Commercial & Headshots

Business Portraits for KUTV 2 News, Salt Lake City

Because great lighting and making people look good is my specialty, I shoot a lot of business portraits for people who need to look their best. One of my continuing favorite shoots is with KUTV 2 News, who’s ranked number one in Utah. They’re a very fun group to see each time and catch up with, and they’re all very good at what they do.

And with TV being a visual medium, it’s important especially for these professionals to look their best on billboards, signs, and online. So I’m always grateful when they call and have me come in and update their images.

During the day of the shoot, everyone is busy working on the breaking news and their own hectic schedules and responsibilities. It makes lighting extra difficult because we’re constantly moving from spot to spot re-lighting and setting up as various people become available. It means a jam-packed day full of multiple mini shoots in lots of locations.

And after a very long day, we end up with a vast array of options for each anchor and reporter, including studio white, news room, on location, and all sorts of various group shots – ready to go. I’m really happy with how everyone looks, and wanted to share some favorites with you. First, here are some headshots on studio white.

And here are some favorite individual headshots on location.

And each team gets a variety of groupings in various locations too. Here are some of the evening news team group portraits.

A studio white background is useful when adding graphics behind. These are the ones you’ll see on billboards quite often. But I really enjoy creating these group shots below in the news room studio too. The set, cameras, and lights in the background make for some wonderful abstract shapes which tells the story of who these reporters and anchors are and what they do. It’s nice having all options after a shoot.

Here’s the Talkin’ Sports team.

And of course the morning team that is great to wake up to.

If you or your business needs to look great, give me a call. I’d love to create something wonderful for you, so that you and your business look like a million bucks. Depending on the size and scope, we can shoot here in my studio, or come on location and shoot right there at your business. Give me a call at 801-728-3317.

And until next time, America.

Concert Video and Photos for Ryan Shupe & the RubberBand Concert, Sandy Amphitheater June 2017

For more years than I can remember, warm weather here in Utah is marked by photographing outdoor concerts for Ryan Shupe and the RubberBand. They are always beautiful summer nights under the stars, soaking in great music. Just recently I shot Ryan’s big Utah show at the Sandy Amphitheater doing both video production and shooting photographs for the band’s promotional needs.

First, the promo video of Ryan just solo playing fiddle, mandolin, and singing along with a looper pedal. This was a huge project, shot with about 6 cameras, and included a ton of grading and editing to cut it all together with the right feel and storytelling. If you look closely, you can see me because one of my cameras catches me on stage at the very beginning and end of the video. Here’s the video. See what you think.

Bands are like any other business, they need great photos for advertising and promotion. Photographs are your storefront. People often say that a website is your storefront, because clients see that first and make buying decisions based on your site. But the truth is that your website is only as good as the photographs on it. Poor photographs – poor website. Great photographs – great website. Photos tell the story of your business, who you are, the show quality of what you’re offering.

Lighting is everything in a photo, and concerts are especially difficult with the constantly changing stage lighting. The values, intensity, and colors are constantly changing and the musicians are always on the move. There’s no redos. And that’s exactly why I love photographing concerts They’re an exhilarating creative challenge and I know that no one else can capture or get what I get. Hopefully when you see these images, it feels like you’re right there.

If your band or business needs some great photography to better showcase your brand, give me a call at 801-728-3317. I’d love to create something amazing for you.

And until next time, America.

Early Favs of KUTV News Teams

I spent a jam packed last two days at KUTV 2 News photographing all of their news teams and staff. They’ve all become friends from not only the years of doing their professional photographs, but also from shooting many of their individual personal events like family, children and weddings. So this commercial shoot becomes a great time so see everyone.

As you’d guess, they are a great group to work with. And when I’m there we photograph everything we can: various combinations of groups, individuals, and in multiple locations. I bring in a couple loads full of lighting equipment, and we shoot away. This way they’re set for all their photographic needs for billboards, promos, and prints. Next time you’re driving through Salt Lake City, keep your eyes out for their beautiful billboards.

We needed two images turned around quickly, so I thought I’d share these early favorites of the morning and evening news teams. I love the clean, beautiful lighting, the great smiles, and the overall impact of these images.

As I was finishing up yesterday, I was looking through their Instagram feed and saw these fun behind the scenes photos. This collage below is linked directly to their Instagram so you can click it and go through their slideshow from our shoot. Click their group photo and then swipe left and right to see all the others. There’s even some fun boomerang videos in there too.

Once the project is all finished, I might share a few more favorites. But I thought it’d be neat for everyone to see these today.

If you’re a business and need some photographic work like headshots, product images, or even commercial architecture photos of your building or entryway, give me a call. 801-728-3317. I’d love to create something amazing for you.

And until next time, America.

Dr. Collin Ito & the Sonoran Hills Dental Staff Near Phoenix Arizona

When I was recently working in Phoenix, I got my teeth checked out by my dentist and good friend, Dr. Collin Ito of Sonoran Hills Dental, located in the Ahwatukee area. And still no cavities! It was also time to update his commercial and staff photos for his office and website. I’ve photographed him, his family, and his staff for many years, and it was good to see everyone again.

brycox_cito_sonoranhillsdental_2016_02

Here’s his office staff (above) for his website, and individual head shots of everyone (below) for the office wall. brycox_cito_sonoranhillsdental_2016_01 His entry and office areas had changed quite a bit since I’d been there last. And my skills in photographing people and interiors have improved too over the years, so it was nice to shoot some new, updated photographs to showcase his place.
brycox_cito_sonoranhillsdental_2016_06

Even if you don’t know him, I think you can see in these photos how genuine he is, and how great he is to work with. And he’s very skilled at what he does.
brycox_cito_sonoranhillsdental_2016_03
brycox_cito_sonoranhillsdental_2016_04A nice touch is that he’s got video monitors and headphones rigged up so you can watch a movie while you’re getting your teeth worked on
brycox_cito_sonoranhillsdental_2016_08

And he has relaxing areas for waiting and for consultations.
brycox_cito_sonoranhillsdental_2016_09brycox_cito_sonoranhillsdental_2016_05

If you’re in the Phoenix area and need a great dentist (or if you want to go to the dentist when you happen to be in Phoenix, which is how I do it), Collin is a great guy and a great dentist.

Wildhorn Outfitters Video Shoot for Beach Tent

On a recent cold day here in Utah before the snow hit, we needed to shoot an outdoor video commercial for a new beach tent for Wildhorn Outfitters. It’s a very cool tent with built-in poles that pops up in seconds. It’s great for car-camping or a as a cabana for a day at the beach.

I scouted locations near me and found a great beach with the right look, and talked my good friend Tara into being our model and spokesperson for the video. We really needed someone great to carry the video and she killed it as I knew she would. Her personality shines through and it makes the commercial very entertaining. She’s always been easy and beautiful to photograph, plus she’s a die-hard outdoor enthusiast with instant cred – exactly what we needed for this commercial.

So with some custom lighting, sound, and color work, plus a great location, spokesperson, and a very cool tent to showcase, we have a very sharp and professional video that’s fun to watch. See what you think.

And for social media, here’s a quick cut as a 37 sec overview.

You may not know this, but I do quite a bit of commercial work. My lighting skills set me a part in my portrait work, but perfect lighting is also key to creating great product photographs. Here’s some of the work I did for this tent both in studio and on location.

First, the carry bag and all the pieces that come with the tent.

And here are some angles showing the tent set up with the screen and canopy up. One of the things that makes this tent unique is the canopy and shade options. If you’re a customer shopping for a tent online, you really need to see his visually.

As you saw from the video, this top mechanism pops the pole tension into place. You just stand the tent up and pop this.

Here’s the tent at the beach, again all custom lighting to make everything pop. Even the sky has a great deep blue to it.

They also make a number of products like this really cool camp chairs. I got me one because they’ve very comfortable and pack a lot smaller than any other chair I’ve seen.

And Wildhorn has these cool fat feet that don’t sink into the sand or dirt when you sit in the chair.

And here is one more example from the beach shoot, a shot of their beach blankets all packed up, and in various colors.

If you’re looking for a cool Christmas gift, check out the gear that Wildhorn Outfitters has available (also on Amazon).

And if you’re needing some great video or commercial photography for your business, give me a call. There’s a lot I can do right here in the studio while it’s cold outside, plus I can make a lot of locations work beautifully right now too. Give me a call at 801-728-3317.

And until next time, America.

Bry Cox Christmas Portrait & Christmas Cards

Now that my new Christmas cards are printed and ready to go in people’s orders, I can share the new photo and design. It was all created digitally starting first with a self portrait shot here in my studio (fired by remote using my hidden hand). The original background I created was all shades of white snowflakes, but I decided I needed a bit more color and punch, and changed it to this current blue background.

And because the background was made from scratch and took some time to make, I also used it for a recent commercial shoot for Ryan Shupe and the RubberBand shown in the previous post. Anyway, here is the final portrait and design.

brycox_christmascard_001

For the printed cards, the text, ‘Merry Christmas’ is stamped into the card in reflective gold foil. I really love how they turned out, and they’re on a very nice watercolor paper too so they have a great feel. I’m excited for clients and friends to start getting these cards.

brycox_christmascard_002

And you’ll notice too if you go to my main website front page, that the opening image is also this new portrait wishing visitors a Merry Christmas.

brycox_christmascard_003

And here is how I adapted the image and design for my various Facebook page banners showing that with one commercial photo, there are many uses.

brycox_christmascard_004

If you need a great commercial image or portrait for your company, give me a call at 801-728-3317. Being winter in Utah, it’s a great time for studio work which is perfect for high-end commercial shoots.

And of course I hope everyone has a wonderful and Merry Christmas.

Until next time, America.

Christmas Commercial Photos for Ryan Shupe and the RubberBand

It’s the Christmas season, and I wanted to share some commercial images that I’ve created for the band, Ryan Shupe and the RubberBand. These images were created completely from scratch here at my studio. We only had 20 minutes because the band stopped at my studio on their way to a gig. I had the lights set up for a particular look and I photographed each person separately. That gave me the ability to create a version of this of just Ryan alone for when he needs a different version.

I’ve learned to be very quick in the studio and during shoots. It’s easier on clients and it makes for better and more believable expressions on people. But being a commercial shoot, there was far more digital work to be done. So I created the composite of everyone together and built from scratch this cool blue background. I love how these turned out. They have a gritty band energy while also having a very appealing Christmas look to them. I hope these images work well for the band and their concert promotions.

Ryan Shupe and the RubberBand

Warm weather and summer in Utah has been marked for many years for me by outdoor concerts by my friend, Ryan Shupe and the RubberBand. Last week he performed at the Sandy Amphitheater and I was there to capture some new and energetic concert pictures.

I know that tomorrow he’ll also be performing in Layton Utah and the amphitheater there, and his full schedule for Utah and out-of-state gigs are all on his website at Shupe.net. Whether you’ve been to one of his shows before or have never been, they are always great. The concerts have energy, are full of heart, and attract all ages.

Bry Cox’s Commercial Shoot of Death Valley

I feel honored to have been asked by a large corporation to create some artistic views of Death Valley. I shot for an entire day, starting early before sunrise and going until past dark shooting a variety of locations and places. I was accompanied by the company’s rep who took me to places I never would have been able to go without his unrestricted access to various areas off limits to everyone else.

I created more images than I expected during this full day of commercial landscape shooting, and even shot a number of bonus images – color infrared – which looked amazing and refreshingly interesting, especially in the middle of the day.

We started the morning around 5:30 am creating panoramas before sunrise.

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_001

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_002

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_003

I found out that this was the spot where U2 shot their famous “Joshua Tree” album cover. After getting a number of images, the sun began to rise quite quickly behind us. I really like this image with the tops of the mountains in the distance being lit by the rising sun, and the various layers of color it created.

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_004

And here is that area in full morning sun.

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_005

In some areas there are some beautiful stretches of cracked earth. I liked these as abstract closeups.

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_006

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_007

A lot of the areas required some vigorous hiking. At the end of the day I had logged a number of miles plus some big elevation changes on my watch – much more than expected. And these scenes we passed even as we hiked, were breathtakingly beautiful.

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_008

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_009

Here, from one of my favorite lookouts, you could see a number of various rock formations which created bands of color and variety.

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_010

This was also during the “super bloom” due to an earlier flood which caused a number of flowers to bloom, something very unusual for this area of the country.

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_013

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_014

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_015

And in the more “civilized” areas of Death Valley, there’s some cool structures like this “Twenty-mule team” train, all part of the history of the Twenty-Mule Team Borax cleaner. I learned quite a bit about the history of the area as we drove around and hiked through the desert. It is all so much more interesting to me now, knowing some of the history of the place.

This particular train is surrounded by a fence to keep people from climbing on it, so some creative angles were necessary.

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_016

And shooting it in color infrared also gave me some very unique ways of showcasing this local feature.

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_033

Before shooting the Furnace Creek Resort up close, I wanted to get a long, distance shot of it to show how secluded it is, how tucked away in the middle of the desert it really is.

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_017

Here it is up close. It was built on the site of a natural hot spring, and was famous for being the Hollywood hotspot getaway for celebrities. It’s an oasis in the middle of the hot desert.

BryCox_DeathValley_2016_044

It was a very long day of shooting, but I like to make sure that people get more for their money than they expect. And I was surprised how many locations we were able to shoot and how many images I shot during this full day. It was far more than I expected which was a big bonus to the company. With so many beautiful images, I’m only sharing a small percentage here, and it was hard picking images to showcase. But I am grateful for the experience to shoot this job because I love the outdoors and I love creative photographic challenges, and making beautiful landscapes and images that people will appreciate for many years to come.

If your company needs some great photographs, give me a call. 801-728-3317. I’d love to chat with you about your photographic needs to see how I can help you out.

Kendra Lowe’s Commercial Portraits & Website

Kendra Lowe has been busy, and we’ve been creating new photos to keep up with all of her projects. She released a song and music video to raise money to fight sex trafficking, she just returned home from a tour of performances in France, Jordan, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia (in just the first part of 2016), and she’s been busy recording and arranging pieces for herself and other prominent musicians.

All of this means that she needs great photographs to send to various groups for printing and promo use as well as updating her website. So we’ve spent some time shooting images images of her performing and on stage plus commercial portraits in the studio.

Here are some of the images I’ve created of her recently. These first images are of her as music director of and while performing with David Archuleta.

BryCox_KendraLowe_01

BryCox_KendraLowe_02

And between shows we created this series of images of her playing keyboards and piano. Stage lighting is always difficult. The lights are never aiming where they should for a great portrait. So I adapted the stage lighting with reflectors and other various means to create the right atmosphere while giving me some great portrait lighting. I really like how these look.

I was happy to be able to use my piano in part of the shoot too. 🙂BryCox_KendraLowe_17

Not too long ago I created her a brand new website because she was being featured all over. She had just finished in one month doing Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, a European Christmas Tour, and events with Mitt Romney, David Archuleta, Lexi Walker, and Lindsey Stirling. All of her free time was gobbled up creating arrangements and orchestrations for a number of groups like the LDS Church. Some of these gigs came as her role as the musical director, arranger, and pianist for Lexi Walker, a 12 year old singing prodigy who I photographed and posted about earlier.

That website is KendraLowe.com and we are in the process of adding even more to it now.

Some people are surprised to hear that I create websites, but I’ve been doing my own websites as well as sites for specific clients since the 1990’s. There are a lot of things I do as a photographer and designer to help my clients with their photographic needs. Most people need photographs for a specific commercial need, and many times I can keep the look and vision of the images throughout the entire entire process, which helps them save time and money. It looks extra professional when original design concepts are followed through from initial photography to final output.

If you are unfamiliar with Kendra, she plays the piano, violin, banjo, she sings, she orchestrates, she really does it all. You have to read her bio on her website. And here are a few more images we created before.

I like websites that are engaging and are photographically and visually impactful. For her opening page, we did a full bleed page that’s responsive and adjusts to the device and computer screen you’re viewing on. I wanted a variety of images, so I pulled photographs from past events too, like this recent event where she played for David Archuleta and Lexi Walker.

Early Photos I did of Jenn Blosil, Lindsey Stirling, and Imagine Dragons

A few years ago, before a lot of Utah names were bigger stars, I photographed them as part of a talent contest for Utah’s Stadium of Fire. Jenn Blosil, Imagine Dragons, and Lindsey Stirling all stood out back in this 2011 contest as extra talented and as crowd favorites. Well to commemorate Jenn Blosil’s recent win as one of the top 10 on American Idol, I thought I’d pull up some of these past images to share. Congrats to her on her great win.

So here is Jenn in 2011, and she really rocked the stage that night.

BryCox_SOF2011-174-Jen-BlosilBryCox_SOF2011-185-Jen-Blosil

And her sister, Chelsea sang with her. A few years later, Chelsea and I and a few other musicians played at a soi·rée party together. She sang and played the guitar that night and was quite good.BryCox_SOF2011-175-Blosil

Here is Lindsey Stirling performing. This was the first time I’d seen any of these musicians perform, but they’ve all continued to rise and do great work.

I donated some big photographic prizes as part of the whole event, and had a blast hearing everyone play and photographing all these musicians. Here’s an outtake of some of the contestants waiting to hear the winning results back stage. You can see Jenn and Chelsea Blosil and Lindsey Stirling in this shot.

David Archuleta, Kendra Lowe, & Lexi Walker for the American Diabetes Gala at the Grand America

I had the pleasure of photographing the American Diabetes Gala at the Grand America in Salt Lake City, Utah for my friend Kendra Lowe. She was the director of the event and lined up musical performances with her friends, David Archuleta, Lexi Walker, some of her Lowe sisters, and other local favorites like Nate Keller.

Here are some of my images from the event, both behind the scenes as well as during the musical numbers. I love shooting concerts and live events. It’s always a creative challenge to get great images because I need to move stealthy to avoid drawing attention from the audience, and I also have to make the most of stage lighting and the movement of the subjects. Everything is constantly changing, and I have to think fast.
