Business Portraits for KUTV 2 News, Salt Lake City

Because great lighting and making people look good is my specialty, I shoot a lot of business portraits for people who need to look their best. One of my continuing favorite shoots is with KUTV 2 News, who’s ranked number one in Utah. They’re a very fun group to see each time and catch up with, and they’re all very good at what they do.

And with TV being a visual medium, it’s important especially for these professionals to look their best on billboards, signs, and online. So I’m always grateful when they call and have me come in and update their images.

During the day of the shoot, everyone is busy working on the breaking news and their own hectic schedules and responsibilities. It makes lighting extra difficult because we’re constantly moving from spot to spot re-lighting and setting up as various people become available. It means a jam-packed day full of multiple mini shoots in lots of locations.

And after a very long day, we end up with a vast array of options for each anchor and reporter, including studio white, news room, on location, and all sorts of various group shots – ready to go. I’m really happy with how everyone looks, and wanted to share some favorites with you. First, here are some headshots on studio white.

And here are some favorite individual headshots on location.

And each team gets a variety of groupings in various locations too. Here are some of the evening news team group portraits.

A studio white background is useful when adding graphics behind. These are the ones you’ll see on billboards quite often. But I really enjoy creating these group shots below in the news room studio too. The set, cameras, and lights in the background make for some wonderful abstract shapes which tells the story of who these reporters and anchors are and what they do. It’s nice having all options after a shoot.

Here’s the Talkin’ Sports team.

And of course the morning team that is great to wake up to.

If you or your business needs to look great, give me a call. I’d love to create something wonderful for you, so that you and your business look like a million bucks. Depending on the size and scope, we can shoot here in my studio, or come on location and shoot right there at your business. Give me a call at 801-728-3317.

And until next time, America.

Early Favs of KUTV News Teams

I spent a jam packed last two days at KUTV 2 News photographing all of their news teams and staff. They’ve all become friends from not only the years of doing their professional photographs, but also from shooting many of their individual personal events like family, children and weddings. So this commercial shoot becomes a great time so see everyone.

As you’d guess, they are a great group to work with. And when I’m there we photograph everything we can: various combinations of groups, individuals, and in multiple locations. I bring in a couple loads full of lighting equipment, and we shoot away. This way they’re set for all their photographic needs for billboards, promos, and prints. Next time you’re driving through Salt Lake City, keep your eyes out for their beautiful billboards.

We needed two images turned around quickly, so I thought I’d share these early favorites of the morning and evening news teams. I love the clean, beautiful lighting, the great smiles, and the overall impact of these images.

As I was finishing up yesterday, I was looking through their Instagram feed and saw these fun behind the scenes photos. This collage below is linked directly to their Instagram so you can click it and go through their slideshow from our shoot. Click their group photo and then swipe left and right to see all the others. There’s even some fun boomerang videos in there too.

Once the project is all finished, I might share a few more favorites. But I thought it’d be neat for everyone to see these today.

If you’re a business and need some photographic work like headshots, product images, or even commercial architecture photos of your building or entryway, give me a call. 801-728-3317. I’d love to create something amazing for you.

And until next time, America.

New Commercial Portraits for KUTV News Anchors

I always love photographing the KUTV news team. Time really flies between our shoots and it feels like almost no time has passed as we all laugh and have a great time shooting images. The entire team is great to work with and always fun and extra grateful to have me there working. I’ve been doing their official portraits for many years now, and these images get used on billboards, in brochures, on websites, and really anything where they need an official portrait.

We shoot a variety of images of every team in a variety of locations, all with custom lighting. It has has to be done quickly because we are shooting these images as they are working, plus it’s all done in and around the hustle and bustle of a busy newsroom. To add complexity, we need to create images really quickly in a variety of locations all in a few minutes while we can get certain people together. That means constant new lighting setups all over, and shooting so that images look perfect in-camera. We move around from their news studio, to a white studio, to all green, as well as setting up outside. And the chef of course is photographed in their kitchen too. We’re never in the same spot for more than a few minutes.Cox_KUTV2014-1999

Shauna Lake and Mark Koelbel have been great clients of mine for many years, and it is always good to see them. They make a great team too and it’s fun seeing how talented and polished they are as they work live.

And below is the entire nightly news team, as well as a number of other favorite images from the shoot.

And here is the morning team, which is as funny in person as they are on TV. I’m always amazed at their energy level so early in the morning. I really like how everyone looks in these images.Cox_KUTV2014-3321Cox_KUTV2014-3309

KUTV produces news almost all day long. They have a constant line up of shows and so they have a lot of talent. We photograph everyone and all the groups, and I won’t post them all here, but here is a screenshot some of their favorite head-shots and how they’re used on their website’s contact page.

Shauna’s Family Portrait Downtown

I’ve had so many great family portraits to create and deliver for Christmas, but here is one of my favorites. I’ll post more shoots after Christmas.

I’ve photographed Shauna and her family many times over the years, and they are all so fun and great to work with. For this shoot we decided to do a different location because she works downtown for KUTV, we thought it would make a great location for her updated family portrait.

I really love this grouping, with everyone leaning in, relaxed and smiling. The framing with the gold door gives the image even more warmth and interest.

Though you can’t tell in the photo, it was actually a very cold, winter night when we created these. Everyone’s jackets are just out of the frame for easy reach between setups. But with the beautiful and warm lighting, relaxed groupings, and happy faces, you’d never know it was that cold. It looks like a nice warm day.

We also did some individuals to create this nice trio for the wall.

I love creating family portraits for people. It’s very fulfilling to create something that has emotional value and that is going to be a cherished art piece on the wall. It’s also fun to photograph the same families over the years and see kids grow and change, and Shauna’s family is extra special.

If it’s time for some updated Christmas portraits for your family, the holiday break is a great time to get in. Families are in town, people are together, and the big rush at the studio is past. Give me a call and let’s get your family together and create for something great for your walls. 801-728-3317

And until next time, America.

New Portraits of KUTV News Anchors

Last night, KUTV started posting on Facebook some of the recent images I created for them of their news anchors, like this image of the morning team, Mary Nickles and Ron Bird. I thought this shoot would make a nice blog post today because I love creating great portraits and making people look great. Every shoot is different, but sometimes I create images that people can use for their business.

A shoot like this adds extra levels of difficulty, both technically (moving, setting up, and shooting in multiple locations quickly, while nailing color and lighting), as well as creatively (quickly getting strong yet believable poses that flatter, along with great expressions that draw you in).

A newsroom is a face-paced place to be with people coming and going, having only a short time for a portrait, and individual portraits are shot at different times of day and in different locations, as people can come. I have to be quick, mobile and adaptable, and fast with my setups.

So with these extra layers of difficulty, I am extra pleased with the results of this shoot.

There were a lot more images, but here are just a few of the highlights from KUTV’s favorite images. See what you think and see how many people you recognize from the news, morning, afternoon and evening.

BryCox_KUTV-Nov'12-1019 BryCox_KUTV-Nov'12-1088Every team had group and individual images created in four different locations, some being in the studio and some being outside. This gives them a great mix of images to use for different purposes.

Bry Cox Image of KUTV Anchors Used in Salt Lake Tribune

One of the images I just shot for KUTV a few days ago was just used in the Salt Lake Tribune for a story about KUTV winning the November 2012 sweeps.

It’s always fun to see these guys and work with them. I’ve photographed them a number of times both for the station as well as doing personal shoots for them over the years. Some of my favorite shoots have been Shauna Lake’s family and her cute boys as well as Matt Gephardt’s incredible wedding in Cabo San Lucas.

For this recent gig, I shot their entire staff of anchors, reporters, and weather teams, and all the various combinations of individuals and groups for their morning, afternoon and evening teams, both inside and outside. The images I created will be used for all their signs, printing, and web use, as well as various TV promos for the next year or so.

I’ll post more from the shoot later, but for now I wanted to wish everyone at KUTV 2 a big congratulations on winning the November sweeps.

If you’d like to read the Salt Lake Tribune article on their big win, I’ve linked it here:
