line of custom edges that I have created and sell to photographers all over the country giving images a unique finished look.

All around this was just a great shoot that produced some great images. If you’d like some great images of you or someone in your family, now is the time to book an appointment and come in. Give me a call at 801-728-3317 and let’s talk about your dream portrait.

Hayden’s Senior Portraits

High school seniors and grads are a joy to photograph because I get to create images that are more fun and edgy, plus the seniors love it. Here is a shoot I did of Hayden.

Instead of just taking pictures of someone, I photograph who they are and that includes what they enjoy doing. Here is an intricate collage design of Hayden in his team basketball jersey.

I love groupings of images, and here I did some fashion lighting and created a series of three, grouped into a trio to show different sides to his personality.

Most seniors will get one of my signature art pieces like this one, where everything, the background, edges, and entire look are created custom every time in post production for a really unique look.

Black and white can be timeless and edgy if done right, and I choose that medium to create this image of Hayden in his officer’s sweater so that the attention goes right to his eyes.

School is starting soon which means that right now is the best time for the class of 2003 to make their appointments. Right now you’ll have your summer tan, summer schedule, you can beat the rush and get the best pick of available times, and there is a special for seniors in August! Give me a call at 801-728-3317 to make an appointment.

Sammi’s Graduation Portraits

I love photographing high school graduates. The seniors are so much fun to work with, and they love my fashion work so I can really go crazy! Here’s what we created for Sammi. This first one is one of my favorites. It gave me the opportunity to show off her sparkle, while also using many of my overlays and edges for a really unique piece.

Sammi is a dancer, and that’s a big part of her life. It’s important to show that off in an artistic and unique way, and it gave me a chance to create something that’s difficult to do, but looks great – a collage of different dance poses. Here’s the end result.

And a square collage is always a favorite and a fun way to show different looks and personalities, smiling and serious, dressy and casual, inside and out.

Sammi was a student body officer, so we needed to get something unique of her in her sweater too.

And finally, one of her favorites that we used for her graduation announcement design.

If you’re an upcoming senior, summer is a great time to get your portraits done. Give me a call and let’s create something amazing for you! 801-728-3317.

Beautiful Rachel

I loved meeting and photographing Rachel.  She was a blast!

We may have had a short shoot, but the images were fun to create and she looked so great!  This first image utilizes my own custom made edges and overlays.  That is the only image with any enhancements, by the way.  The rest of these are still un-retouched, but I like them as straight images.  They have such a sense of reality to them without any retouching or effects.

I loved Rachel’s genuine smile, the gorgeous shape of her eyes, and her long dark hair.  She was such a great model!  I feel like you get a sense of who she is from these images.

I used this deep, rich brown background to set off her blue outfit and added just a touch of rim light on her hair for dimension.  I am so pleased with these photographs.  They have POP!

And for this final image I added some heavier edge lights to set off her hair and collarbones.  There is a lot of dimension in this and her smile and sparkle in her eyes is so genuine and real.  I really hope that she loves these images.  It was great getting to know her.

When it comes to portraits, everyone needs to be lit in a custom way for them.  I’m one of the only Master photographers in the state and I know just how to light YOU and make YOU look amazing!  So whether you’d like some images for your fashion or model portfolio or would love some kick-butt senior portraits, then give me a call.  I have some specials running during November that you will love! 801-728-3317.

My shoots are so much fun and I know just how to make you look great, beautiful, feminine, and sexy — without being risqué or cheesy.  And overall, you will LOVE your images!

Underwater Photography & Music Videos

I recently created a few short music videos with a new camera capable of going underwater.  I’ve had other underwater cameras in the past, but this one is my new favorite!  I can shoot in true and high-def HD and can shoot in true slow-motion too, giving a terrific and smooth slow motion, rather than a jittery slow-mo that is created from just slowing down clip shot at normal speed.

Check out this demo video I created while testing this camera last weekend on my friend’s boat.  I love the abstractness of the bubbles and water.  I shot for that quite a bit.

During this underwater shoot, I securely mounted the camera to my wrist, my chest, and even to a pole.  I tested it in sunlight, underwater, with movement, and everything else I could think of.  I’m excited because I didn’t have to edit any of the clips.  All of what you see is exactly what I created in camera — no adjustments.

About a week before I also tested it for time lapse ability and also wanted to test the mount I got for it to secure it to the outside of a vehicle.  I wanted to see how it would hold up to the wind at freeway speeds.  Here’s what I created while driving from my house to 7600 South in Salt Lake.

I am very impressed and have a bunch of new ideas for using this camera now.  I really hope to use it on high school seniors.  Years ago I created music videos from weddings and seniors, but the time involved to produce the pieces was so time consuming, that the packages became very expensive.  Now though, with this camera and with the newest editing software that I’ve also been testing, I hope to be able to create these kinds of things again for seniors and wedding couple, but in a more cost-effective way, and with even greater production value.

If you’re a high school senior and want a hip music video that you can post on your facebook page, then give me a call!  NO ONE creates images like me!  My shoots are super artistic, fun, and I know just how to make you look great!  You will LOVE your images!

Bethany, Night Portraits in Atlanta!

I had a blast photographing Bethany in the city of Atlanta at night.  She was a beautiful and fun model who even had a few call backs with the TV show, America’s Next Top Model.  But besides having a fun and beautiful model, creating high-caliber images in this type of environment is very difficult on many levels.

However, it’s that higher level of difficulty that makes the entire shoot extra fun for me because I feel a surge of creativity when things are technically difficult.  That’s because I value photographs even more when I know that other photographers wouldn’t be able to create them standing in the same setting.  Therefore creating superb images in difficult situations makes the images all the more valuable to me.

On this image above, I love the play of warm and cool tones (warm in the foreground and cool in the background), creating a lot of depth and impact!

Shooting in a city is fun at any time of day because I have to create backgrounds from the environment, and make them balance and play with the subject correctly.  Everything in an image has to work for the portrait or else it works against it.  Most photographers don’t take into account how lines, shapes, and colors in a background affect the foreground subject.  But I am a stickler about the details and won’t take a shot unless everything looks great — including how the background interacts with the foreground.  I will continue to change my setup until things work.

But then when you add night to the mix of shooting in a city, you add another layer of difficulty — LIGHTING!  Lighting isn’t used to create an exposure, but rather to specifically sculpt a subject.  Therefore it must be used specifically!  It must come from a very specific angle depending on the model, despite any surroundings.  And at the same time light has to balance with the background in both intensity as well as color temperature to avoid creating images that are too dark, flat, or dull looking.  An image, even when created at night, should instead seem 3-dimentional and have pop!

So with that in mind, Bethany and I had a great time just creating images on this city block.  Her style was cute and fun, and we got a lot of variety.

I love this smiling close-up above, and this serious expression in the image below.  Both created in the same spot.  The vertical lines in the background above play off her angle and her soft hair, while the curve of the sidewalk in the image below leads your eye back to her and adds balance to the left side.

I really like the shadow of a the figure off camera in this next image below.  It helps create a mysterious mood.  It was created by some stranger walking by, and I liked it and waited to take the shot once the shadow moved into the open space of the image where it wouldn’t visually touch and compete with the rail in the foreground.

I used the effect of light color temperature to create different moods and looks throughout the shoot.  I love the color, the angle, and her expression and stance on this image below.  The hair softly blowing at an angle really makes this image work!

I ended the shoot with a light up close, sharp, and at a hard angle to create deep shadows.  The mix of vertical and horizontal lines of the background, and light and dark areas are all broken up by her pose — making it all work together beautifully!

It was really fun meeting Bethany and creating these images.  We had a great time and I hope that she does well in her career.

Dallin’s High School Senior Portraits

Senior shoots are so fun.  I get to do all the fun fashion stuff that I love to do, and seniors love it!  Dallin came in for senior portraits and here’s some of my favorites from the shoot.  This first one is on my magazine background, and uses one of my custom pealed edges.  It has a cool retro feel.

Dallin did the Senior Mix Session, which includes both Color and B&W, both indoor and outdoor portraits using a number of sets, and multiple clothing changes.  We mixed looks and created images that show his interests and hobbies.

I love this one below of Dallin playing the guitar.  I toned it with as a multi-tone b&w, and then added some light-leaks on the corners.  Originally when I was shooting the image, I wanted it to look like a band poster.  Now I can totally imagine text on it, advertising his next show.

We also did some cool black and whites in the studio, using some high-contrast fashion style lighting.  This first in a casual shirt, and the second in his letterman’s jacket.

Then some dressy images in the studio and out.  One of my favorites was this outdoor image, taken in my studio gardens.

And then finishing up with some cool images that use his various school jackets.  This first was with his officer’s jacket and his guitar.  I used a set that consisted all of browns, to match his clothing.

And this second with his leather letterman’s jacket and riding a motorcycle.

If YOU are a high school senior and would like a Senior Mix Session like Dallin that shows off you and your personality, give me a call to schedule your appointment.  801-728-3317.

Fashion and Senior Portraits of Blue-Eyed Grace

I had the opportunity to photograph Grace, and do some fashion and senior portraits for her.  She was so fun and had a sparkling personality, that I loved photographing her.  I had a great time laughing with her and focusing on really capturing her personality.

There are a lot of photographers all over the country who follow my blog, and for those of you looking, you should know that these images are all un-retouched, and all were created using one light!  That’s a cool thing!

This is incredibly unique because the trend with most photographers lately is to not use any lights because they don’t know how to use them correctly, but then use tons of Photoshop effects and retouching to fix the images later.  The result is weird smooth-skinned people with glowing white eyes, or images that seem flat, gray, and dull and lack punch.

The other group of photographers, are pretty good at lighting, but need to use multiple lights.  It normally takes multiple lights to sculpt a person correctly, create dimension, and separate the subject from the background.  I teach these exact techniques all over the country. (Photographers: visit my workshop site BryCoxWORKSHOPS.com)

But I also think it’s fun to do the seemingly impossible, and that is to purposefully use one light, and still do everything that you need to do with multiple lights, and in the end create images that are unique, different, that have personality, depth, and that grab you emotionally.

I love this stunning four-up composite of Grace below.  It is so interesting how all the images can be so different and yet work together so well.

I also designed her up a trio composite using some of my custom fleurs in the corners.  There are great products that when framed, can hang anywhere in the home.

I then used a beautiful Tuscan set to create these images, and felt that some warm lighting would complete the mood.  This color is not a computer effect at all, but rather how I actually lit her on the set.  Again, these images are un-retouched and have no effects.  I did however on this image below, add one of my custom made photo edges to this, to complete the old world theme.

And here is another of her on this same set, but serious.  I love her expression in these.  She was so good at both serious and smiling images.  Both types of expressions really draw me in on these images.

Are you a high school senior right now?  Do you want something that is different, unique, and that can’t be copied by other photographers?  Do you want your photographs taken by the artist who is called to train photographers all over the country and who photographs for magazines and famous people?

If so, give me a call at 801-728-3317 and let’s talk.  I have basic packages starting at $199 (which includes the session fee, 1 outfit, 2-5x7s, 8-wallets of your favorite pose, and a digital copy for facebook and your iPhone) up to full Senior Mix Sessions that includes both Color and B&W, both indoor and outdoor portraits using a number of sets, and multiple clothing changes!

You are only a senior once, so don’t settle for new photographers with no credentials.  If you want real magazine-style images, remember that my images are used by Capitol Records, national and international magazines like Billboard Magazine and American Girl Magazine.  I have photographed a lot of famous people like Lee-Ann Rimes, Olivia Newton-John, Mitt Romney, and the last four Utah Governors (to name a few).

Miranda’s Senior Portraits

Miranda and I had such a ball during her senior portrait shoot.  She is fun, stunning, and an amazingly talented dancer.  I love to incorporate people’s personality into the images, and with Miranda being a dancer, we created a series of wonderful images that showcase this talent of hers.

Because she enjoyed my edgy photographic style, I was able to create some amazing images.  This first one is part of of my signature art piece line, and is created from scratch using my custom edges and overlays.  It really makes a one-of-a-king piece!  It works so well with this particular image because of her serious expression along with my edgy lighting style.  This image really pops!

And here is one of my other favorites from the shoot, her dancing collage which will look fantastic finished on canvas.  This type of collage is so satisfying as an artist, but it is incredibly time-consuming too as every part of this image requires digital manipulation.  Everything not only has to work together in a piece like this, but everything also needs to show proper perspective, dimension, and at the same time have color harmony.  In case you didn’t notice, I added her name to the background too!

I took some personality images in high-contrast black and white using a fashion style lighting that I use a lot for magazine work.  The result is this fun trio that comes framed and ready to hang on the wall.  Notice how all the images are completely different, but similar enough to create interest and tell a mini story.

Miranda got a Senior Mix Session, which includes both Color and B&W, both indoor and outdoor portraits using a number of sets, and multiple clothing changes.  This image on our rock path was one of my favorites from the outdoor shoot.

And of course being an officer, we needed some fun images of her in her Officer’s Sweater.  I took my favorite three that I felt had the most personality and created another fun trio.

Thank you again, Miranda for such a wonderful shoot!

Dallin’s Senior Portraits

Dallin just came in for his high school senior portraits, and being a football player, we incorporated that into his shoot.

I love photographing seniors because they are so much fun.  They really love and appreciate my crazy, edgy, and artistic side and I have a ball photographing them and creating the best images possible.

This first image is one of my signature art pieces that utilizes my custom edges and art overlays.  These signature pieces are finished with a heavy, textured glaze that really makes the image glow!  It is finished without glass and looks amazing!

We did the big shoot for Dallin, what I call a Senior Mix Session which includes both Color and B&W, both indoor and outdoor portraits using a number of sets, and multiple clothing changes.  This image above was taken inside on the fashion gray set which is a very specific shade of gray that you’ll see used all the time in magazines like GQ.

I love the expression on Dallin on these two images, the tilt of his shoulders in both, and how well the colors work so well above and the b&w works below.

I especially like black and white when done correctly, especially with moody lighting.  A Senior Mix Session is a great way to get a mix of outfits, both dressy, and casual, and get various backgrounds and sets.

I have a number of very cool sets at the studio, while also having a half-acre of English style gardens.  In one place you can get a huge variety of images quickly.

Dallin plays both football for Weber High School as well as golf.  We had a good time creating some very cool sports images for him.  I especially like this image below.

And finally, a fun image in casual clothes that is both fun while having classic appeal.  This is an image that is perfect for parents.  At Bry Cox Studio, I’ll create images that both you and your parents will be happy with.

And finally, here’s the wall composite, utilizing a few of the best images from the shoot.  The idea of a composite is to show different sides to someone’s personality while at the same time creating a design that is interesting to the eye and has a good balance to it.  These composites fit almost anywhere in the house and have been very popular!

Thank you Dallin for coming in!  It was a great shoot!

Teaching Fashion Lighting/Posing in Illinois

I just got back from teaching a workshop on creativity and fashion in Illinois.  I’m so excited about the images I created there!  They are awesome!  I had fantastic models and a great location to shoot in too.

I created this short video for YouTube of the highlights.  Check it out!

And here’s a separate link in case the video above doesn’t show up in your blog reader.  Just click on this photo here.

I created images both outdoor on location in the city, as well as indoor in a studio.  This is one of my favorite images from the shoot.  I walked the model Kim in her high heels, out to the shore of the Mississippi River, where I could see a lighthouse in the distance.

I only knew that I wanted the lighthouse, but when I got out there, I found this big rope, and suddenly the image came to me.  Fashion is about mixing opposites, suddenly I had the image in my head.  This pretty girl all dressed up in cute clothes doing manual labor on the shore, pulling on this enormous rope.

I lit this and all of these outdoor images with one light, set manually — me personally holding the light in one hand, with my camera in the other.  That’s the way I can control exactly where the light is going to hit her face as she moves and bends.  Also, none of these images have been retouched or enhanced.  The colors, contrast, cropping, smoothness of the skin, whiteness of the eyes, and even the color “effects” or anything else you notice, are all done in camera.  This was part of the class, to learn how to create awesome images in camera, without having to “fix” them with Photoshop or other software.

I have a saying: “The trick to Photoshop is Photography.”

I was lucky that one photographer got some images of me working.  Here you can see me working my own light with my free hand, adjusting as the model adjusts.

These next images I created in a studio that we set up in the hotel.  The softness is not a computer effect, but done optically with a lens.  The warm colors were created specifically from the custom white balance that I set while shooting.  Again, no retouching or effects applied — just great photography.

Contrast the feel and look of these images above with this next image below, created in the same spot, but different lenses, different lighting.

I took this model also down to the docks and created these in a huge boathouse/warehouse.  These first couple are shot using the setting sun coming through a window.  One of my favorite things about this is shadow from the window panels on her.  Again, no color or other adjustments.  The idea of this workshop was to be completely creative while being completely technical — balancing the two halves of the brain in harmony.

I absolutely love these images using the window light, especially this portrait of the two of these girls together.  It’s so mesmerizing to me!

Then switching up the lighting and lenses, I used the same room to create some completely different looks.  Many photographers have or know only one style of lighting — all their images look the same.  I believe that an artist should be versatile, being able to do anything they can imagine.  Photographers need to be able to masterfully create images in all sorts of styles, using all sorts of lighting patterns and light sources — and the images should still be awesome!

I also created some awesome twilight images of this model using specular flash outdoors, using the docs, railings, and lights as leading lines.

And here’s one of my favorites of her friend, using the light from outside to wrap around and light her.

The idea of my workshops is to help photographers create great images on purpose, and not by accident.  Many times photographers have the mind-set that if they just shoot a lot, that by the law of averages, some images will work out.  I believe in creating the opposite way.  I believe that if someone is hiring you to create amazing photographs, that your images should not be haphazard, but rather deliberate.  They should be done right, and done on purpose, with intent, and with care taken on both the creative and technical aspects so that every image is good, and not just the lucky ones.

If you’re a photographer and would like to attend one of my events, please check out my speaking website for an updated schedule, BryCoxWORKSHOPS.com.  Also, if a big event isn’t your style or if there aren’t any events in your area, you can host a small and intimate event at your place as long as at least 8 photographers attend.  If you can get 8 or more there, you can attend for free!  Call me for more details.

And if you’re a high school senior, model, or for whatever reason you need some dang awesome photography, give me a call 801-728-3317.  Thanks for looking and please browse my main website at BryCox.com (or my entire blog if you’re reading this in a separate feed reader like facebook BryCox.com/blog).
